  1. Back creek has about minus 20cm of water at low tide only vessels that can get out of back creek are jet skis. Main river bar is pumping and not very safe today. The gaol ramp is open but not much water at low tide. I'll be going out the river tomorrow. Bruce
  2. When you posted this I was already in bed asleep so didn't see it until last night. My son has posted a report from yesterday. I only have a 5 1/2 met tinnie so the canyons are almost out of reach. I believe there could be couple of private fads out there but haven't been lucky enough to find them yet. Any private pm would stay private. Bruce
  3. Normally only keep 4 or 5 each. The next door neighbour gets one a little compensation for early morning trips when noise just happens and a thankyou for bringing the bins in etc when we are away. Plus two sons with there own families. We ice them down when caught, fillet and keep in a very cold fridge and can be eaten for a week fresh without freezing. We don't wash the fillets just keep them dry as possible then cover with plastic film. Bruce
  4. Hi Saw you anchored up in the deep early yesterday as we were going past on the way to the ocean. Hard to miss the tinnie with 2 coloured flashes along the side and someone fishing with handlines. Didn't come over as I thought I might spook the fish and ruin a hot bite (and the dollies were calling). I usually fish further over towards the baths at the bottom of the slope but it seems to be hit and miss this year. But you always manage a feed. Bruce
  5. Headed out today, plan was to head out to fads but the seas were not suitable. Fished in port hacking for a while for a flathead, 2 trevs and 4 blue swimmers plus a 60cm king (released). Then went out off the bommie when the swell dropped a bit, trolled for a while for nil then had a drift for two flatties and 6 jackets, so ended up with a feed. I'll head out again in the morning and try again. Bruce
  6. It sounds like it might be busy out there tomorrow, I'll be heading out there as well from Port Hacking. Tried today but the seas were not suitable.
  7. Yes they are great fun (good eating too) and certainly love the livies. I'm trying to work out how I can get out there next week. Being onboard with a good group of guys is an extra bonus bruce
  8. Are you interested in fishing week days or weekends day or night. The more info you can give the more chances of getting an invite. Beach or rocks, boat estuary or bluewater or willing to give anything a try. Bruce
  9. Hi I use the sienna 2500 for 2kg fishing for bream whiting flathead etc. I then change the spool and use them with 15lb braid in Weipa for barra and general river creek/ fishing. We use them loaded with 4kg mono and catch dollies to 85cm easily. For the price I don't think you can go past them. Match them up with a 2-4 kg (my preference) or 3-5kg sonic pro rod. When using the heavier braid be careful of high sticking the rod. bruce
  10. Went out to the fad today chasing dollies. Collected live bait mixture of mullet, sweep and yellowtail. All worked well to produce heaps of dollies up to the high 80's. Took the fly rod ( 6/7 wt with floating line, 3kg tippet) out with me as I haven't caught one on fly before. After we had caught and released heaps plus kept some for a feed decided to give the fly a go. Got into a good position near the fad and started to strip the fly back in. Third strip hooked up and thought how easy is this. Took a few minutes to land, the fly was down in the gills with blood flowing so this was the smallest we kept for the day. Then decided to have another go, 45 min later still not another take. Put the fly rod away when one of those oceanic ghost jacket snipped the fly off. Fish measured 64cm, not bad for first on fly. Next time I'll use sinking line and might try a 2kg tippet. We tend to keep a couple of better fish and then keep fish that are bleeding badly or look like they may not survive. Bruce Some of the other dollies taken on bait.
  11. Congratulations that is a big effort especially on braid spin gear and alone. Bruce
  12. Even though the salmon weren't the target they would have kept the interest level up. I haven't seen a lot of bonnies this year either
  13. The weather today was not looking good so a trip in the boat for the grandsons was ruled out. Decision was made to fish at Bonnet Bay ramp as it was sheltered from the wind, easy to get to the car if it rained and there might be fish there. So we picked out which rod, which reel, which hook etc and finally left to go fishing. Weather gods smiled and it didn't rain for an hour just long enough for the boys to catch they're tea plus an assortment of toads. Got home via the hot chip shop just as it began to pour.
