  1. I’m right-handed. Since I was about 12, after reading a lot of Dick Lewers, I have cast single-handed spin rods with my right hand and wound the threadline reel with my left. Double-handed spin rods, Alvey sidecasts and overhead reels, I wind with the right hand. With Alveys and overheads without a level wind (game reels, larger overheads), I need to guide the line on with my left hand, so I wind right handed. With a baitcaster with a pistol grip rod, I cast with my right hand, my thumb naturally drops down to feather the spool and control the line in the cast etc. but I switch hands after the lure hits the water (usually, this is bass fishing and I'm going to let the lure float on the surface for a little while), then I can hold the rod in my left hand, cupping the reel and tensioning the line with my left hand, if needed, as I wind. It’s horses for courses.
  2. Well, just a quick update. We had a wonderful time in Bali! I did not go fishing (so it was normal for me! 😂). In fact, we only went to the beach once, on our first day. We walked from our hotel about 600m to Legian Beach and down towards Kuta to check things out. We sat down for a Bintang and a Sprite and were instantly surrounded by locals offering massages, selling bracelets etc. One strange guy just sat with us with a little case on his lap looking at us and not saying a word. It was a bit weird. It was only when I asked what he had in his case that he started to talk and he said, “Silver jewellery”, that he talked a bit. When I said my skin reacts to metals other than gold, he didn’t say anything more and didn’t even open the case and he continued to sit there, looking at us. He didn’t worry us, though… but my wife got freaked out by the touchy feely ladies wanting to massage us and we finished our drinks and up and left! 😂 Sad, as we wanted to sit and watch the surfers… it was quite a long break. 🤷‍♂️ Anyway, we had a wonderful time, ate some amazing Balinese food, saw the barong/Kris dance and the kecak/fire dance I studied back in high school, drank kopi luwak (the “cat poo” coffee) and met some wonderful, amazingly friendly Balinese people. 😎 The closest I got to anything to do with fishing was a trip to the pasar pagi (morning market) where we saw fish for sale and watching some fishing boats heading out to a reef near Uluwatu while we watched the sunset as we waited for the kecak/fire dance at the “monkey” temple. I didn’t actually find any leads on a charter that I thought would suit me - they all seemed to be traditional fishing boats targeting fish for a feed. Still, there will be other trips, for sure… I expect to return to Bali many more times! When I get a chance, I’ll put some pics up in The Bar - I’ve just got to get them down to a smaller size. Bali bagus! PS. The 3 of us caught Covid-19 for the 2nd time over there. I didn’t even know I had it - thought it was allergies but did a negative RATest to be sure. My wife and son felt sick on the day we got home and we all tested positive, me only faintly, so I guess I passed it into them. 🤷‍♂️ We thought Ben and Yolanda had a case of Bali belly… on the last day, we went to the Hard Rock Cafe in Kuta - they had sliders and burgers and soft drinks (with ice for the first time). I had Balinese food and Bintang. (I only ate Balinese food - all the time). They got the runs, not me but the GP said it was probably Covid symptoms. Ben also had really bad pins and needles/numbness in his hands for at least 3 weeks. Very strange. We’ve been back 5 weeks now. Looking forward to our next trip but it looks like we’re going to Thailand first.
  3. Thanks Frank. Yeah, I was tempted to just sand the peeling areas, leaving the good paint and use putty spray on the bare areas but I think it will annoy me down track if I don’t strip it right back! So, I think I’ll strip it all back to bare metal. I’ll just lightly sand and spray the shaft, though. I’ll post photos when I’m (eventually) done… I don’t rush these things! 😂
  4. Thanks Frank, I just started having a look at this today. Should I take all the paint off, or just sand lightly where it’s in good condition? If I take it all off, should I just use paint stripper?… because where the paint is good, it doesn’t come off very easily. 🤷‍♂️
  5. I didn’t even know it was aluminium… thought it was steel! 🤷‍♂️ I was going to use a flap disc anyway. They’re much gentler.
  6. I generally only use snap swivels on my game fishing outfits to attach prerigged skirts with trace, or when tying on (snapping on?) pre-tied paternoster rigs when drifting for flathead or reef species offshore. Always good quality ball bearing swivels with snaps, e.g. Sampo.
  7. I’ve lost a good deal of paint from my Minn Kota (probably from hitting sand some years back) - photos attached. I want to sand it back and paint it (at least it’s something to do if I can’t go fishing 😂). Should I buy a special marine paint? Recommendations? TIA
  8. Good info, Jeff! Thanks. 🙏 I might be a chance for dusting the cobwebs off the gear on Friday (woo hoo!)… haven’t discussed it with the trouble and strife yet. 🤷‍♂️ 😂 Still not sure if my finger will stand up to holding a rod for long after the surgery. Keeping an eye on the weather.
  9. Really? I’m sure it’s full moon tomorrow, 14 July and 12 August. 🤷‍♂️ Am I reading the charts wrong? I haven’t sought any fishing charter leads from Facebook at all. I am focusing on eating lots of great Balinese food and absorbing the culture! Terima kasih atas bantuan Anda.
  10. Thanks Donna. Yes, you told me 1 or 2 days after the full moon. Full moon is 14 July and 12 August, so I’ll miss them, which is why I haven’t been too bothered. I plan to just enjoy the makanan 😋 and explore! 😎
  11. If you’re on Facebook, maybe join the Bali Travel Forum and ask there. Warning though: you’ll get a zillion replies and direct messages from drivers offering their services! Still lots of good info, though.
