  1. Just had a look at the Polycraft. Not bad looking...
  2. g'day, currently have a Quintrex Fishabout II, two motors both Mercs (30 and a 6 - backup), new bimini, tilt trailer etc. It is an excellent first boat and exceptionally well built. I am, however, looking to upgrade and want to spend about 10k. I would 'really' prefer aluminium as I like the fact they don't have to be nursed as much. The larger the better and would love it to be quieter than the fishabout as my son loves the boat but it can be a little loud when giving it some throttle. So am looking for some brands etc on what to target and maybe some examples. Have been scouring a popular boating site for a few days now. Cheers.
  3. hahaha... Two boats drove by him......He was not hard to miss, standing on the stern, bouncing and frantically waving his arms. I assumed they were just in a hurry or ticked off as they probably didn't catch anything that day... He was heading in to the rocks and was only about 15 metres away before he threw me the rope. Still, I'd have done anything to delay the embarrassment of getting home fishless.......
  4. Well, got my downrigger, 8lb bombs (just in case I loose the first) and headed out to the bait grounds. Picked up 1 squid in 3 drifts and 4 yakkas. That was all I was going to need. Monday morning and I thought it was going to be a little quieter but I should have known. A lot of boats which wasn't all that bad as I got to chat with a few. Started downrigging around middle head for nothing. But wound up and my squid had gone without a trace. On goes a yakka and started putting along for nothing. North Head and 20 mins there for nothing. Was a great day weather wise, albeit cloudy, and decided to check out the other markers. Didn't get anything and didn't see anyone getting anything. First time using downrigger and I thought it was great. I could see the bomb on the sounder so it was easy to avoid the bottom. Headed back in to Roseville after letting all the livies go (they all survived) and was waved down by a bloke on a yatch. Somehow they had drifted from their archoring bouy. 'Give us a tow'.....no probs. Merc 30 in a quinny fishabout pulling a yatch who in turn was connected to a boat who was connected to a dingy.......I was impressed... till next time.......hopefully with a pic of a kingy big enough to drag me, a yatch and a couple-a boats Cheers
  5. G'day Steve, What rigs were you using when you were getting smoked? Cheers Catchy
  6. [quote name=d()b' post='335847' date='Dec 23 2009, 06:05 PM] Thanks Andrew. Is Calamari good to be fished all day round or only at night? db db, I've had one of my best squid sessions down at JB in the middle of the day when the sun was blaring.....we picked up more than we could possibly eat in only a few minutes..... good luck Catchy
  7. Top report Spongy......and well done one the personal best.....
  8. OK, I fit the x52 and it is a far better unit. Thought I'd add that in case any one else needed to make the comparison.
  9. G'day Paul, Excellent report mate. And three cheers for you for not being shy about giving up your spot (not that Bal is a secret).... Cheers Catchy
  10. Thanks all...am fitting the Lowrance before the weekend..
  11. any particular reason or you just like the brand?
  12. G'day all, With the purchase of my boat I got both an Eagle Cuda 168 which is currently fitted and a Lowrance x52 brand new in the box. I used the Cuda on the weekend but found that even a little bit of movement of the boat showed fish....slow right down and the fish disappeared from the screen. I have not played with any of the setting including sensitivity but will have a chance this weekend. For those that know of both units, which is the best unit, if one is indeed better than the other? Should I go to the effort if fitting the x52 or keep the 168 in the boat? Cheers Catchy
  13. g'day all, Well, I was looking for a boat for all of about 12 minutes when I emailed a mate, Natho, asking him to pick one out for me. Natho tells me another mate, Fredo, is selling his old '79 Quintex runabout 4.37m with a Merc 30 and a Merc 6. This boat has served us well down the coast for many years. Anyway, minutes late it was mine..... Took it out this weekend to begin to learn the art of boatcraft and after overcoming a flat battery, we had a great day out. Didn't do much fishing, just cruised about. Getting a full service on both motors some time this week and should be good as new by next. Should fit the live tank and pump this week ready for the summer action. Anyway, just wanted to share my story hope to see many of you out there.... ohh, and I do not know the harbour at all so if anyone wants to PM me a few spots I can try, would be much appreciated... Cheers Catchy
