  1. Had 2 hours yesterday  did a trip down to the river and found a partially protected spot. After 40 mins converted first down into a 37 cm fish. Over next hour landed two more, lost a couple and missed a couple of downs. Last couple of trips have only produced dozens of baby fish. Pleasd with 3 fish 35 to 37 cm in the windy conditions.

  2. Hi Geoff

Nice fish I went and collected a bit of weed on thurs might have a luderick fish during the week.

I was up at South West Rocks Anzac week  caught some blackfish in mid 30's in the creek, not a lot but they were ocean fish coming in nice light colour (almost white) and really fat.

    Bruce.

  3. Good catch in the dirty water, just shows you have to try the deeper water sometimes.
Nice to know the blue spots are still out in 40 m . Might be a good target on Thursday for lunch on Good Friday.

    Top effort Bruce!
a good feed and great to hear the river is producing numbers!

I was surprised how well the river is fishing the hacking because it is normally so clear you have to fish early morning or late afternoon. As the water is brown the fish seem to be feeding all day once you find them.

another good catch of quality fish - you’ve been getting a few lately. 👍

I’ve been able to get out a bit more lately and the fish have co operated, also gone back to bread and butter bait fishing.

  7. Excellent result, plenty of eating fish and fish for bait. Looked for a report from you yesterday but you went today. Had other things happening today and thinking of a short trip in the morning will see what the weather is in the morning.

  8. 20220403_154812.thumb.jpg.f10772d51439495aa391e928da4b7ff9.jpgHeaded out with two grandsons from grays point ramp this morning, no early start got to the ramp at 8:30 only about a dozen trailors in the car point.

Went down towards lilli pilli baths fished in 3 spots all 10-12 m of water. Heaps of small readies worked our way thru them and end up with 5  between 30 & 35 cm. Also got 2 throwback Jews low 50’s. a nice bream a flathead low 60’s and kept a gurnard. Used salted fish strips for bait, pilchards were getting eaten by the small fish.

Had a nice day on the water and back at the ramp at 1:30 with a nice feed of fish.

Caught a Jew but not big enough. Left the ramp at 730 and back at the ramp 1030am just as the wind was picking up. Used lightly weighted salted fish baits and yellow tail fillets. Kept a couple of fish for a meal.

Those comments about them dancing on the surface reminded me of the queenies up north and both are great sport on light tackle.

Have you got a Weipa trip planned for this year?

    cheers

    Fil

There is a difference I have never lost a dollie to a shark, I’ve lost count of the queenies the sharks have eaten.

Heading up for the second week of July school holidays, see if the grandsons can catch a fish or two.

Great catch mate. I am still trying to nail a keeper this year after a million micros! Time to get back out there!

I was lucky first dollie trip for a year and I struck it lucky. Must admit I was a bit concerned when first couple were throwbacks and no visible signs of fish, but there were a few legal around and the smaller ones disappeared.

Top effort there some fine Dollies all so top report

They were good to catch you forget how hard they go. Hope to find some the next size up next trip, just got to get the right day I like comfortable conditions.

Brilliant effort Bruce - light tackle produces the goods, exciting see Dollie’s dancing once they know they’re  hooked.

A couple of times I had them jumping and dancing 50-60 m from the boat it is little awkward (but thrilling) to control and chase them when your in the boat on your own.

Next trip I’ll have to get the fly rod out and maybe even the 2 kg outfit.

Nice bag of fish there Bruce.

I have just returned from a van trip to Victoria, so will be fishing again soon.

The other week we had a couple of days of reasonable weather and no report from you, next good day I went out and you weren’t there. Then you posted you were away, what a relief I thought you had given up fishing.

Yes quite pleased with dollies, it doesn’t seem as far out to FAD when you catch fish. Looking at weather forecast I think I’ll appreciate having the canopy on my boat. See you out there.

    Some good fish there 👍

Looks like the lighter gear did the job - bet it was more fun too!

Lovely feed mate, well done. A bit of light gear would've made for some awesome fights👍

The light outfits are great fun and still produced a good feed, I did have a 10 kg outfit with me in case I ran into some larger fish

Well done Bruce.   The little livies and fishing light produced the goods

I pick out the larger baits and use them first then as the bait size goes down use lighter outfits. There were not many fish at the FAD, I think maybe  because there was no current at all, just a wind powered drift. Got most fish about 70 m from the FAD  slow trolling.

  15. 20220323_192256.thumb.jpg.315e6fb3da031a93186186a33fe22e9c.jpgThe weather Tuesday morning looked okay for an offshore trip. Launched the boat at 630 am and arrived at the FAD a bit after 8 am with 12 livies on board. First two casts produced 2 throwbacks next fish a legal so in the ice it went , then another throwback.
After that each bait produced legal fish, final tally 3 in low 60’s, 3 mid 60’s and 3 in low 70’s. Stopped fishing bit after 10 am and headed back to shore. There were 3 boats at the FAD I only saw 1 other fish caught, they had larger live baits and fishing heavier tackle. I started off fishing 6 Kg then went down to 4 Kg and finally a 3 Kg outfit, fished 20 lb trace, all unweighted with reel in freespool so they could make a good run. Baits were candy size 12-15 cms. 12 baits landed 12 fish kept 9.

This was only my second solo offshore in 6 months and I was very pleased with the result. My sons and families have fresh fish and I ended up with 4 fish.

    Thanks       Bruce

  16. 20220314_212835.thumb.jpg.f1cc345a68ab5ec1d959d26c4ca29622.jpgHeaded out from Grays Point ramp yesterday morning went out off Jibbon looking for some flathead. Had a troll around the Bonnie on the way, no interest from the fish. Started drifting in 25 m of water and worked my way out finding a few legal fish when I reached the 40 m mark. Kept 5 fish 35-42 cm . The south easterly freshened up just after 9 am and the wind fighting with a strong southbound current made me head back into the river.

Water in the river is still very dirty, anchored in about 15 m of water out from Lilli Pilli baths after about 30 mins a few slimies, yellowtail and pilchards turned up. Didn’t take much longer for a few kings to show up ended up landing 10 biggest 64.5 cm , have to try and catch that again next week when it’s bigger.

Kept a legal reddie and some slimies etc for bait. Only had one shower of rain and the canopy kept me dry. Very few boats out.

Not an exciting report but at least I got out for a fish and had fun with the kings.

A great day out Kobi, plenty of fish to catch. Hopefully grandpa caught some as well.

Grandpa did catch his share although I had a day where I lost more than normal. Lost a few round the anchor rope, had a hook break ( think it must have been in the corner of the jaw), after fighting a fish I thought a king the 20lb leader was bitten thru and I pushed the drag to a dangerous level and busted a couple off on 2kg. Still managed 12 kings (throwbacks) and a couple of tailor. Had a great day with a good crew.