  12. I’ll be there in 2 weeks, staying in Legian. Haven’t really looked at charters yet. You might get a better shot a few days after the full moon. I’ll have the new moon.
  13. No, I’m going to Bali on an eating trip. Hoping to squeeze in a fishing trip! 😂
  14. Have you been talking to Dooley? He’s christened me Banana Baz! 😂 I actually managed 2 nice flathead on plastics near the lodge - the best fish of the charter. I’m still struggling to hold a rod with my casting hand (right) after my surgery. Should be able to manage trolling and holding the rod in my left hand and winding with my right. 🤷‍♂️ Still don’t know if I’m going to get a fishing trip in!
  15. That’s right, Donna! I am SO looking forward to it! We have spent the afternoon watching YouTube videos of the area we are staying. Recent videos showing how it is post Covid - it seems pretty quiet and still a lot of places closed but it looks like it’s picking up. We’re trying to find all the good places to eat - we love Indonesian (and all south East Asian) food and are really looking forward to meeting locals and soaking up the culture. 😎 I can’t believe it but my wife has already said, “Maybe we can look at retiring there, for a few years at least.” 😂
  16. I’m going to Bali in 3 weeks, for 10 days. I’ve done a bit of a search here but couldn’t find much info. Do any Raiders have any info on sportfishing and charters in Bali? I won’t be taking any gear with me, so it will need to be a charter. We’ll be staying in the Legian area. My first trip to Bali/Indonesia, despite studying Indonesian many years ago at high school and I’m really looking forward to it! Info on charters by PM please. TIA. Baz
  17. I assume by “secondary drag”, you mean you have the Liveliner version, which works like a Baitrunner (Shimano). If so, it’s not really a drag as such but a spool tension control for when you have it in Liveliner mode… effectively like free spool. Basically you set it with enough tension to hold your bait where you want it but so a fish can swim off with the bait and not feel undue pressure. To strike you’d flick it out of Liveliner mode by flicking the lever or winding the handle… then the regular “main drag” would kick in. If you’re trying it this way and it’s not applying enough tension to, say, hold your bait in the current, return it to your tackle store and get them to look at it. They’re a sealed system, so I wouldn’t be pulling it apart… you could void warranty as CampR indicated.
  18. Not long at all. They’re all sorted by size first, so all the 7 inch, then the 5 inch, then by colour, so I can see what I want straight away. I only have a few colours in each size. Offshore, I rarely fish smaller than 5 inch. I don’t use Gulp because of the leaks and the fact that they dry out and are useless then. I mainly use ZMan Jerk Shads but I do have some Squidgie patterns and some Halco Mad Eyes that a charter operator in WA gave me. Smaller plastics for inshore use on bream and flathead etc. would be in another container and I don’t worry about them offshore. 🤷‍♂️
  19. Is it?! 😂 I tend to lose quite a few when I go snapper fishing. @Scratchiewill probably tell you I lose them on the bottom mostly! 😂 I like to be prepared for anything, including rapid gear changes - always experimenting. I mostly fish solo, so I can pretty much carry as much as I want in my boat. I just like it organised and ready to hand. I just don’t understand why they’d make a 19 pouch wallet that really won’t take a pack of 3 or 4 plastics in each pouch! Go figure! 🤷‍♂️
  20. So, how do you all store your soft plastics, so that can carry as many in your boat as possible? It will probably be another couple of weeks before I can hold a fishing rod after hand surgery - at least for lure casting with a single handed rod - I might be able to handle a light beach rod and Alvey. So, in the meantime, I’m tidying up my gear and the boat. The zipper on one of my old tackle wallets I used for SPS seized up, so I bought a different model with 19 pockets in one compartment (10 on one side, 9 on the other), plus a plastic box for jig heads etc. in the other compartment. Thought I could combine 2 wallets into one. I’ve filled 10 pockets with my 7 inch ZMan Jerk Shads and other similar sized SPs (Squidgie paddle prawns etc.). I went to put the 5 inch and smaller plastics in the other 9 pockets and I won’t be able to fit them in - I can’t even close the compartment as it is! See photo attached. I haven’t even looked at the other old wallet with 3 inch grubs etc.! What does everybody else do? I do like to take as much as I can in the boat with me. 🤷‍♂️😂
  21. Great stuff, Jeff! You certainly get up there early! 😎 Gotta keep your eyes and ears open for whales. I watched some amazing breaches off One Mile yesterday. 🐋 Ive got a lot more time on my hands these days, as I’ve cut back my hours at work, so I might just message you to join me on a trip in my boat… as soon as my hand recovers from surgery and I can hold a rod. 😉
  22. The way I play, I need a bag that can also carry a shovel, rake and scuba equipment! 😂
  23. Thanks Donna! Like I said at the time, “No rush!” 😂 It’s not like I’ve been fishing much and I’ve just been browsing the forums to maintain my interest and I was reminded of my last trip (apart from a charter I took for the most expensive flathead fillets ever!). I had some hand surgery recently (trigger finger repair)… hope I can hold a fishing rod soon and get back out there, as I have plenty of time now. I can now hold a guitar pick and strum a few tunes with my band, so that’s a start. 🙏 😂
