  1. Couple of weeks ago was catching some good mahi off the FADs and was seeing lots of reports too of people doing the same, haven’t been out since then and haven’t seen many reports of mahi, has anyone been out there recently or had any luck, or is the water getting to cold now? Thanks
  2. With really good weather on for Tuesday, I was keen to get offshore, got to the ramp at 5:30 and headed off to get some livies, they were easy to get and filled up the tank in no time. The ride offshore was smooth and got to the spot right on the run up to the tide. Like the last couple weeks the rat kings were everywhere, one after the other pretty much, taking anything they see in front of them. Had fun on those for a couple hours until it went a bit quite. Decided to start using the biggest yakkas I had to try stop the hungry rats from biting which worked a little bit. After soaking a big yakka on the down rigger for 20mins I finally get a good run and could tell it was very big, after fighting it for 5mins trying to keep it off the reef finally landed it and went 104cm, new PB, which we then revived and swam off strongly. We then trolled around till all our yakkas were gone and headed back to the ramp. All in all was a great day, didn’t get a feed but got a new PB.
  3. Hi Raiders, Have been doing a couple trips to longreef last couple weeks and have noticed that I can only catch kings when I have high tides in the morning and can’t seem to get any kings at all when there is a low tide in the morning. Was planning on going out tomorrow but noticed low tide is around 9 o’clock. Would it be worth it going? Or is it just me who can’t catch them when tide is low. If not any recommendations were I can find some kings offshore that are not to far from the heads as only have a 4.6m boat. Any help would be much appreciated thanks you.
  4. Haven’t been to longreef in about a month, just been fishing around goat island which is been very consistent last couple of weeks but want to change it up, anyone been there recently and are Kingies there yet?
  5. What downrigger you going to get, looking at getting one soon as well
  6. Planning going out wide tomorrow with very good conditions, I usually go to long reef, my boat is 4.6m and has 50L fuel tank, but want to go to 12 for the first time how long does it usually take u guys to get to 12 mile and how much fuel do you go through? Have 50hp Johnson, 4 Stroke Thanks
  7. Hey everyone, Looking to buy a downrigger for my boat but can’t decide. I mostly will use it for trolling around the harbour and offshore around longreef. Anyone have any recommendations on what downrigger would be best, would really appreciate it. Thanks.
  8. Thanks, will give it a try on Thursday and will see how I go
  9. Planning on going outside on Thursday with good weather, I’ve recently been going to longreef and getting a couple snapper and a king here and there but have been seeing reports of people getting lots of flathead out wide and have heard that they are pretty easy to catch once u find the spot. I’m still quite new to fishing outside the heads as only got a boat big enough this winter so I’m still learning about all the different spots to fish out there. I searched up the gps marks on the internet to see if there was a flathead mark around Sydney but could not find any, if anyone could point me in the right direction for where to find the flathead outside or where to get the gps marks for them it would be greatly appreciated thanks ,Max
  10. Planning on heading up to longreef this weekend, just wondering what’s biting there, looks like kings have been slow there and people have been just getting snapper on recentish reports? Also I had an issue with my Garmin Echomap UHD 75SV fish finder as on the screen the down scanner has been flipped and is up side down, I’ve messed around in settings and can’t find anything to fix it, if anyone knows a fix for it would be much appreciated ,Thanks
  11. Have been fishing around middle harbour for kingfish lately and have been getting lots of bust offs recently. I generally use lighter line because I’m feel like it generally gets more bites. For bait and lures, I’m using 12-14 pound mono and for live bait I’m using heavy braid (not to sure on weight) but I do notice that it rarely gets hit and when I put live bait on 14 pound mono with 30lb mono leader I notice strike rate is higher but I lose the fish a lot more often. I’m wondering what you guys are using to catch kings and if I should go more heavy and whether braid or mono is the way to go, Thanks Max.
  12. First time cooking it so decided to get a recipe online and chose this one. https://surleplat.com/recipe-items/cobia-provencal-with-tomatoes-basil-and-capers/
  13. Went out on the weekend with a mate in hope for some kingfish, like usual we got several yakkas from the usual spot and tried for squid but couldn’t get any. Couple of days ago we we catching salmon on top water bust ups for hours and searched the morning for them but couldn’t find any as they must have moved on. So we took the tinny back to middle harbour to sink our yakkas. Like usual it is was slow, it’s been very hard to get kings for some reason this season. Then the live bait rod buckled over, it was a slowish but strong run and I grabbed it as fast I could, I had no clue what it was until I saw it’s fin cutting through the top of the water after fighting it to the top, I was in dis-belief, a cobia in middle harbour? After many netting attempts we finally landed it. The fish measured 72cm and unfortunately swallowed the hook so we brought him home which provided for a great dinner.
  14. Anyone been catching kings in middle harbour lately, been throwing everything at them, yakkas, squid and lures but no luck. Got a hook up at seaforth this weekend and it busted off, that’s the only sign of them I’ve had in recent months. Are they just really quite at this time?
  15. You can get them in wharatah bay, they are everywhere, just anchor up at least 10 meters from the shore and berley up and they will come within 5mins in the dozens
  16. Hey guys, I have been chasing kings the last couple days around middle harbor to have walked away with and a empty bag most of the time. Everyone who seems to be catching the big winter kings all seem to be catching them on fresh squid. I usually go get yakkas in the morning at Balmoral and also flick my squid jig around there too but get no luck. Any advice on were they are or what colour squid jig I should be using would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  17. Taking the tinny out tomorrow night looking for hairtail, I don’t want to take my boat to far in the dark for a first time trip. Does anyone know if the hairtail are at Akuna bay or Waratah bay at the moment which are not to far away from the boat ramps. Thanks
  18. Thanks everyone for the replies, ended up going to balmoral and picked up some yakkas, all which were quite large. Ended up only have one yakka getting taken at the boat wreck at quakers point and then as soon as king was at the boat it spit the fish as we didn’t let it eat the yakka long enough.
  19. Thanks! I’ll give it a go tomorrow morning
  20. Thanks for the reply, do you know any spots for yakkas in middle harbour as my tinnie struggles a bit in the Sydney harbour and I just plan on fishing middle harbour tomorrow
  21. Went out on the tinny on a beautiful morning today around middle harbour and ended up catching one rat 55cm king, all we are using right now is pilchard and squid from the servo. We went around to rocky point at Balmoral and couldn’t catch or see any yakkas or squid. Do you guys have any tips or places I could go to get some yakkas or squid? Thanks 😀
