  1. Hey guys, I posted last week asking for advice on metal lure fishing off the beach as I was going to see multiple beaches along the coast. Due to fires, plans have changed and I'm now stuck in Jervis Bay (poor me). I'm not having much luck with the lures though. Many spots are banned from fishing and many spots just seem to calm/shallow to fish? Like the water of the beach is just crystal clear and still, to the point I can see my lure the whole way in. Does anyone have a recommendation for spots to try in the area? Cheers
  2. Cheers, Can I also ask - would you be using a swivel/snap to connect it to the line? Where possible i dont like to use a trace - so some people have advised using these to prevent the line from twisting.
  3. Hey guys, Im not a regular fisher - i get out there maybe a few times a year and when i do, its normally to soak a bait off the rocks. Next week me and my partner are hiring a campervan for 9 days and making our way down the coastline from sydney, stopping over wherever we end up each day. Since there will be no propper showers and its a rented van i dont reeally want to get all stinky with baits when i fish - thus i want to have a crack at metal lure fishing off the beaches we go to, but have virtually no experince at it, so i wanted to see if you guys could help me out. Firstly, im looking at taking: my 10ft6 rod - https://www.a shop.com.au/p/wilson-trophy-surf-rod-10ft6in/112178.html sphereos sw5000 reel- https://www.a shop.com.au/p/shimano-spheros-5000sw-spinning-reel/357644.html#q=sw5000&lang=en_AU&start=4 with platypus lo-stretch 8kg monoline. Is this a suitable setup for throwing some metal lures on the beach? Iv had some peopel tell me to switch over to braid, but honestly i hate tying knots with that stuff. Secondly, what kind of lures should i be using/ what weight? (any recommednations?) Lastly, what is the best rig/knots for this kind of fishing? Cheers guys
  4. Okay so basically everyone has said that icing them as soon as they are caught, then fridging for a few days is fine. is icing 100% necessary? Im land based only, thus i would need to carry around and esky with ice - And a majority of places i go, especially where i plan to fish this weekend are a huge hike from the car - so its not really plausible. It wouldn't be okay to just kill the fish and chuck it in a flannel bag and continue fishing for like the next hour or two?(all my fishing is done at night, so no direct heat from the sun) Then take them home and chuck it in the fridge.
  5. Only ever really caught one fish per session before, thus i would just take it home, fillet and cook it that day/night. If i were to catch more than just one fish, how do i go about storing them so i can eat them on following days? Do i just chuck them in the fridge/freezer? if so how long would they last before spoiling? Wouldn't want to keep any fish which i would not be able to eat before they go bad. Im not a very spiritual person or anything, but it would feel respectful to kill a fish and let it go to waste. In addition, im looking to try fresh/live beach worms as bait. How can i preserve them to keep them alive overnight (like if i get them at 5pm but don't go fishing until 4am) Cheers
  6. Staying at a place in Avoca beach towards the end of next month for a few days, its rare that i get the chance to fish without having to travel 2hours each way of the location - so im looking to get a bit done. Does anyone have any tips about the area? From a quick search i can see that there are a tone of varying reviews. i mostly just bait fish - im assuming the southern rock face and the beach are the best spots for this? Looks like a good place to throw some metal lures off the rocks at sunrise/set. Never used lures before, any recommendations?
  7. Yeah, im actually using the Platypus Platinum ultra thin or something. Its like half the thickness of regular line, and has very little stretch. you think going down a bit will make a noticeable difference? I was using braid for a while, I did like it quite a lot. Other than price, the issue i had was swivels being the absolute devil to tie - especially in the dark with just a torch. I would prefer to just tie my rig directly on the main line. When i was using it though i was just flicking lures around at wharf's and not looking at catching distance. might swap back to it for a while and see if it changes anything. You think it will make a significant impact? i was thinking like 5m at the most
  8. Hey guys, Trying to get into finishing, but facing a few hiccups. I don't own a boat, so i'm only land based. Im struggling to cast my line out any further than 30 odd meters. In some places this is fine, like Wharfs and some rocks etc. But im trying to do some beach fishing - and in most locations 30m isnt far enough to get over the waves/ into some gutters etc. Just wanted to make sure its not my set up that's causing these me issues. I have a 10'6ft rod (6kg rating), and a Spheros SW 5000 reel with 8kg mono on it. i typically use size 2 or 3 hooks with medium sized baits (pillies etc) and a size 2 or 3 star sinker. ( often in a paternoster rig- directly on the main line) The one suggestion an old bloke gave me the other week was to switch to braid. However braid is quite a bit more expensive, and i often get snags and lose a tone of line. In addition my reel apparently has a really shallow spool - so it doesnt hold that much line. Meaning when i do get a couple of snags, i have to replace the whole spool of line because its so underspooled (wish i purchased a bigger reel) Is there something wrong here? or is it just my technique? I swear as a kid i used to be able to do atleast 40 with ease. Cheers
