  1. I recently bought a q trailer for my 4.4m runabout. One year old now and very happy with it. They are based in brookvale nsw but he will deliver anywhere in Sydney. Cheers
  2. Personally I have always used the old races on top of the new races to assist seating them correctly. I have never damaged a race or the hub when doing it that way (on trailers and land cruisers). The only time I have ever scored both a race and the inside of the hub was when I used a cold chisel when I was away from home. However the 'best' way would be to use a hydraulic press (most car workshops will have one) but they are quite expensive to purchase. Ensure that you use the brass drift so that you don't score the inside of the hub or the new race. If you ever have trouble removing the old races once you have hit the new ones in, carefully use an angle grinder to cut a slot in the old race beforehand (stops them from getting stuck)
  3. I have an old trailer that has quite a bit of pitting on one of the stub axles due to the previous owner neglecting to care for the wheel bearings. With new wheel bearings and adjustment to ensure no free play - I get a little bit of noise on the pitted side. Given there is no free play in the bearing, im not too worried about the noise and I repack the bearings regularly and have not noted any excess wear or loosening of free play during that time. Perhaps have another look at your stub axle like one of the other fellas has suggested? Cheers
  4. Evening all, Ive got a 30 yr old quintrex runabout that is in fair condition but unfortunately the trailer has some pretty bad rust throughout pretty much all of the frame and suspension. I would like to replace the trailer with a new (cost effective) galvanized trailer instead of trying to get the old trailer repaired. Has anyone got any recommendations? So far an afternoon of googling puts a trailer retailer at $1700 in front but im unsure on quality and if that includes them adjusting the rollers to suit my boat or not? Any advice would be appreciated Thanks, Kurt
  5. Afternoon all, Thanks for the replies and advice - very helpful! My local auto shop stocks the timken bearing (USA) kits with marine seals - so thats what i used when putting it back together. Ive also found the red nulon grease quite good so ive used that too. Previous owner had a set of stainless steel bearing buddies which i have reused. I'll keep an eye on the bearing adjustment but will aim to strip down in a few months for a closer look to see how well the marine seals and bearing buddies have kept the water out of the hub. Thanks again!
  6. Evening all, 2nd outing yesterday (battery was fine this time, motor performed perfectly!). But on the way home I noticed the trailer making a couple of strange noises. Jacked up the wheels at home and found a noisy wheel bearing (loose and grinding). Figured since the trailer maintenance of previous owner was unknown, I would put in new bearings and seals in. The loose side had a collapsed inner bearing but both sides were in aweful condition as far as the grease was concerned. Its all clean and fixed now! Anyway - how often do you guys change/repack your wheel bearings? Figure I'll recheck after 6 months or so? Cheers
  7. We got 2 of the automatic inflating life jackets today from the maritime van at bobbin head , $60 each after trading in our old life jackets. They seem quite good!

    Flat battery?

Evening all, Thanks heaps for the replies and advice. It didn't occur to me that I could pull start the motor but will definitely look into that for future peace of mind! I picked up a battery charger/tender so I'll just make sure I charge the battery before/after boating and then every now and again if the boat isn't used. It's parked out the front of the house, so at least it's easy to hook up to a charger. Thanks again!

    Flat battery?

Evening all, Wife and I bought out first boat yesterday (2007 40hp yam 2str on a 4.4m 1980s quintrex runabout) - in our excitement this morning we went straight to apple tree bay, launch all went ok but when went to start - we got a couple of cranks then the battery was too flat to crank? Had to get the boat back on the trailer and drive home - both pretty disappointed we couldn't wet a line. Was told the battery is 2 weeks old but I think over that time it's been started 4-5 times, accessories running but no real charging? We charged the battery at home for a few hours and then it started first go in the driveway. Planning on heading out again next weekend - hopefully goes ok. This is our first boat so we are still learning - do you guys charge the boat batteries frequently or is using the boats every week or so usually enough? Also I'm assuming we have to test start the motor at home before out fishing trips or were we just unlucky this morning? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks
  10. Great photos - thanks mate!
  11. Evening all, After advice on any good tackle shops up around Hornsby way? Just getting back into fishing and am keen on some new beach fishing gear at this stage. Pretty much starting from scratch. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  12. Evening all, Great website - has been an excellent source of information! Getting back into regular fishing now, used to fish heaps during high school and uni years. So far mainly just beach fishing on the northern beaches however also saving up for a boat so I can start exploring good fishing spots throughout the hawkesbury river! Cheers, Kurt
