  1. Hi Raiders, Me and the parthner are looking at going to Fiji in April and staying at Shangri La Fiji. Unfortunately its not a full fishing trip but I am tempted to bring a set of tackle to wet a line. I have heard that fishing from shore is not allowed any more. Is there any truth in that? If not suggestions to locations and tackle suggestions woould be greatly appreciated. I will also be keen on a fishing charter which I am sure I could convince the parthner to spend a day out on a trip with the possibility of some decent fish. Any suggestions on a decent charter which would not cost me an arm and a leg? All suggestions would be greatly appreciated. regards Darryl
  2. Good day folks, As a few of you guys already know I have been posted up to Ballina for the next few year for a project and will be heading up at the end of this week. Just wanted to drop a post to say a thank you to everyone on this forum for making my fishing time in Sydney fun and enjoyable. A big thank you to all the nice people I have met and had a chance to fish with. As for Ballina, I am also interested in meeting up with any one in the area or having some insight of the bream fishing around the area. So if any woul like to meet a poor asian bloke who struggles to catch fish most of the time, do drop me a pm and hopfully we can catch up. regards Darryl
  3. Good day folks, My Kayak has been storage for the past year and finally during the easter break I managed to take it out for a paddle. The only problem was that the sounder was not showing anything. The depth of the water keep showing zero while there was no showing of contours of the bottom. The sounder showed that the transducer was connected and when I did remove the transducer, the simulation came out perfectly. Any ideas on how to fix that or is this one of those times I shld just bin the unit and get another one for the yak. regards Darryl
  4. Good day folks, Me and the girlfirend is making a trip up to cairns for the Christmas break and being a fisho would love to do at least one fishing charter while up there. The only question is what kind of fishing would be the most productive then. Any advise this would be greatly appreciated. Do leave contacts on any good charters which you would reccommend too please. Thanks in advance regards Darryl
  5. Dun feel bad if it take 4-6 weeks mate. I send in my certate for a repair and it take a whole 2 months to get it back. The good thing is they only charged me delivery cost. I say send it back to daiwa at least you know you can blame them for a bad job. lol regards Darryl
  6. wow an exist 2508!! Someone must be making heaps. lol well done mate. They are indeed a great reel. I honestly dun think any of the tournament dealers will be able to help you as i believe they all send the daiwa reels back to get it serviced. Let me know how desperate you are gonna get and if need be I might be able to send it back to SG for you f you really want. regards DArryl
  7. Gd work Dan, I have been meaning to have a fish offthe breakwall these few days but have been bz. We really should catch up soon and have a fish. regards Darryl
  8. Nothing taste better than Stringray on a banana leaf with some onion and chilli and bbqed. Best testing fish on a bbq!!! regards Darryl
  9. I wounder who taught you all those ideas mario and aloosh. lol.... Listen to these two mate, Clifton was almost our 2nd home when the fishing was hot. Spent more time in clifton compared to uni. lo those were fun days regards Darryl
  10. Thanks Tony, I might pop over the shop when I head down to Sydney this wkend regards Darryl
  11. Thanks Jorg, What I am concern is if I am getting a custom rod for it with the same guide spacing or guide size or just the same rods I use with my smaller reels, the distance between the spool and the stripper guide might be too short and thus resulting in line slap or a clogging of line on the stripper guide. Physics will tell you that if that distance is inadequate then this would result in affecting the casting performance of the rod. I know many people whom have shimano 2500 reels and have no problem with it. However if one looks at the daiwa 2500 spools, they are a tad larger than the shimanos. Thus looking at the daiwa tourny rods which has a lager stripper guide might be the way to go. I am just being a pain in the butt and want something different.
  12. Good day all, Recently there has been a marked increase with breamers using larger size reels such as the 2500 sized reels. My question is would you guys still used the same guide configuration as the smaller reels such as the 1000, or 2000 size reels. The shimano 2500 size reels has a smaller spool diameter compared to the daiwa's 2500. The reason for this is because I recently bought a 2500 sized daiwa and am trying to figure out a rod to fit/ match the reel. The last thing I want is to get a rod with unsuitable configurations/ sizes and affects the benefits of a larger spool. regards DArryl
  13. Heaps of fish are great for sashimi mate, Gars, Kings, whiting, flathead, Live squid, yellowtails, silver trevors, bonnies watson bonnitos. try staying away from jewies and tailor as they taste terrible. Bleed the fish once landed and keep them in a ice slurry of salt water for a few mins to firm up the meat. Fillet and skin the fillets as u normally would. Remove all bones present and slice the meat paper thin. Take the bottle of soya sauce out of ur tackle box and pour some in a dish. For those who liek spicy squirt some wasabi in and mix. Dip and not soak the fish and enjoy!!! Best thing to do by the wharf after a gd days fishing. regards Darryl Ps: in the tropics- magrove jacks and queens are awesome for sashimi!!!
