  1. I anchored myself between one of the rocks by sitting down with my legs spread forward (my foot was touching the other rocks) and had my rod inbetween my legs. So I wasn't standing up during the fight with my arms doing all the work (I am not that strong haha)
  2. I like to use uni knots with about 6 twists. Is this knot not good for heavier lines? If so what knots would you recommend.
  3. Hello fellow radiers. Today I was at the Murrays Beach boat ramp inside Jervis Bay and fished the rockwall next to the ramp. I used a big chunk of tailor fillet as bait on a 6/0 hook connected to a 3-way swivel with a sinker on the other end. The gear I used was a Daiwa Saltist WN rod 8 foot (Max pe 8 XH) with a Penn Spinfisher 9500 Vi spooled with about 450m of 80lb ebay braid. Leader was black magic 130lb monofilament line. It took about an hour to get a bite, saw the rod bending and the drag very slowly getting pulled out. When I picked up the rod and started the fight, the fish must've realised it has been hooked as it went for a massive run (about 150m or so). When the fish stopped, I tightened the drag nearly to the max (approx 20kg) and started to pump my rod. However, after a minute or two it decided to go for another run, pulling out another 100m of line on max drag. The higlight is towards the end of the fight, the ray came and jumped on the surface a couple times - almost thought it was a marlin or something at first LOL 😂. But soon after my leader gave out and popped . The entire fight lasted about 20 minutes. How heavy do you think this ray was? Later in the day I had another run in with a big ray using the exact same setup and bait. But this time the fight only lasted about 30 seconds before my mainline above the leader got cut off from the rocks. The silver lining was that there were big schools of trevallies close to the rock wall. I've caught 3 legal ones and took them home and made sashimi (many and many undersized ones were caught and released). Also big schools of drummers as well, biggest one I saw was around 60-70cm underwater but didn't catch any legal size for them.
  4. By tabouri island are you referring to crampton island? I searched it up on youtube and it looks promising. WIll the beach be crossable on high tide? How deep will the water be at high tide.
  5. Have a family trip booked at Ulladulla soon. And I really have to move as a team since the purpose of this trip is not entirely focused on fishing. I'd love to hit up the ledges at jervis bay on the way to try for some pelagics but I don't think others in my family appreciate that (since they are mostly non-fishos ). But luckily I think I will have the evening of one of the days to actually fish. My first question is whether there are any fish species that I can reliably chase near Ulladulla that I cannot reliably target in Sydney? Would be a tiny bit disappointed if the only things on the table are the usual estuary species such as flatties and bream lol. And are there any good spots? So far I am looking at the rocks north of Mollymook beach and the platforms below warden head lighthouse. Would love spots where I can get a shot at legal snappers and some kingies.
  6. Thank you so much for the info I got way more than what I asked for . Just a few questions.... Is backing necessary? Because most people have told me that newer reels do not really need backing as they are well suited to braid and so far I don't think I had trouble with having only braid on my reels. And any tips on avoiding nasty snags while lure fishing. It's always a sad day when I lose $25 worth of gear on my 1st or 2nd cast although I understand that snags are a part of fishing from land.
  7. Thanks to all for the helpful replies. I will get myself a ligther rod and some 4-6lb braid as suggested. And also should I get an ultra light rod or just a lighto rod? Because some rods are rated around 2-10g but one is ultra light while the other is just light. I am mainly looking to throw soft plastics and small jerk/crankbaits.
  8. I have a light rod rated 5-20g and I am really struggling to cast light jig heads around 1/6oz, I am using 9lb mono line. I think I am only covering like 10-15m of distance with my cast and I feel nothing at the end of my rod. It feels like I am striking thin air when I am giving action to my rod . And my rod also sort of just wobbles and doesn't feel right. Using heavier lures I can cast 50m easily and really feel the lure at the end of my rod tip doing the work. Is it my technique that is wrong? or is it my setup? I need some advice. Thanks to everyone in advance.
  9. I have a heavy (stiff) 8'2" popper/stickbait rod that I use for casting large lures and baits. Should I be using this rod to throw knife jigs and metals (shore jigging) etc? Or is the rod tip too stiff?
  10. UPDATE: As you guys have suggested. I have sent the reel back to a shimano service center.
  11. I have a reel that would occasionally close during casting due to the bail arm not being locked open properly. And if I get really unlucky I would lose entire rigs and lures due to the recoil of my cast snapping the contents of the line. I am pretty sure this is due to a defect in the spring that opens/closes the bail. The reel is a shimano aerlex 10000xsb. I think it is still under the warranty period. But I believe this is a really simple fix and I can do it myself without going through all of the troubles of sending it back and forth. Where can I find the bail springs for these reels? Should I visit my local tackle shop when they are back open?
  12. I am definitely affected The only body of water I have within 10km is the Georges river that flows next to Henry Lawson drive. This area is really fished out...
  13. As others have stated. Using a ball sinker or using a 3 way sinker rig will work just fine. I have caught a lot of big flatties and few salmon using this method. But just be aware that using heavy sinkers will tire out the live bait quickly and quite often the quality big fish you want may be feeding on top water and not the bottom.
  14. I am planning to cast livies out in the surf and use on the rocks to target grouper etc.
  15. I bought a used spinfisher VI 10500 and the previous owner had 100lb mono on it. I have never seen anyone put anything more than 50lb for mono lines on a spinning reel... have no idea what the previous owner was using this for. I just want to ask: can I even cast long distances with line this thick? Also worrried about line capacity even for this massive reel. The line is actually in a very good condition. But should I swap it out for 40-50lb monofilament?
