  1. ha marlin!!!!Lets just chalk it up to being a big smelly eel or stingray, better to lose out on that than a kingie!
  2. Went out with a couple of mates yesterday for quick session at Clifton Gardens. Not much around caught a resonable leatherjacket but highlight of the day was seeing mates rod get pulled over the side. He had a peeled prawn on and forgot to loosen the drag, next thing you know the rod gets slammed and pulled up over the railings and into water. Before we could even think about jumping in after it it disappeared! Lucky it was only a cheap combo but what do you think took it with such force? I had a heavy duty rod set up with a whole pilchard and it didnt get touched so think my mate was unlucky it went for his rod. Has to be the one negative thing about fishing, losing a fish when all you want to know is what fish it was. Sure its not the first its happened so think its time to hire soem SCUBA gear and get a few new combos from under the wharf!!
  3. Thats the one I caught in opening post, ugly bugger with some serious weight to it, gets your hopes up of breaking your flatty PB for a sec aswel!!
  4. gday was fishing yesterday landbased botany bay(frenchmans bay) and a pod of dolphins appeared. About 5 of them along with a couple of babies, was pretty amazing. I had some pilcahrds out and after seeing the dolphins furiously reeled in my line just in case. Anyway bait was couple of metres away and saw the dolphin have a go at it, just missing!!!Was amazing to see the dolphin in full flight just a couple of metres away from the breakwall but cant help wondering what would have happened if I had hooked up. Had quite a heavy leader on so pretty glad I didnt for the dolphins and my rods sakeHas anyone ever hooked up to a dolphin??Also hooked a seagull diving for my floated pilchard, had to reel him in and release him, dont think he'll be going for my pilchard again anytime soon! 5. gday raiders Went for a quick fish at frenchmans bay yesterday and after netting a 52cm flattie on a pilchard I also got a huge catfish on a peeled prawn. This thing was atleast 45cm and like nothing I have seen before. I have caught many a catfish in the hawkesbury, small little thing with posinous spike, but this one was a lot bigger, was heavy as and had no such spike. Had a little look on the net and it says that they are native to murray-darling, is this true? Also said they are excellent eating which is a bummer, was to cautious of getting spiked by the thing and so chucked it back in. Sorry no photo, was pretty frantic on the breakwall!Any ideas if this is common capture or not? Georgieboy
  6. I went there this week and it is very slow and have to agree its very snaggy. There are puffer fish around picking your bait to pieces and they even decimated a few of my plastics. This was fishing from the breakwall out front of the sailing club but needless to say I wont be going back there again. Need to find another LB spot now, has anyone had any luck at frenchmans bay?
  7. hey guys Im going to be fishing around Brooklyn tonight with fish fillets or livies if i can get some. Was just wondering if you think i should be using a wire trace in case of hairtail, will this discourage a jewie?Jew is my target fish but i would b pretty annoyed if a hairtail bit me off. thanks Georgieboy
  8. Thanks for the pointers guys, think ill get a few of thsoe headlamps and bring some dolphin torches aswell......tryhard thats a good point, it was actually prob my main motivation for needing light, safety, we hire the tinnie, it comes with nav light but still wouldnt mind standing out a little more!!! none of us boys hav a boat licence, was just wondering are we allowed to anchor wherever we want at night time??shud we b stayin out of the middle of the channel etc etc, will most prob b around the bridges at brooklyn, should b ok if we got the light right??? thanx Georgieboy
  9. Gday raiders Am going on a night sesson this week, was just wonderin what you guys use in terms of lighting??We will be hiring a boat so was just curious as to whether you'd come across some good lantern type products or had your own "DIY setups" supplying light...have got a few torches and headlamps but would rather a bigger light that can be left on throughout the night to make things a little easier. Thanx guys georgieboy
  10. Thanx for that, dunno if i'll target them though, those teeth are a bit a decent Jewie will do me nicely hehe georgieboy
  11. Some great looking fish there mate Me and the boys are planning a nite trip this thurs setting off from brooklyn and will b stoked if we can get into teh jews and hairtail. Can i just ask what the hairtail was caught on, never caught one b4 and would love to and were u using ganged hooks/wire??we're going to try ang grab some livies b4 we head out, but fi not will prob have to fall back on old reliable squid. Congrats again on the catch Georgieboy
  12. yeh i know im eager my old man has no interest in fishing tho, so i don't reli hav anyone to teach me these things 10 rods sounds very impressive and i cant wait to see your article on the matter, will be a very good read im sure!!well all things going to plan should make it out on the water thurs nite, mite try in the faster flowing areas as u mentioned and i'll let u kno if i cath anythin besides the mandatory cattie and eel (my chinese friend's mum swears by eel, will take more than that 2 convince me tho!!!) Thanks again for your choice advice, really appreciate it tight lines georgieboy
  13. ahh ok, makes alot of sense, too bad the hire boats we use don't have rod holders Also sounds like i mite need to start updating the old equipment if i'm going to get serious!Thanx again for the info, was just wondering though for got 2 ask, when the tides are strong and ur fishing with 3 other blokes, whats teh best way 2 ensure that all your rigs don't basically get taken to the same spot by teh strong tide?just add more weight? because it seems very futile only having baits down in the one general area instead of 360 degrees around the boat. thanx again georgieboy
  14. Hey Jewgaffer Thanks for the great advice, doesnt take a genius to kno that you definetly know everythin there is to know about jewies!! I will try using some heavier lead in more exposed areas and hopefully see some results. Your advice about a tight drag seems pretty sound considering i lost what i think was jew a few weeks ago when something slammed my bait and my reel ended up bird nesting becuase my drag was on way 2 light. Having said that a few months ago i had the pleasure of seein my unsuspecting mate's rod get pulled from the boat only for the reel to catch on the side of the boat on teh way out and consequently bag a nice 3.5kg schoolie so i wont be puttin my drag on too tight , esp as us boys tend to get a bit distracted when things go quiet!! thanks again for the advice, much appreciated!!! georgieboy