  14. Clifton is a great place to fish. When I was still in Sydney doing my degree I was there several times a wk when the Kings are about. You would probably see quite a few blokes there with fairly heavy gear and heavy sinkers. and that was what I used whn I first started there. Unfortunately my catch rate wasn't all that great then. Then I started using much lighter gear and my hit rates soared. I used to simply use my bream gear with 10lb leaders, a pea size running sinker and a size 2 hook. By simply cubing with pillies, I have hooked up bream, snapper, flatties, trevors, bonitos, watson bonitos, jewies and kings. No doubt you burst up a fair bit but trust me mate, you hook up heaps more than any one else on that wharf. A decent tight drag is a must with huge confidence in you gear. The minute the king hits and start running towards the pillions you will know what I am talking about. We had a method of getting those kings away from teh pillions but that a whole different ball game. You lose some and you win some. Burley is a must but never feed the fish. There will be times where you can see teh bonnies and kings follow your trail up. Exciting stuff. regards Darryl Ps: Bring / construct a long handed landing net if you wanna land fish regularly there. Lost too many just by being stupid.
  15. 10cm yakkas= gumy bears!!! Love them to bits. Mario, just do what we usually do to chase them. The only problem is that you dun have me and Ali catching them for u. lol Good luck. Let me know how u do and I might need o head down and have a visit sooner than later mate. Regards Darryl
  16. Well done on the salmon and ray Dan. Good to know you are doing well in my neck of the woods. How long will you be up this way ?? We shld meet up and have a catch up. regards Darryl
  17. Did I ever tell u guys I hate you both. lol good stuff and great timing too. Wait till Darryl goes away b4 all catching all those gd fish. Gd catch folks. Both u and ronald has done the long yards and have caught some really gd fish from that place. Well done. The next time i head down to sydney I better get you guys to bring me around and show me the ropes of how o catch fish. Havn't had a gd session for ages and probably forgotten how to fish by now. regards DArryl
  18. Up locking threads are great as it keeps the reel in the same position no matter what reel u are using. Again that's a preferrence option. As for burl cork. When I was building rods for myself, I used to use a fair bit of burl cork due to its nice texture and feel. However IMHO if u are trying to make an UL rod and trying to reduce the weight, the AAA cork is good enough. Burl cork does indeed add a bit of weight to the rod. This is due to the density of the cork. Something to think about. Currently I have a Loomis 782 IMX built up with Titan guides and I can\t stop reccommending these guides. For a fraction of the price of fuji guides, you get the quality and slick looks which TI-Sic guides give. Good stuff mate. Hopfully I have given some input which would be helpful. regards DArryl
  19. There are heaps of rays in narrabeen. I have hooked and landed rays on most trips which I used to fish the lake. I guess the best one which I have managed to land was a 10kilo monster on a metal spoon on a 2-4kg rod. lol Took us 2 hrs to land that thing. It was hilarious seeing to guys on a yak trying to get the ray into the boat. Great fun but not too keen on trying it again any time soon. The usual way which I seem to get them in the lake is to rig a live mullet on a runing sinker rig and cast them out into the sand patches. Leave some slack and let the mullet do its work. Although I am not targetting them but somehow they always seem to find the bait pretty quick. We also get heaps of other fish from bream, tailor, flatties, long toms and the other usual suspects. Good fun and the mullet fishing are heaps fun when using a real light pole to fish for them. Anyone who thinks that rays dun fight hasn't had one in full flight. Some of the rays which I have hooked take line faster then some of the kings I have hooked!!! Lol had a ray actually jump out of the water too which was really a sight to behold. Its all fun until they stick to the floor and then the hard work comes in. There are really some huge rays in the lake. Have seen some which would probably be the size and width of a decent table. So do be careful when wading in teh area. they are harmless unless attacked or stepped on. Since coming to australia, I have released every single ray which I have hooked. But here is a secret- They taste great!! In Singapore they are a great dish with so many ways to cook. The best way to eat them is to cut the wings and spread them on a banana leave and coat the wings with some chilli paste and wack it on a bbq. Fantastic dish folk!!. I know I know most of u guys would think I am mad to even suggest it but trust me have a try and U'll be a convert for life!!! Regards DArryl
  20. Hi Anthony, What u have said is music to my ears. And the snapper in ur avatar makes me a happy man. The job is a site engineer position in a project management job. Port is gonna have a new road and my company is gonna be in charge of the project. So I'll be up there for a year plus. We gotta try and meet up when i get up there. Will send u a pm soon when i know the dates. regards DArryl
  21. Hi all, After a spell of being jobless and broke of the last 3 months. I finally managed to snag myself not 1 but 3 job offers. Guess all I needed was to wait. Anyway I got a job offer which would see me being stationed in port macquarie for the next 65 wks. Now the 1st question that came to my mind when I found the location was how's the bream fishing up there. Anyone ard here has any idea?? Or better still anyone lives ard there and need a fishing mate[][]. Any info abt the fishing would be greatly appreciated. Gotta start planning b4 I have to make the long haul up north. regards DArryl
  22. Looks like the Singapore boys have been doing really well in the singapore front eh. Wish i had the luxury of going back. I totally miss the barra, groupers and freshwater fish avaliable. Good on you Ronald. You guys back already ?? time for us to get back to our regular shore bashes!!! regards Darryl
  23. Clifton garderns is one of the most consistent place i would think to get my stocks of livies. Just a little bit of berley and the nice gummy bear size yakkas goes crazy. Do try and get there b4 the sun comes up and there would be heaps for the well. regards DArryl
  24. Started fishing at 3 when i used to catch live bait for my dad in Singapore. Then the best gear i could be using was a bamboo pole with mono attached and a pc of foam as a float. We caught heaps then. Those were indeed fun times and probably the only time i could relate with my dad. Never looked back since then. So all up just 23 yrs. Still lots of learn and many more friends to make. regards Darryl
