  1. Just got a Shimano anarchy 1-3kg paired with a 1000 Vanford. 6lb kairiki Slayed about 100 whiting so far on the sugapen. Fun little combo.
  2. Hi mate I already had an alvey 6500 before i asked this question. Its a great mulie thrower for tailer/salmon/mulloway but a size 3 sinker and a mullie on gangs is its absolute max. I ended up with a wilson MT8144. Throwing size 4s with a slab of tailor or whole mullet. Not far but certainly tough enough to fight sharks with. Hooked up to a big ray the first time i used it, not worried about it snapping. I doubt any rod will give you a huge cast when using big heavy baits. Any heavy rod should do, with baits this size, a long stick would probably do the job lol.
  3. Good point. I'll see how it goes over the long run before i judge it.
  4. Thanks all I agree that it could be misleading but i have no interest in misleading anyone. My knots are always tied with care and with good technique, never had a knot fail on me. I ordered some tortue online so waiting on it to be delivered. I wanted to go sharking last night but i only had half a reel of 50lb lo stretch left after all my snap offs. I went to kmart because i remembered seeing this cheap line and thought i would try it someday so took a punt and put 300m of 50lb jarvis walker hercules over the top of the 200m of lo stretch. No sharks but hooked up to a big ray within the first 20 mins. My 26kg alvey rod was bent in half, the lo stretch would have snapped under these conditions. The cheap $7 kmart line would not break. This stuff is tough as rope, looks good in high vis yellow. It is night and day difference fishing with true 50lb strong mainline compared with fragile lo stretch. Went home without losing any tackle for the first time in ages. I agree that line can snap for many reasons but 50lb line shouldnt snap so easy. Platy lo stretch, never again. Kind of regret ordering the tortue because this $7 line seems to be more than enough for the little sharks i play with.
  5. Hi all I was new to alvey reels a couple of years ago when i bought my first one. I now have 3. Because alvey recommends the use of low stretch line, I always bought platypus lo stretch for all 3 reels as it was the only one that said low stretch on the box After two years of being snapped off by small tailor on 8kg, small sharks on 15kg and last night on a small bronzie on 24kg lo stretch, i have had it with this line. If i bought 1000m of 24kg tortue, is that going to explode my fibreglass spool when i hook up to a shark? I read a forum post about a guy who used 15kg berkely big game and his reel exploded 10 minutes after spooling it. I like alvey reels but i hate lo stretch platy. Dont want to kill my spools using random line. What would be a suitable alternative for 600m+ of 24kg? Thanks
  6. I have often wondered about this. In the end, i figured that striking is such a simple motion that we can all do it with our left or right hands whereas winding has a little more coordination required and it feels unnatural to right handers to do it with their left so that must be why the majority of right handers prefer to wind with their right.
  7. Thanks guys I will try the cable ties for now. Still looking for a permanent fix. The reel is a 651e5. Not sure why wilson would install this mount as it is designed for 650 alveys and they all have the same size feet.
  8. Hi all I bought a second wilson MT8144 rod but this time its the alvey version. The reel is loose when fully clamped inside the reel mount. I tried putting electircal tape around the reel "feet" but its still wobbles around. Anyone know a more permanent way to fix this? Thanks
  9. Mulloway dont need anything special. They arent good fighters, they just need line to run and wear themselves out. I use a cheap Wilson MT8144 and have never had a problem with mulloway. This rod is probably overkill and too heavy for most people but good for throwing out big slabs of tailor.
  10. Thanks guys I tied it to a 5kg weight plate. It snapped well before it moved the plate. Could just be a bad batch. Moved up to 15kg anyway and the tailor didnt seem to mind. I use a 30cm wire trace on all my tailor rigs. It didnt snap at the tackle end, it snapped like halfway when i striked.
  11. Hi all I usually use 7-8kg line for tailor fishing on the beach. I just put 500m of platipus lo stretch 8kg line on my reel. Caught 2 tailor then the line simply snapped when striking the third. I rigged up again and then the line snapped while fighting a small tailor. Cant remember any line being this weak. Is it just this brand? Or is it because its low stretch and requires a more gentle touch? Would i be better off switching to 15kg lo stretch for tailor and salmon if i want to stay with this type of line? Not sure whether to buy 7kg of a different type of line or buy 15kg of this line. What line weight do you use for tailor and slamon beach fishing on choppy beaches? Thanks
  12. Thanks guys. Checked out the butterworth, looks like a beast. Pity they dont make it anymore. Perhaps I shouldn't have said "big" sharks. I'm talking 6-8' range. I have caught many on this reel using a 24kg boat rod. The alvey is practically a winch at this range. Guess i'll have to buy a blank and make my own. Cheers.
  13. Hi all I need a heavy beach rod for shark fishing. I am using an alvey 651e5 with 50lb lo stretch platypus. I was using a short alvey 24kg boat rod and droppinng the baits with a kayak but due to a recent shark attack encounter I would now like to cast the bait instead at night. Everywhere i go, like bcf, rays outdoors and other tackle shops, they only sell surf rods up to 10kg. Any recommendations on a tough beach rod that can take an alvey would be greatly appreciated. Also, where to buy it from? Thanks
