  1. sorry for the absence of a report. I started the day under the harbour bridge at first light. Hadn't caught anything by 11 so I caught the ferry to circular quay and went round to the Piers. No luck there either after an hour or so, started to walk back to circular at about 1ish. I sight casted at some bream which were moving through the ferry wharves but only had 1 follow, it looked more like an aggressive chase away than a hunt. Only thing I brought home was the water on my lines. It was still good to just get out of the house and have a change of scenery.
  2. Was it at least somewhat fun going through the chop Dave, or was it just a drag?
  3. Thanks for the replies guys, I'll definitely be wearing some warmer clothes now. With the chart saying it'll be southerlies ill try to fish the northern side of the bridge first before the wind picks up. Hopefully I don't end up getting busted off like James did, I thought of bringing a net and that just sunk the nail in the coffin for bringing one with a longer handle. Ill see if I can rig up a rod camera on the bigger rod, might come in handy.
  4. Hey Raiders, I plan to try my luck at getting onto some pelagics around the harbour bridge tomorrow morning, and would appreciate any tips or gossip that might help me hook up. *sorry for the long winded post but thought i'd include as much detail as I could* Ill have a lighter Savage Gear Black Savage combo- 7ft 5-8kg rod with a 3000 sized reel with 12lb braid/leader for flicking small metals and hardbodies. Then a 5'9" 7.5-15kg rod or similar with a Shimano 6000 OC Baitrunner reel spooled with 20lb braid/flurocarbon for throwing heavier metals, bigger poppers, larger hardbodies, plugs. Then depending on how much I can carry, an Abu Garcia 5'6" 7-10kg C-Stick overhead rod with a 6500 C3 Ambassaduer reel with again 20lb braid and flurocarbon, as it has a lower gear ratio, less line capacity and I can't cast as far with it, I will use it for my heavier topwater slow action lures. As for lure range I will be bringing with me a couple 3-8g squidjigs, a couple 5-15g metals, several 40-150g metals/metal jigs, a variety of 3-8cm hardbodies/divers, several 8-16cm hardbodies/divers, a couple 45-85g plugs (size 3 richter and a 45g longtom), a couple 80mm poppers (one homemade and one roosta popper), a 135mm roostapopper, a few 8-12cm softbodies, and a homemade skute (a 1/4 oz jighead with blue and red pipecleaners tied on). I will also be bringing some hooks for just incase I get a squid or something that I can have as a livebait. I don't plan on keeping any fish I catch but if I get a small Bonito I might have sashimi for lunch. Regardless of the outcome I will post a report sometime tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully I will be acknowledging some of you for your wisdom in an exciting report. Cheers PS: I do know what I'm doing, but I thought I might aswell ask for some advice. There is always more to learn and discover.
  5. ok, ill have to try that one out.
  6. @slothparade what modelling software do you use? and is it free?
  7. For those who arent on tinkercad here are some examples of models I have made. I have also made a popper with a spinning section which does what its designed to do but I need to refine my thruwire skills so that the lure cant move on the wire and doesnt break too easily. The First lure was "not in any way shape or form" based off of an ecogear SX 40(F).
  8. I haven't had squid from that close to the bridge but I do have squid from around Clifton gardens (close to spot X). No issues so far (that I know of) even after bagging out on calamari.
  9. if you comment on the models i can give details about them individually. I would try offsetting the sinkers to be as low in the model as you can get away with.
  10. I can give you some advice on this as ive had a shot at it myself. Yes you can 3D print lures, ive made multiple and I use tinkercad (a free cloud based 3D modeling software). Tinker cad has basic functions but if you can get your head around inverting copies of shapes to get more complex surfaces, its worth it. To make them sit properly I suggest having cavities in the model and or having recesses for sinkers. I have made some poppers which i have tested in my pool, and they do displace relatively decent water and make good bubble trails. If you search up nyxyn.mason in tinker cad you can see my models. Hope this helps.
  11. Haven't personally caught any but my father has, he got two about the 50 cm range if i can remember correctly.
  12. i think that they are around the navy ships, some near manly and some near shark island, mind you this is what i gathered from seeing bustups last weekend.
  13. well done, i recently snapped a rod on a leaping bonito 54cm. was only 2-4 kg rod because it came out of the blue while fishing for tailor, still landed the fish though. Good report
  14. Hi Raiders, been a while since I last posted but hopefully my reports will become more frequent. Went out on Sunday arvo with dad on the 28th, hoping to get some bustup action. The chop around darling Harbour was disgusting but once we were past the zoo it was much better. We scouted around the Navy ships to no avail so we stopped by one of the ferry channel markers and dropped metals. I was using a Kato jigging metal with only assist hooks on my Abu-garcia ambassaduer combo with 20lb braid(ALDI stuff) and 20lb fluorocarbon leader. After 5 minutes of jigging I was on. The hit wasn't as aggressive as I thought it would've been so initially I didn't think I had anything to spectacular on. As the time went by it kept getting heavier and heavier, then I realised it was a kingie (making me relieved I had retied the leader on). After about ten minutes of back and forth she was in the net. She broke the previous largest kingie in the boat and my PB from 72cm to 84cm. After a short celebration we were back at it but couldn't get another. After chasing a school of kingfish/salmon around shark island which were pushed down by a ferry and not getting any we decided to anchor up at another marker. With only catching one legal flattie, little pinkies and a ray another couple hours later the decision to go back home was made. Hopefully I haven't faffed on too much.
  15. I dont have one on the boat but this seems like a great excuse to me. was going to suggest a parachute but your problem was current not wind. Also great report and well done
  16. I had a few ecogear sx 40 lures(left one on a hire boat but it was the least successful one that I had so it wasn't the end of the world). I am yet to catch a bream on one but have caught plenty of flathead and a couple tailor. my best two colours are 339 & 333(without the vertical stripes) the one I lost was a 343.
  17. I have a pen spinfisher combo which was bought about 8 years ago and is still going strong. The only problem ive had with the downrigger, is when the braid gets twisted from the squid spinning in the water if i dont pin the squid directly in the center. if/ when this happen theres no point trying to untwist the line as it will just twist its self even worse the next drop. I can see the use of a dual drag reel but if you can get to the rod quick enough to tighten the drag up after a fish pops it off the downrigger you should be fine. I have always used that method as when ive used a dual drag reel i dont like the sudden jolt from the tighter drag taking over. Thats just my opinion tho, so whatever floats your boat, go for it.
  18. Ive been targeting kings for a while now and have noticed that over the past couple months the kings have been more peckish and not hooking up properly (probably user error). The ones that actually get in the boat have been smaller and the fights deceiving. going out tomorrow to chase kings in the harbour and will post a report regardless of outcome. hope this helps
  19. That cuttlefish looks evil, can't get over the colour of its eyes.
  20. a whole reel of PLA ( which is what i use) costs between ten bucks and fifty depending on where you get it from and the quality. so the cost of the individual lure is only a couple of cents