  14. Trip 1 Went out in the port on thurs for a social/picnic day with wife and our friends. I went at 7am so I could have a fish. Started out fishing deeper water came up with a rat king and a legal snapper on frozen squid. Then went up to mainbar and pumped some nippers, fished the flats for a while for one legal bream but no whiting. Back to the ramp to pick up the picnickers. Went to the sand spit at mainbar for a swim. Naturally had a fish. A nice flounder and a blue swimmer crab. Next stop was Jibbon beach for lunch and another swim. And a fish which resulted in a 35cm bream. Trip 2 sat A 7am start from grays point ramp went and fished the deeper water again, this time a squid and 2 amberjacks (45cm), then on to the flats pumped nippers then fished for whiting. No whiting but a 35cm bream and 3 good blue swimmers. There were a lot of whiting on a couple of flats but they were playing mummies and daddies and not interested in a live nipper in front of they're nose. Next trip will be on tues fish the deeper water then the flats and try to catch some of Yowie's whiting. bruce
  15. That's good bream and the drummer would have gone hard. The drummer and blackies start to congregate off the rocks now and respond to the bread burley over the next couple of months. Berley up well and fish bread baits about a meter under a bobby cork and you will get results.
  16. Well done Yowie You have caught a good haul for the Port or anywhere. I hope to fish the port on Thursday. Bruce
  17. Going on trip later this year and taking a car topper. (Gulf & Cape) Has anyone used a self loader? Any thoughts on what is best side loader or rear loader, pros and cons of different brands. 3.4m alum going on roof of Nissan Patrol. Thanks for your ideas. Bruce
  18. Yes the wind was blowing yesterday morning. We were ready to go out and chase dollies but we made the decision to go to work and take another day off when the weather gods are friendlier. Spending the day in the hacking was very tempting. The dollies have been great fun this year so will get out one day next week. You certainly caught some good squid and with all those squid the kings were probably ready to jump into the boat. See you out on the water sometime. bruce
  19. Nice feed Yowie The Hacking nearly always produces something, especially for you. The main thing is to fish real early (as you have demonstrated) or dusk but the wind is usually a problem late afternoon. If the dollies disappear or the weather gets bad I'll fish the Hacking again soon and try to catch up with you on the water just to say hello. Tuesday appears to be your most common day. Which is the day I usually go fishing. Yesterday I spent offshore and kept a feed of dollies. Keep the reports coming makes me keen to get back into the estuary. Bruce
  20. Where you pumped the nippers at Mainbar is a really good place to stay for a while and fish. Pumping the nippers stirs up the food in the sand and acts as berley with the rising tide. Next time try throwing unweighted nippers around the shallows where the nipper holes are. We use light outfits ( 1kg main line with 4lb fluorocarbon trace) and fish the flats for whiting, bream and flatties. We have landed flatties over 4kg up in the shallows. Bruce
  21. My grandsons are 2 1/2 and 4 1/2 they seem to be able to co-ordinate the rod lifting and handle winding from about 2. They actually have started fishing in ansa sportfishing comps, this means we can't touch the rod or line or help them once they hook the fish. They started on 2kg outfits the 4 1/2yo is now using 1 kg quite well and has won a couple of under 10 comps and a junior comp (under 16). Probably because not many fish were caught. I'm looking forward to a few years time when they can pull my anchor up.
  22. Nearly forgot As we left the dollies couldn't decide whether to have a troll or not. Still thinking about it about 400m away when a marlin freejumped in front of us tore across the surface leaving the water about a dozen times. Decision made. We trolled for about an hour for 1 striped tuna then headed back for Botany Bay. Bruce
  23. Been going out over the last few weeks chasing dollies and have gradually been increasing the size of my best fish. Target is to get one over the metre. Went from 70cm to 75cm to 81 cm to 85 cm last wed. Today I thought I had hit the mark, but the lie detector came up at 98cm, so I have to keep going out fishing. I did see a big one about 1.4m, followed up a rainbow runner I was using for live bait. There were plenty out there today but were not biting as well as they have other days. I think they prefer a good current to the south today the current was running to the north.
  24. I went fishing with my brother and grandpa today and caught my biggest ever fish. I think it is the biggest fish in the whole world and is as fast as a racing car. My brother caught 2 bream as well. We will have them for tea tomorrow. Caught on 2 kilo outfits on pilchard bait at the top of the tide in shallow water.
  25. There great fun and just keeping the ones that are bleeding bad or not looking to healthy you end up with a good feed. Many other boats out there? Hope you left a few out there. I'm heading out in the morning. Bruce
