Well done on the first good fish on your new graphite rod.Flathead always seem to be the first capture for many starting out fishing soft plastics & light graphite rods matches to small high quality spin reels.They are a great sportfish. I remember a few years ago starting out just like you with the graphite rods,small spin reels & braided lines, after catching my first fish,a flathead just like you,i have never looked back. All my old ugly sticks & other custom fibreglass rods now just sit in the garage gathering dust,while i now have a collection of various Graphite rods,good spin reels or Baitcasters & all spooled with braided lines. Now ever since my first flathead,the list of other species that i have caught is just so long its unbelievable,and the fight is always so much more better & exciting on graphite rods using braided line's. You will now get addicted to it just like evey other fisho that does!! cheers mate Steve

Even if anyone was interested,who can travel the 100nm distance out there anyway?? Longliners these days catch most of there Fin 50nm plus off the coast year round. Anything past Heatons Hill is way too far for any recreational fisho to be interested in off Sydney.

Nice Flathead,well done.

Snuck out for an arvo session with plastics off Botany Bay on friday.Fished in between 20 to 30m of water with 6inch gulps & 5/8 size jighead. I use a 3000 size team daiwa exceler with 15lb fins braid,20lb pink ande leader on a 7ft Daiwa Procaster-Z Graphite 8-12lb flick stick. Got some rubbish fish for the first hour or so like sargent baker's,red rock cod & pike.But i kept persisting knowing the reds are on the bite of late.With continous casting,letting it sink & working it back,i finally got what i was after & a nice fish nailed my soft plastic half way down on the drop.The fish screamed some line off the reel & with the rod locked up solid i had a nice little fight with a few good head shakes on the line which was a good indication it was a snapper. After a short but spirited 5 minute battle a nice reddie came to the surface & scooped up in the net.Lost another fish after i got smacked again on the drop again about 15min later,but what felt like a better fish disloged the lure during all the head shakes. I was a bit dissapointed,but content to end up with 1 fish which weighed 1.40kg.Tasted pretty good cooked tonight with a few chips & some salad,my 2 girls & i had a nice feed out of it. cheers Steve

Top report & photo's of your awesome trip to Weipa,well done on some top size threadfin as well.Ive been up there myself a couple of times & love the place.Your report relives some great memories for me as well of my trips there, which sound very similar to yours.But the only fish which eludes me still is a big threadfin(something to look forward to next trip).We always fish north of weipa,all the rivers,beaches & offshore reefs.Last trip we absolutely brained the longtail bluefin tuna,catching about a dozen every morning then moving into rivers to fish the runout for barra or the beaches where we target big golden trevally,blue threadfin & queenfish on the flats. Like you,if i was given the chance to go tomorrow i would jump at it. cheers Steve

Botany bay usually slows down this time of year,it will probably be like that for another couple of months till the water warms up a bit. Sydney harbour is doing much better & its the place to fish at the moment with trevally,tailor,bream,snapper plus some rat kings all biting well with a bit of berley & fishing lightly weighted fresh baits at anchor around the moorings or beacons. cheers Steve
