Just thought I'd put together a report on my experience tonight...
Went in at M1 (old F3) ramp around 4.30pm and headed to Juno. Parked up there for a while with 2 shovel nose rays caught but nothing else.
Moved out to Lion Is for the first time and fished a drift from the back of the island, on the incoming tide, across to the middle almost to Flint & Steel...big drift but we had fun.
3 x flattys to 45cm in 40 min straight in the ice box- on prawns and pilly tails. First one caught by friends daughter first time out fishing- she was stoked!
2 x shovel nose rays- this time even bigger
1 x baby flounder
1 x slimey for some fresh bait
then the other highlight- throw some fresh slimey on the hooks, straight away, mates reel screamed for 3 or 4 seconds, then nothing...not even 15 seconds later my reel started screaming. He pulled up his line to see no hook while i battled with this thing! I was using heavier leader on a paternoster rig. In and out the line went, with some really big head shakes in between, thinking i have the catch of a lifetime.
Eventually got it to the boat- a Bull Shark- approx 1.2-3m long. Not knowing what to do with it, I grabbed my line to lift it a little to cut it loose, but I must have place the main line near his mouth while he thrashed, gone...
Short drifted the same drift again but for nothing- right on high tide by now.
Ventured back in for drift along Juno again for 2 small flattys while I cleaned the other 3.
Great night out, for a lot of fun, with only a few keepers...will go out a little further next time as I have a taste for bit deeper water and bigger fish.
