  1. Haha definitely not too many around, next time I'll say hi. The cakes have been our go-to for livies the last couple of years, this year it's been plagued with jackets so moved on pretty quickly.
  2. Great report Sam. Did you launch from Rose Bay? Pretty sure I saw this majestic machine launch just after we did and then power past us as the Wedding Cakes.
  3. Great effort mate. Looks like you're onto the winning formula for the elusive jew.
  4. Thanks all. It's definitely a fish and trip to remember. Flatties too. In the process of cleaning I removed a 40cm+ lizard from it's belly.
  5. Thanks guys. Not sure what the rating on the mainline was, definitely no more the 30lb (mono) though. Leader was 40lb flurocarbon.
  6. Cheers Joe. Fresh squid did the damage. Though I know beach worms and fresh mullet have had success as well. The rig was a running star sinker -> swivel -> 2 x 6/0 circle hooks like this. (video) Rick is right. It's a Jewfish.
  7. Hey guys, Myself, and a few mates were able to get away over the weekend for some offroading, camping and fishing. We arrived late Saturday arvo and found a decent looking gutter. We rigged up, baited up and lines were in the water with daylight dwindling. Not much action that night except for a few Shovel Nose rays. With not much happening we kind of crashed watching our rods. Woke up early Sunday morning just before sunrise and baited the lines and sent them back out. As the sun peaked over the horizon my mate picked up his rod to take in some slack, he hadn't completed a full wind before the line went off with that sweet sweet buzzing sound. Whatever it was took off 100m down the beach and we gave chase. After that first run the line went really heavy, unsure what it was our initial thoughts were a big ray. After 5 or so minutes of little to no movement just dead weight, the line went off again, this time it went out. Providing what coaching I could I was telling my mate not rush he had time, but to maintain what pressure he could using the old kmart special. Lift and wind lift and wind in between the sound of beast taking line. 20 or so minutes into the battle, I catch a glimpse of the beast in the waves. The silhouette was unmistakable - I yelled for the gaf and it was brought over by one of the other guys. The battle seemed to last for hours, a couple of missed opportunities and a couple of more runs up and down the beach my moment came. The beast was exhausted, I waded out into the chest deep water and gaffed what would be the biggest fish I have ever seen in my life. I dragged the majestic creature through the breakers and onto shore. We didn't have scales, but our best guess was in the 30kg range. It measured in @ 142cm. Unfortunately we weren't able to release the creature, I think it came down to inexperience on our part on not knowing how to best land the fish so the prolonged fight left it exhausted. I was able to get it on ice fairly quickly after dispatching and cleaning so it made it back home to be split amongst 3 of us for the table. After that Sunday morning though the rest of the trip was relatively uneventful, a few whiting, couple more shovel nose rays and some fun with mullet on unweighted lines caught on bread (everything released as we definitely had enough for the table). Overall it was a memorable trip and looking forward to the next one. Thanks for reading. Nick
  8. Hey Guys, Heading up to GC in a couple of weeks and looking for a good charter. Hoping to book in advance. Anyone have any recommendations they can PM me? Cheers, Nick
  9. Thanks gents. Patonga it is, the pub and fish and chips options drove it home.
  10. Thanks Camo, Patonga looks the goods. I was thinking Ettalong might be another option, not sure how busy it gets around there.
  11. Hey Raiders, I've got a fishing trip organised in a couple of weeks with some work mates. Most of them are pretty inexperienced, some having never fished before, so I've been left in charge of location. I'm looking for a place for about 4/5 people maybe in Sydney or on the Central Coast, where we can chill on the sand with a few cold ones and wet a line. My first thoughts are The Entrance but I know how busy it can get on a weekend and I have never been successful there when it's busy. Somewhere that I can put them on some bread and butter fish would be great. Thanks in advance. Nick
  12. Thanks Steve, they didn't return from their mission. They weren't happy for frozen bait so they ended up driving to the Entrance for fresh/live stuff. By the time they got back the wives were starting brekky and I was packed up and waiting for them in the car park with a stupid grin on my face.
  13. Hey Raiders, First report as a long time lurker. Headed up to Avoca over the weekend with the family and a few mates. Got there Friday around lunch time and we decided to wet a line in the lake. I'm still relatively new to SP's and after 3 months of persistence I am just starting to see consistent results in the last couple of trips. Third cast produced a very healthy flatty that hit my Atomic Plazo Grub like a truck. Things went quiet and we packed up for the day and went home with a plan to hit rocks early Saturday morning. I was up at 5 on Saturday morning and down on the rocks by 6 for a 9:30 high tide. Got down there as another bloke was pulling in a 60cm Kingy which was very promising. I hadn't fished the rocks before with SP's so I was keen to see how they went, my mates weren't as keen on SP's so they went to source some bait. So, alone and armed with my 5" jerk shads and some nuclear chicken variety squid I was in the hunt for one of those Kings I'd just seen. Things were quiet but after about an hour and a half I hooked on, he took a couple of short runs before I was able to surf him up onto the rocks and land my first ever Bonito. A quick snap to show the other guys what they missed and my heart still racing I sent him on his way. Went quiet again after that so decided to pack up and head back for brekky, pretty chuffed with myself. Overall not an amazing weekend but still pretty happy with my results, very keen to get out there again and hunt a King on SPs. Thanks for reading raiders. Nick
