  1. Hi mate, Just got back from st georges basin only last week and got pretty lucky. I fish the basin once/twice a year and have always enjoyed it. I'm sure others probably know it much better and I have always left my boat at home, so can only give you land based options. I've fished it from a boat once or twice but frankly, I love the idea of grabbing a rod and bum bag carrying an assortment of plastics and HB.....and hitting the flats and weeds. When it gets colder I throw on some waders, that's it. Anyway, typically species encountered is bream, flatties, luderick, tailor and whiting. Prawns on a dark night are always fun, some for bait, rest for the pan. I generally fish out the front of palm beach.....most boats I see are drifting over weed belts or fishing near the inlet. Hope that helps, Niko
  2. Absolutely, Fished plastics off the beach for flatties many a time. Nothing especially big but some nice pan sized ones. Also the rocks on the right when you head towards Murrays.....not fished there myself but snorkel there alot and would definitely give it a go. I'm usually there with the kids and try to not fish too much...save that for the early morning and late arvo's. Seen some people getting squid off the breakwall at Murray beach boat ramp so that may be useful for the some fresh bait as well if your landbased. Don't need to overpack as 1 rod for placcies and/or one rod off the rocks/beach would be enough. Hope that helps, Niko
  3. It has a 70 Mercury...not sure of the year but should find out about that. The current motor is not the best and it also had a whale tail on it which I'm not a big fan of. Aim to put an 80hp on it if we end up picking it up. Thanks for all the info guys it really is useful finding out bits and pieces of older hulls I knonw little about.
  4. Wow.....here I was thinking that she was unique. I test drove her yesterday and the motor she has is clapped out...barely got her on a plane. She was pushing alot of water (like she was really front heavy) but I'm thinking when I get my motor on her she should be better. How did your fathers thing go? I'm thinking of putting in my 80hp yammie on it Niko
  5. Hi Huey, Sent PM re: engine details. Any help you can given me on the year/model of the engine would be great. Thanks Niko
  6. Thanks Huey for all your help. Funny thing is I've been trawling all over the net and haven't found anything that looks exactly like her. There a bunch of nautiglass out there but nothing quite like her. the seafarer has a similar design but don't have flat sides. Looks like she is one of a kind. Niko
  7. Hi Huey, Thanks for the info....as always a valuable source. I have a late 80's yammie that was reco a few years ago that is in good condition on my current boat which I will be putting onto this one if I buy it. Tested the transom and there was no flex at all in it but I will be giving it a thorough going over. Given your saying the nautiglass have a reputation I will have an even closer look. I was going to check the serial numbers as I want to put this motor on my boat and sell them off as a package...will let you know when I get it. My mate who owns this is a mechanic so he has taken care of it but it is looking a bit rough on the outside. The motor rocks a bit on the mounts so will need to get that sorted. Also he hasn't used her much in the last few years. She kicked over and had no noticable issues running but I will be taking her on the water to test. Also I've never been on a boat with such a deep v up front and want to see how she handles, particularly at rest in sloppy conditions. In relation to the spongy floors and transom....were they more susceptible to rot etc or just naturally like that (if that makes sense)? She is looking like a nice solid boat that would be great for inshore and some of the local reefs on a good day. Also...right now I'm looking under $4000 but I might get him drunk and then start talking about prices..... Thanks again everyone....any more info on her would be welcomed. Niko
  8. thanks for the suggestions so far....seems like I am getting somewhere. Niko
  9. Come one....come all.....cause I'll be buggered if I know. Looking to pick up a new hull and trailer, and I think I happened to find one. Plan on putting my motor on her and give her some TLC. However, I don't know who made the hull. Basics are - about 20-30 years old - 17 ft - small space up in front of the driver with an access for anchor - fairly high gunwales Their is a sticker on her saying "Navigator Hire Cruises PTY LTD" but am thinking this may be original owners of the boat rather than the make of the boat....but I have been wrong about many things my wife tells me so I could be wrong here. Anyway, she in original condition as far as I can tell and in pretty good nick. Any questions will try to answer and thanks for any attempts to enlighten me about a potential it. Thanks, Niko Hope the picks work
  10. Hi all, Just happened to run past a mate who may be selling his pretty cheap...good deep hull, 17 ft that it's really good nick...but I just know nothing about the make/brand. Any info would be appreciated before I jump in. Thanks in advance, Niko
  11. Josh....... I've heard there a boats out there that simply don't catch fish. If it is only your third time out sure you don't have one??? No bananas on the boat? Short of that what can you bloody do other than keep a diary and compare notes from similar conditions. I find rain significantly affects fishing as some species react differently to this, particularly those who are near the surface. Good luck next time
  12. Hi JFISH, IF you can give a price range for rod/reel you are likely to get some great ideas as you are probably going to need a 12ft + rod and reel capable of holding alot of 6-8kg+ line - add jewies into that mix and it is likely to be heavier. Also, do you prefer overhead or spin reel as you would want to reasonably long distance casts. There are lots more questions but that is a good start. Look forward to seeing some responses if you can narrow down the hunt a bit.
  13. Hi all, Was wondering if anyone could give me there thoughts about this: Was fishing for jewies last week. Positioned myself up current of a pretty big point. I was fishing pretty close to the edge as the bottom drops quickly. As a result of this and other factors I was positioned in an eddy when it started to run. Now in terms of theory there are some positives and negatives. Was wondering if anyone had experience/thoughts about this. thanks
  14. Here I was bloody using the pillie to try to catch squid so I can catch a king. I must stop making life so complicated. With a few squid in the tank all we got were two eels and a few other reef fish and a blue swimmer......bloody first time I caught eels in the harbour and hopefully the last. The way it was slowly mouthing the strip I was praying for a jewie. In regard to rigs.......there are numerous ones...check in previous posts and there will be lots of info.
  15. great work aunty, the fact that you caught it on a lure a least makes up for the size...... I don't fish up there but if you don't get any responses hit the local tackle shop. Given you have a boat you'll have to work out what your fishing preference is as Newcastle has a whole host of fishing opportunities... good luck
