Fished tonight 17/03/10, from 5pm to 10pm...From 5pm to sunset, used a patenoster rig to fish for bream on the bottom. After sunset had the float and pillies ready for the tailor... But they never came....only saw 1 tailor and 2 or so bream being caught. The only fish i hooked was a yellowtail, foul hooked on the shoulder...it was as if it was asking me to live bait it =] What a disappointing night, thats fishing for you! Justin

Ok lets see if you guys can understand what im trying to explain without a pic =\ My reel is a daiwa tierra 2000 spinning reel. This is my first time giving it a complete strip down and clean. This is the dilemma. Iv gotten to the stage where i need to take the shaft out, theres a casing which is screwed ontop of the reel that prevents the shaft from being taken out. The problem is i cant unscrew it! The screws are small and sturdy as well as being tightened to an extent that its impossible to manually unscrew them. Any insight to this matter? Justin

Well, i finished uni at 11am from Newcastle and was driving down to sydney. 1/1/2 hours...during that time i had the urge to go fishing. I knew there was a storm coming...i just wondering if i could beat it and fish for a few hours. Got home at about 1pm..unloaded everything and set off to narrabeen lakes. WELL! on the radio i hear...storm front and heavy showers approaching the northern beaches. NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! i was about 30min away from home and almost there. It starts sprinkling....and when i arrive its a drizzle. Parked and quickling ran out of the car, rigged a plastic...and walked out onto the water. And you know what, it starts to pour, and theres in lighting and thunder in the distance. Anyway, 3rd cast, felt the taps and hooked onto something that fought like weed. It didnt seem to want to fight and i easily glided it towards me and slid it up onto the bank. It was a small flattie....was contemplating in keeping it and into the keeper net it went. Had a few more casts...and i was well and truly drenched! Back to home i went! with a 37cm flattie about to be cooked up in the oven now, at least i scored one dish for tonight. Bummer i couldnt fish for longer. Justin

The thing is the tank has a airstone running within it..which means the water would be displaced because of the air. Hows the water meant to get back in? =\ As for the awowana, impressive but its probably something i wouldnt do =] crickets and meal worms and small fish would be the extent for me. However it probably is one of it's natural prey...in the wild. Too bad you cant import them into australia. Justin

Penn applause is a good reel for the money and the amount of bearings it has... Smooth and hardy! I have 2 in 2000, loaded with 4kg monofilament. Perfect for my bait fishing trips. Wouldnt mind buying a few more if i need them. Something you can get them below 100$ Justin

I guess feeling the bite isnt a particularly a big thing, cuz when theyve swallowed it...you know they're there and it will try to reef you. Its just the power and leverage over the fish. I guess the use of braid wouldnt matter since most of the time you're going to skull drag the fish out of its home. You just have to make sure you give plenty of time for them to swallow it or you'll end up ripping its rubberly lips in the fight..(thats something hard to do..). You also have to think about chaffing on the rocks! Thanks guys, i might actually consider using braid. Currently have a daiwa black and gold spinning reels in both sizes. Do you guys have any idea how braid would go on those reels? Cheers, Justin

Yep, i 2nd the longtom and the doctor (parasite). You see the longtoms cruising the flats at narrabeen, iv even hooked one on weed whiling fishing for blackfish =] He must of been hungry. Justin

Iv been using platypus platinum monofilament, mostly bottom bashing off the rocks. I find that it has really high stretch and somehow it takes away the sensation of bites. In some situations it is great (off the beach) but off the rocks somehow i feel it gives the fish too much leeway. I dont particularly want to use braid either... Can anyone recommend something that will fit into this category? Looking for something wiht a breaking strain of around 60lb. Hopefully i can catch one of these bigger brutes in the ocean. In case you were wondering, ill probably be releasing anything blue =] Cheers, Justin

Guppies will be pretty much free considering how many babies they will make in return. You could probably talk to your LFS and get their 'bad quality stock'-(the blander ones). Im sure you know the difference between the males and females =]. You could always consider a tank in the garage with a small canister or hang-on filters if you're worried about them dieing in winter. its very low maintenance and a good investment for your barra. One more thing to think about is if you're going to frequently collect/buy fish you may introduce bugs which my kill your barra, its so easy to introduce new things into your tank. Justin

Iv been using a few live yellowtails and often they are taken by squid and occys. Last time i tried, in 3m of water there was too much current for sizes 1.5-2.5 to go down to the bottom. So i attached a small sinker to the nose of the squid jig. (I then managed a small cuttle) Is that the right approach? because it does wreak the action of the jig. I guess i could also use yellowtail and mullet as bait to attach to the squid prongs, just a final question on this. Do you let this settle onto the ground? or is it meant to stay mid water? under a float? Cant wait to nail a few calamari for dinner =] Justin

Not that i game fish, so im not sure if my comment would be valid...But i find this pretty similar to global warming. In the end no one wants to budge and disadvantage themselves. Someone needs to act first before the rest follow suit. What are we willing to sacrifice for these 'endangered' species. Hopefully this will be nice and fare =] Justin

Fresh squid from the markets cost >$30+, I would go catch my own live bait =D. Plus you get to eat your own bait if you want to. Justin

Last time i crabbed in hawkesbury with 5 witches hats and a cage...came back with 3 witches hats...Why? I was watching them..........and they bloody just drove over it and cut the lines. They were placed evenly on the side of the small bay. Close to the rocks but not too close. Lucky the day was saved by 4 big male blueys =D Justin

Just wondering, if you just used a hook+sinker+large fresh bait. Wouldnt that give you a chance snare a fish/most likely a ray...as well as crabs? Justin
