  1. I used to go fishing with a mate who always bought the bait and I never took much notice or asked how he prepared his bait. Alas he has been gone now for a number of years but I thought that I see if I could find out the best way to prepasre his bait. All I know was that he had screw top containers with chunks of bait mostly slimies or salmon which he put in the jars with salt he would then date the containers and I remember that some of the stuff was quite old but certainly worked if the hooks didn't kill the fish the smell would have. So I have the jars I have the bait and I have a bag of pool salt any advice what to do next and where the best place is to store the jars.
  2. Hi again can I please have an identification on the attached. These were being spat out by Flathead being caught off Bermagui this morning about 150 mm long
  3. Excellent thanks Steve0
  4. These 2 photos are the only ones and fish was returned to the water. Good point though next time I will get photos from all angles theank you gents.
  5. t Caught off Bermagui in 35 mtrs. on bait
  6. Yes that is an excellent addition
  7. Ended up going with these connectors from online supplier in China IP68 rated I like to have my connections under the gunnels but they are also available in other mounting types and also up to 7 pins
  8. I am enquiring as to what people are using to connect their electric reels. I am currently using Anderson plugs but find that the ones on the boat are corroding fairly quickly even though I do have covers on them. Any suggestions for a better alternative?
  9. My mate and I are always trying to out do each other coming up with different rigs and set ups. What I would like to know does any one think that they have the perfect tried and true flathead rig other than the patanoster that dosen't twist and tangle yet out performs in 30-40 metres.
  10. Snagged by a micro jig off Bermagui I assume some sort of Urchin? Didn't touch it being very aware of the spikes.
  11. Made up aluminium base on stove and tapped 8mm threads into alloy down rigger mount stove drops onto studs.
  12. I want to buy a Shimano Speedmaster II and would like to get one that has similar dimensions to my Penn Fathom II 25NLDII. I am not worried about line capacity but actual physical dimension width of the spool. I can't seem to find any schematics on line that show the Shimano dimensions. Can anyone help me between the 8,10,12 Thanks

    extra display

I currently have 2 Lowrance HDS Live units mounted on the dash one for fishfinding and one for mapping but am considering mounting another one at the rear of the boat at the baitboard for fishfinding only so as to be able to keep an eye on the bottom when fishing over reefs. Looking at not spending too much can any one tell me other than live or carbon units which other displays can be networked with the live units. And is there an alternative to the Lowrance ethernet cable looking at prices the length that I will need is as much as a display will be.
  14. Curiosity got the better of me so I pulled the reel apart to make sure that everythig was as it should be. All parts were as the parts diagram showed and whilst I wouldn't say that the drag was full of grease it certainly was well greased. So I cleaned off the excess grease and reassembled. This made a huge difference I can now get in excess of my drag at stirke that I require. So I would imagine that after a bit of use and the drag has bedded in there should be no more of an issue. And yes I am very confident in overhauling reels and do quite a few for the locals so no issue there and always use the correct tools so as not to leave any tell tale marks.
  15. Yep checked that is not the issue thanks.
  16. Yes less line more drag that is my issue I can only get 8lb with a full spool so I was wondering if I was over filling. I have just posted in regard to this issue.
  17. I have a new Penn Fathom II 25 NLD2 and can't get anymore that about 8lb of drag at the strike position. If I turn the drag knob further the reel then loses its free spool action. Now I know that I can contact the dealer and send it back but before I do this I was just wondering if anyone else has had this issue and if so what was the fix. Could it be that the reel has not been used yet and needs to bed in? I had wondered if it was related to the amount of line on the spool hence my other posting. Thanks
  18. The main reason that I ask is that I am having an issue with the drag not being very strong and I was wondering if this was a case of more line having some sort of mechanical advantege. I will post my issue on another post and see what replies that I get.
  19. Hi I have a Penn Fathom 2 overhead reel and the instructions say to fill to the outer line on the spool. So am I corrrect in saying that the silver ring closest to braid is the maximum fill point and not to the outside of the black edge. I am filling off a bulk spool so have no way of measuring stated line capacity.
  20. Just been given a selection of knife jigs for kingfish so need to buy a jigging combo. Therfore looking for suitable set ups that wont cost a fortune please.
  21. A mate and myself are always trying new ways of tying fishing rigs for catching mainly flathead and snapper to improve our catch. I have another mate from Victoria who rejects all of our research and always ties his own fan dangled set up but always manages to catch fish on the most unlikely looking set up. So would anyone like to comment and prefferably with pictures/drawings show their prefered set up with dimensions for the 2 main species that I have mentioned as well as anything else.

    pie warmer

Looking at installing a pie warmer/oven to my boat I already have one of the plastic plug in food warmers but want to upgarde to a bigger unit. There appears to be a few on the market and some very similar looking. From previous experience an anyone suggest the best one to purchase?
  23. Thanks for the offer Frank but I have plenty of gps marks for the area as you said I was mainly after snapper spots at the island I have put your mark in my sounder and will give it a go thank you.
  24. Thought I might try heading out to Montague island before sun up to try for some snapper this week. Can any one give me some gps marks as a strating point where I am likely to encounter some. I am aware of the layout of the island and surrounds so if marks are not available a bit of a guide to a suitable area would suffice.
