  1. Blackfish's post in ID please (Serpent/Sand Eel) was marked as the answer
Maybe a Serpent Eel, hard to positively ID because of it decomposition.
  2. Blackfish's post in Can anyone identify this fish (Crimson Banded Wrasse) Male was marked as the answer
It’s a Male Crimson Banded Wrasse.
  3. Blackfish's post in Identify this fish (Eastern Striped Grunter) was marked as the answer
Eastern Striped Grunter @Gyimmy you have there. They also go by a few common names as well.
  4. Blackfish's post in What type of flathead is this? (Northern Sand Flathead) was marked as the answer
I recon “Northern Sand Flathead” Platycephalus endrachtensis but as @noelm says, if you can get a photo of its tail that would have been great.
With what I can see it’s got the distinctive stripes.
  5. Blackfish's post in What kind of flathead is this? (Marbled Flathead) was marked as the answer
That’s a Marbled Flathead Whiskey. Platycephalus marmoratus
    Good size too. 👍

Just heard from someone far more knowledgeable than me.
    Australian Red Cod Pseudophycis palmate

  7. Blackfish's post in I.D. on this creature please (Slate Pencil Sea Urchin) was marked as the answer
It could be a Slate Pencil Sea Urchin, but that’s a guess as I missed the day at school when we doing Sea Urchin’s…. 😄
  8. Blackfish's post in ID - Snook, Pike, both?(Striped Barracuda. Also called Pike and Snook) was marked as the answer
Common names are always confusing for these fish.
Snook- “Sphyraena novaehollandiae” Have been recorded in NSW but are not common and have quite a few common names including a variety with Pike in it.
Striped Barracuda- “Sphyraenidae obtustra” Also goes under another common name Yellowtail Barracuda ( Australian Museum and Fish of Australia) differ???
Plus other common names which have Pike it.
    Sigh … 🤔
My guess would be “Obustra” as they are quite common in Sydney but happy to be corrected.

At the end of the day it’s always good to get a new species that you hadn’t caught before.

  9. Blackfish's post in I dont want these in MY aquarium.... (Great White) was marked as the answer
    Great White Shark.
  10. Blackfish's post in What fish is this?(Paradise Threadfin Bream) was marked as the answer
I recon that’s a Paradise Threadfin Bream  (Pentapodus paradiseus.)
  11. Blackfish's post in Trevally, but what type (Barred Trevally) was marked as the answer
@Volitan My guess would be a Barred Trevally Carangoides ferdau.(Juvenile)  Not to uncommon in NSW.
Certainly not a Thicklip Trevally (Now called Island Jack ... Don't ask me why 🤷‍♂️ ) as there is no Gold spots on the side.
Here's a photo of a Thicklip (Island Jack) and a Barred Trevally.

Always happy to be corrected though.
  12. Blackfish's post in Please help ID (Eastern Pomfred) was marked as the answer
I recon it's a Eastern Pomfred Schuettea scalaripinnis
  13. Blackfish's post in Fish ID (Eastern Kelpfish) was marked as the answer
Eastern Kelpfish.  Also know as a Kelpie/ Kelpfish.
Rock Cales have more of a Blunt snout where Kelpfish have a more pointed snout and more smaller white spots.
They have come up on here a few times before. Can be a pain taking baits targeted at better fish but should be released unharmed.
  14. Blackfish's post in 3 Fish to id (Onespot Puller, Ling,Blackbanded Sea Perch) was marked as the answer
    My guess would be the
First one is a Onespot Puller Chromis hypsilepis
Second is a Ling  as Noelm said or another name is (Largetooth Beardie)
Third is a Blackbanded Seaperch. Hypoplectrodes annulatus
    Hope this helps 🙂

  15. Blackfish's post in What type of trevally (Bigeye Trevally) was marked as the answer
I recon that's a Juvenile Bigeye Trevally Kobi. Good stuff mate.
  16. Blackfish's post in Fish Identification Please (Cotton Mouth Trevally) was marked as the answer
Hard to say because its been dead for a while but maybe a Cotton Mouth Trevally. (Inside the mouth is white.)
  17. Blackfish's post in Tongue Eating Louse - cymothoa exigua (Mouth Parisite) was marked as the answer
Not sure if its a "Cymothoa exigua" because it says it causes the tongue to fall off and becomes the new tongue. What a nasty critter.
I think it may be a different type as the CSIRO have done a study and it doesn't seem to knock the fish around to bad.

Happy to be corrected though. 🙂

  18. Blackfish's post in Can anyone I'd this one please? (Painted Sweetlip) was marked as the answer
It's a Painted Sweetlip. (Diagramma pictum) They go by a few common names.
They change from a colourful Juvenile to that dull colour. There has been recorded juveniles in Sydney as well as more mature ones.
  19. Blackfish's post in Fish ID (Bullrout) was marked as the answer
I recon its a Bullrout because of the spines on the side of its head (Operculum).
    Good photo showing this up.👍
  20. Blackfish's post in Some sort of Wrasse? (Grass/Weed Whiting) was marked as the answer
I would guess its a Weed Whiting. Maybe a Blue, but not sure.
  21. Blackfish's post in Large school of catfish seen in middle harbour after heavy rain at the start of April (Catfish ?) was marked as the answer
Cant really see the fish in the photo but.. my guess would be Juvenile Striped Catfish which do ball up.

With your description we can only call them Catfish as the photo makes it to hard to make a positive ID.
  22. Blackfish's post in Fish I'd Sydney deep water (Anthiases Subfamily) was marked as the answer
Unfortunately, because of the distorted head and only the approx size and weight, the people in the know can only give a ID as "Genus Hypoplectrode a member of Anthiases Subfamily"

  23. Blackfish's post in Crowdy Head fish ID (Southern Maori Wrasse) was marked as the answer
Top one is a Southern Maori Wrasse or another name is Butchers Pr$#ck 🤐
  24. Blackfish's post in ID please. "Scad" was marked as the answer
    @Scratchie
I asked the people who have far more knowledge than I and without a Fin/ Ray count ETC are calling it either a Slender Scad or a Mackerel Scad.
So we will call it a "Scad"
  25. Blackfish's post in Fish ID please! (Bluelined Shrimpgoby) was marked as the answer
Ok, I've heard back from a mate.
He's calling it a "Bluelined Shrimpgoby"  Cryptocentrus bulbiceps and that's good enough for me.
Now here's the twist. It maybe the same critter as  a "Y-Bar Shrimpgoby" Cryptocentrus fasciatus
Though neither seem to be found this far south till both @twoblues and @Scratchie caught them.
