  1. I think this idea gained some currency about 20 years ago when Steve Starling did an article for I believe Fishing World extolling the virtues of sweep for jewies.I read somewhere that they target them off the rocks in Victoria.
  2. Great result-I'm glad you and the boys had such a good day.
  3. Head up Pittwater Rd towards Church point- there are extensive flats along much of the way.We used to park near a boatshed just after you drive past a small hill with houses both sides.
  4. Mona Vale near he sailing club-you should be able to get plenty there.
  5. http://www.greenslips.com.au/ I check here for each vehicle each time-bugger sticking with one insurer,it pays to shop around.
  6. You don't mean the blowins at Terrigal on the weekends do you Whiting? Pick your school well and monitor your kids' peergroups as they grow up, the youth drug and alcohol problem is certainly just as prevalent here as anywhere else, and with high youth unemployment they will benefit from a good education and strong work ethic.Of course fishing and outdoor activity(plenty of top bushwalking choices) is a great grounding, anything that keeps them away from screens(fishfinders and GPS excepted) and bloody social media.
  7. Last time I checked it out it sure looked like every other murk, and smelt like it.And get in trouble there, you'll feel very lonely.
  8. Event is possibly the best of the next generation wp materials, expensive but breathes much better than goretex and really keeps the water out.I use Montane gear, there are other manufacturers using event too now.Outdoor shops like Backpacking Light http://www.backpackinglight.com.au/category27_1.htm are a local source but the best deals are often overseas.
  9. For what you want, I think the green Ryobi lithium range will be fine.I use my tools for home maintenance and reno, amateur wooden boatbuilding, and the odd handyman job for work and don't see the sense in spending excessively on trade quality gear.I replaced a $400 deWalt cordless drill/driver with the new Ryobi when it crapped out within 2 years. The lithium technology is a big improvement in power and charge life, and with the interchangeability within the range offers great value for money for what it is.If you were after gear for daily use I'd go along with the other advice above-I had a Hitachi sander that worked hard sanding boat hulls for years. Cheers, Dave.
  10. If he's not keen on drilling there is always the method used on timber boats-drill oversize holes, fill them with marine grade epoxy, and scew into the epoxy when it's cured. Cheers, Dave.
  11. I have never bothered with drags on 5 or 6" Alveys-palming them works fine once you get the hang of it,and saves a little maintenance. The direct feel is part of the fun for me,plus there are times off the rocks in particular when the ability to lock up fast and fight on line stretch are useful. Each to their own of course, and don't forget to buy swivels. Cheers, Dave.
  12. Try running a property maintenance business in this weather-lawns need doing again a few days after we leave, which nobody will pay for of course, and you spend all day dripping wet from either the showers or the humidity.Must be a nightmare for brickies and concretors. Cheers, Dave.
  13. I also have a Magbream extended to 13' with a lowmount winch-I use it for luderick fishing with an old Avon, and for general light rock and beach with a 6" Alvey loaded wth 12lb mono.My biggest salmon was landed on this outfit also,so it's pretty versatile.I have a 4120G for spinning, with a Stradic 8000 and 14lb braid-I can use either outfit for hours without fatigue.I have heavier outfits but rarely use them these days.
  14. Longest lasting option is 2 coats of marine epoxy-WEST System.Epicraft,Botecote.etc. brushed on all surfaces, especially saturating the endgrain.Polyester is a bit cheaper but doesn't adhere nearly as well as epoxy-experienced timber boatbuilders use epoxy for this sort of application.Epoxy isn't UV stable but your carpet will protect it. Cheers, Dave.
  15. I've been using a magbream based rod extended to 13' for years-great on blackies but also good for light beach fishing-caught my biggest salmon on it.
  16. I'll also be interested to see the replies to this Jewgaffer-I'm in a similar situation,I have a 115hp Merc 2 stroke with i/2 a tank of year old fuel due to illness that turned out to be bowel cancer, since removed, and despite mop-up chemo I'm feeling the enthusiasm returning, but have the same concerns about running the old fuel. It's terrific to see you posting again,I hope you're up and about as soon as possible. Cheers, Dave.
  17. Thanks fellas, have a shiny new Pfleuger Medallist 6'6 1-3kg and a Soron STX10 to play with, and plans for this:
  18. They don't treat marine ply to make it waterproof-whoever told you that needs to do some research. The glue and grade of timber used are what make it marine.Boatbuilders, including me, go to a great deal of trouble to encapsulate vessels constructed of marine ply in at least 2 full coats of marine grade epoxy, and usually more if adding fabrics like glass or dynel,to make them waterproof, before applying undercoats, paint or varnish. It's ok to use good exterior ply for non-structural jobs but I wouldn't use it in a hull.
  19. Bunnings has cheap marine at the moment so I'd suggest using that,in 12 mm.I'd use something like 300gsm woven cloth, but similar mat would do,it's just a bit messier to work with.Epoxy resin is the stuff to use, polyester doesn't adhere to ply anywhere near as well. This link has everything you need to know about using it: http://www.westsystem.com.au/west_system/basic_techniques Don't forget to fillet your joins with thickened epoxy before glassing, fibreglass doesn't bend around 90 degrees very well. It's all in the link. Cheers, Dave.
  20. I pay under $500 with Club for $27000 cover on my 18' Coxcraft.Sounds like they're worth a quote.

    Boat License

Great result Rex,even though it has taken a disgraceful 9 months to achieve what is part of your birthright as an Australian.NSW public service culture heeds a bomb under it,maybe things will improve next year(but I doubt it).Anyway,at least you can put the rubbish behind you now and enjoy your fishing.Congratulations mate. Cheers, Dave.
  22. There's an excellent ramp about 2 minutes away at Pretty Beach, you actually drive past it on the way to Putty. Cheers, Dave.
  23. Done.Come on raiders,it only takes a few minutes, you only need to add a sentence -angler safety and local negative economic impact should be strong arguments for our case.
