  1. Great report. Hopefully all those little jewies will be left to grow so we have lots of BIG jewies in a few years.
  2. Yum !! a few flatty fillets there. Quick question... How to you tell "spikies" from a small flathead of any other species?
  3. Thanks for this. Going to JB next week and was wondering whether or not to take the boat. Think I will now.
  4. Thanks for the report Pickles. Hoping to get out there soon.
  5. Had a pleasant day fishing in Cowan Creek yesterday. I still can't "crack" this system but had some results yesterday. The undersize Jewie pictured, bitten off at the boat by a huge tailor, 1 just undersize reddie 1 garfish in the shallows and a single squid which was eaten by a nice 45cm "roughly) flattie. Still need lots of practice.
  6. Well done. You guys would have stretched arms by the end of that session. Off the rocks too.
  7. I've heard from several sources that they make great bait for some saltwater fish e.g slimy mackeral. It's something to do with the fact that they are so oily and smelly.
  8. When I said "clean" I was talking about how muddy/murky it was after all the rain. Sorry, I should have made that clearer. Thanks again for the report.
  9. Thanks for the report. I have been wondering if the Harbour is clean enough for a fishing trip or whether it is more like chocolate milk after this rain. If you got tailor then I'm guessing it's not too bad. Regarding the flathead, I usually get a few between Grotto Point and The rudie Nudie beach but they do seem to come and go a fair bit. Sometimes I will get a feed of them and flounder other times zilch. I have never caught a flathead further in towards the main part of Balmoral. Hope this helps.
  10. Cook for one minute!!! Don't do what I did the first time and cook them for 15 to 20 thinking "nah not eating raw squid". Rubber bands are hard to digest and chew ha ha .
  11. I also had a dreadful day yesterday. Car Park at Tunks park full by about 5;45 am. Idiots pushing in. "washing machine" fishing for squid. Not takers. Yakkas non existent. Lost a small Bonito next to the boat at about 7am. Friend caught 1 undersized Kingie on a jig and I had one very half hearted follow on a slap stix. Saving the day (if I could even call it that) was a just legal flounder (entree for lunch) and a just legal trevally (sashimi entree last night). Oh well ! I guess we have to take the bad with the good. To rub salt into our wounds there was a bunch of guys, who just got off a charter boat, cleaning a bunch of 80cm Kingies.
  12. Would a "Mag Bream" do the job? There are 2 lengths available. Maybe slightly heavier line rating to your old rod. 3 - 6 kg think. If not you might HAVE To (ha ha ) replace your old rod with 2 new rods. A mag bream plus an ultra light 2-3 kg 9 foot stick. Not sure if they make "CR 108 XLs" any more. Good luck.
  13. Sounds like you had a good day out there. Might try for some bonnies soon myself. Pity about the idiots. What can you do ? I suppose we just have to take the good with the bad.
  14. I did the Balmoral drift last week and also got flounder and the odd undersized flathead. Glad to hear there are some Bonnies around.
  15. Great report and nice Jewie. Sounds like a great spot to get away from it all.
  16. Great post. Good to see the big girl swim away to make 1000s more little flatties.
  17. Well done and thanks for he info. I have been wondering if the harbour had cleaned up after the recent floods.
  18. Well done ! I haven't caught a Kingy yet. I'm always in the wrong place at the right time or right place at the wrong time. Got an Amberjack this time last year though.
  19. I hate to say i told you so but i would have scooped up the crabs too. i have caught a few in a prawning net and they haven't damaged the net. One did however put a groove in the brass tap at the kitchen sink and of coarse scrape off the chrome in the process. The same crab also grabbed my step brother's finger and squeezed until he was white in the face. (My step brother not the crab). Garries ! Everything eats them including humans. Thanks for the "write up".
