  1. Dog food, those round logs you get work well too. And don't smell as much as cat food !
  2. I've been dusted on 80lb gear too.... Spheros for sure.
  3. 80lb for extra abrasion resistance. I've had 50lb run through rocks and survived, other times busted off easily, so prefer the slightly thicker line for extra piece of mind. Leader varies from 80 to 100 lb. I'm land based so fish heavier gear, but use the same off the boat when out as casting towards shore or down rigging through drop offs. Have been drilled on heavy gear but prefer to not get avoidable bust offs and leave fish swimming with hooks and lines attached. You don't need as much capacity bless jigging so 80 works well. I use 50lb for spinning with on lighter combos. There is a limit to how much drag you can managed off the rocks, so it's not based on just drag ratings of lines.
  4. Spheros 14000 and 80 lb braid and matched to a suitable rod will be perfect.
  5. Could have been a ray as plenty around there.
  6. The more people put up the names of spots, the more crowded it will get ! And the newbies that turn up don't always have manners or are considerate.
  7. They are mack tuna. Large schools have been around for the past month off the rocks. The three back spots give them away.
  8. Plenty of bonnies around at the moment. Great fun on bream gear off the rocks as well.....
  9. Same legal ramifications as putting up maps and details of how to get into the worst fishing spots along the coast in sydney. Putting spots up is the same as discussing safety in this thread. There seems to be a misconception that all members are cluey as to how to rock fish, but how many members of this site actually post here, or just read to find out where locations are and go there to fish with no prior experience on the rocks? Re lifejackets - if its rough enough to warrent when fishing landbased, you shouldnt be fishing that spot. They give some people a false sense of security . Jacket or not you can still drown. Any modelling that can be read 'in conjunction' with actual marine conditions helps.
  10. No need for wire on kings at all. I dont use wire on tailor or bonito either and they have decent teeth (for sydney fish anyway). Dont know why it bent, locked up when fishing for kings after a hookup. Not sure if faulty or servicing issue. If casting braid , the deep spool is not good either, but will work fine with mono. I swapped mine for a spheros and it hasnt missed a beat. Mine was a 850ssm, I much prefer the old model. Spare spools for the penn are $90-110, and considering you can buy a new reel for $100 now or so for the 850ssm.
  11. And those reels arent super strong. Shaft bent on my one and not worth repairing.
  12. Why would you use wire trace for kingfish? Use a decent flurocarbon leader or penn 10x .
  13. Id go for your option 3...Option 2 will take the form of marine parks.
  14. Doesn't matter if you are wearing cleats or jackets, some spots are dodgy in certain conditions. And as if people are all going to follow the rules. I get idiots turning up to my local spot wearing thongs or crocs and jeans, while we are wearing rock spikes and light clothing. And then they wonder why we give them funny looks. 10 mins later they are on the butts after slipping. Pretty sure those people will never wear one. Life jackets don't help if you slip and crack your head on the rocks ! They might help in some places if you go in, but in some spots they will add to your problems.
  15. There are a number of reputable online sites to shop from, and I have never had an issue with fakes. On online shop there are a few, but again, find the ones with the best reputation. The other issue is that local shops dont stock anywhere near the range of lures/gear that you can get from o/s.
  16. Some local shops are very competitive, and others a down right rip off. I purchase from my local, and o/s sites for gear that isnt available in australia. And believe me, there is a lot of different lures etc that we dont get here at all. Nothing wrong with buying from o/s .
  17. I use the Inox you get from tackle shops in a spray can, or I use Lanox as well. Both work well, I just ensure I dont spray braided line.
  18. Yep, keep posting up spots and that's what happens. Wont be long before other spots are shut down because of idiots or the mess left behind along the coast....Certain groups love hearing about garbage left behind on the rocks to use as an excuse to lock up a spot, and councils get sick of complaints from rate payers - stay tuned for more lock outs.

    unstick rod

Wrap ice around the joint and let it cool down , then twist slowly and pull apart.
  20. Dont wait for another Exmouth trip to use them..I picked up those lures to use off the rocks around here for kings too.....
  21. You could use a baitcaster....I take that out for some fun and it works off the rocks.
  22. ho hum, and people still think its about trying to keep spots secret. No such thing along Sydney coastline.
  23. Its not that they are secret spots, or about eltist rockfisherman, but it obvious from many posts that the first thing a number of people ask is "where was that caught". There is litte interest in the gear used, the conidtions fished, its about the catch, and people just want to know where. That is the behaviour of someone that lacks the knowledge and experience. All for teaching people, but sending those with little experience, or those whom think they have experience to dangerous spots is not responsible behaviour. There are other spots to learn at which are less risky. Yes, we dont want to be a nanny state, but thats why the govt is looking at mandating lifejackets for rockfisho's. Life is full of risks as you say. I agree, and I take many, but then you should elaborate on the post and give what conditions those spots are unfishable in. A high tide and some swell at one of those spots has been the downfall of many. And we all know that people are not responsible hence, and in over excitement get into trouble. We should post then what to do if you go in ? How many people know what to do if they see someone go in ? Do they know where angel rings are ? Do they carry something that they can throw in ? If websites are to promote a sport, then it needs to be a balanced view. I would say a lot have no exit strategy if they get into trouble, nor what to do if got washed in, nor carry a first aid kit.
  24. This is one reason why I am not a big fan of those spots being listed. http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/rock-fisherman-missing-in-heavy-seas-off-maroubra-20110913-1k6qx.html
  25. Cheers for the clean up. I will try to keep my opinion out as to posting locations like this up, but want to make it clear to newbies trying to go rockfishing - a small climb down, a bit of rope, wear cleats etc...is a misrepresentation as to how easy or safe these spots are. I have seen half a dozen people get barreled and sent flying along the rocks from waves on what appeared to be 'reasonable conditions' in a couple of the spots mentioned , and other accidents where people have fallen trying to climb in/down cliffs or over boulders , and I believe its misleading to post these locations up due to the dubious nature of some of them as per the below report extract. "The research identified eight problem rock fishing areas in NSW located at Jervis Bay, Port Kembla, Royal National Park, Cape Banks La Perouse, Little Bay, Manly, Avoca and Munmorah State Recreation Area. These eight areas represent 54% of the rock fishing fatalities in this study." http://www.safewaters.nsw.gov.au/assets/pdf/rockfishreport_sept03.pdf By all means, go learn, but pick your time and place and explore, and dont just go the most dangerous spots first.
