  1. I have had three outboards of various vintages and makes. My first a Suziki 15HP two stroke 1988 vintage Always started first go cold. Was a bugger to start hot, often I just had to sit around for 1/2 hour and wait for it to cool down. Next was my Evinrude 40HP two stroke. 1982 vintage Would not idle from the day I purchased it, But after the head gasket was replaced it performed faultlessly for the next 5 years, always started first kick and never missed a beat. The only thing I had to fix, other than the head gasket was the trim & tilt cylinder that just died of old age. Replaced the seals with the kit ($65.00) and never a problem again. By the way, the t&t didnt fail, it was just leaking. My new boat had a Mercury EFI 90 four stroke NEW Brilliant, as it should be, the only 2 problems I have had is that it wouldnt start in cold weather (the dealer put in a battery that was a truck battery and only half the required CCA, And the fact that the rubber grommet that the wires and controls go through into the motor keeps coming out. Both the boat dealer and the Mercury reps ahe blamed each other, so I cant get it fixed. This is a known problem with these motors, checking the web it has ben a chronic issue in the US for years. Other than that, this is a fantastic motor. At idle the noisiest thing is the tell tale dribbling into the water
  2. I dont know, but my new 5m Stabicraft plate boat outperforms my old 5.3m Savage pressed boat by so much its just not worth mentioning. The plate boat seems to ride over chop in a way that the old Savage could never ride. But the most noticable thing is in the way it handles those big greenies. The Savage dived and bogged down with an almighty bang The Stabi hits them but rides up and over. Coming down the other side the Savage again tried to dive through the next wave sometimes almost broaching. The Stabi runs down and then starts up the other side. To date I have never had a wave over the front of the Stabi, whereas this was a regular occurance in the Savage. Stability at rest...............no contest. Stabi easily out performes most boats in this, it feel like a much bigger boat. However; In flat water, full tilt on the throttle. The Savage was much faster and quieter. Where as the Stabi sort of bogs down a bit and has noise from where the wash hits the pontoons. Horses for courses I guess

    Boat screen

Poly carbonates are very suseptable to UV radiation. Its imperative to mout the screen facing the correct way or the UV will send it milky is a short space of time. poly is also quite soft and scratches easily, just the act of wiping the window down will scratch it and if there is any residual salt it will scratch like there is no tomorrow. The acrylic is harder and (unfortunately) more brittle, it will crack and break easier than the Poly, but is superior for looking out of. So The question is do you want to be able to see out of the window, or is it just a wind break? If you need to see through it, go Acrylic If its a windbreak, go Poly Hope this is of some help.

    Broken transducer

Dont bother with superglue, its water soluable. Try using that twist together stuff. But in all honesty go buy another transducer. I ripped mine off on a submerged scrap of wood and it only cost $120.00 to replace it with a new one.

    FINS ON OUTBOARD

I am not sure if this is off topic or if it is related. I have a real steering problem with my Stabicraft plate boat. At low speed when docking or manuvering the boat is all over the place. The helm answers well after I turn the wheel and generally I have to over correct it several times to get the damn thing to go where I want it. I noticed some of you refer to wings as making steering behave differently. Could some sort of fin ...or something help me to better steer my wandering boat? Cheers

    Members Boats.

My Stabicraft 1650 Fisher. Im still waiting for the name to be finished so I can afix it. Mercury 90 HP EFI four stroker Most stable fishing boat (for its size) that I have ever been in. Tops out at 43 knots.
  7. From what I hear govco want to have fishing no take zones all the way from Woollongong to Coffs harbour. How does this fit into that plan? Unless,........... through overfishing by the big players, decimation of fish species thereby paving the way for no fishig for the future.
