  1. Yeah. The lake we were fishing in was full of a really thick green weed (so much so that after bringing the fish in it will usually be covered in the stuff), and as the lake doesn't open to the sea very often, I think the fish must have adapted and become this crazy green gold colour. The pics don't really show the colour much.
  2. Hi all, Got in a good few days fishing with a mate down at Bawley Point, past Ulladulla. We were down there to fish off the beach but the weather was not always our friend. But on almost his first cast of surf fishing, my mate pulled in this monster bream that was so close to 40cm I decided to give it to him, even though it was probably about 39.2cm! In reply, I managed to drag in a tarwhine that gave a pretty big fight, kept running back towards the rocks. It went around 35cm. The winds picked up the next few days and although we managed to pull in a few legal fish from the gutters in the morning, we had better luck in one of the little coastal lakes which sat in behind one of the beaches. The bream here were going nuts and we caught several which measured over 40cm. All in all, a great few days fishing and can't wait to get back down for whiting season. Cheers, yartz
  3. Hey mate, I was down there a couple of weeks ago and fished for about an hour without much luck, the water in the lake was pretty bloody cold. Tried a few different spots, the end of wimbledon avenue seemed to be the best one but it was a bit crowded. Also tried up near the opening to the lagoon but the tide was running in very fast and I couldn't get any of my SPs to stay down. Then the wind picked up and pretty much blew me home. But talking to a local, he did say a bloke pulled out a 16kg jewie from the lake about a month ago, so if the conditions are good, im sure you'll have a chance for something. Cheers, yartz
  4. thanks for the tips guys. I'm not going down there with the highest hopes but still itchin all the same! I'll be sure to post up a report no matter what the result, hopefully full of pics and big uns! Cheers, yartz
  5. Gday Raiders Been a while since my last trip out and seeing as I'll be down on the Northern Beaches tomorrow morning I thought I would have a crack in Narra lake with some bait and especially plastics tomorrow arvo. Has anyone had any luck down that way recently? Cheers, yartz
  6. Nice catch mate. Interested to know what plastics the whiting went for if you care to share..! Cheers
  7. I was at towlers a couple of weeks back on successive days for a donut! Right time right place, well done mate.
  8. Sorry if this report is a bit long but I tried to cram 3 days of fishing in! I got up to Wallis Lake (near Forster) last week, unfortunately for a funeral but I had a few days spare and used the time to wade into the lake and have a cast from my aunt's property up there. Day One Arvo saw me hitting an oyster lease. I was using a Berkley 3" minnow in pumpkinseed and a big bream hit it hard and smashed it straight into the lease and I lost the rig, lucky I hadn't gone for the SX40! Once the wind picked up, I abandoned the lease and hit a point to score only one 38cm flathead that I chucked back. Day Two I hit the lake right around midday. My hopes were low as I was fishing at relatively low tide in the middle of the day and in wind and rain that was driving straight into my face. But believe it or not I reeled in a few good flatties, all going at over 40cm. My reel had been playing up since the day before and seeing as I couldnt work the Gulp minnow as well as I would have liked I swapped to a 3" grub in watermelon, which has a tail which provides pretty nice action. This lure worked wonders for me. I was soon on a continuous run of flatties. Despite the weather, my old man came down to wet a line also and he used a squidgy fish in bright gold. At one stage we were going fish for fish and must have picked up at least 5 or 6 fish in the space of an hour, with the wind and rain pouring down. 8 hours later we had 6 keepers, a few found themselves on the Webber that night... Day three and I hit the water early in a yak to try my hand at some drifting. I found a nice channel that worked around a point and dragged into a bay. The drift was nice and steady, fast enough to avoid the wee on the bottom. Straight away and I had a few good hits and brought in two 50cm+ models. I found a likely spot and on my first cast hooked up a nice 36cm bream which had great fight in it. The trip produced around 30-40 flathead for me so I was stoked. But not all stories end perfectly. On two separate days I had absolute monsters hooked. The first one was pretty sizeable, at least 60cm I would guess, but I never set the hooks properly and it kicked off about ten metres away. The second fish would have been my biggest flatties ever. Having picked it up on a drift in the yak, i thought it was a huge snag but hang on, there was a head shake...HOLY S**T its a fish! After a real good fight I had it on the edge of the bank, having gotten out of the kayak after realising I didnt have a net. I fought the fish into the shallows and right to the edge of the lake, but there was a bit of a bank and when I went to pull the fish out, the line snapped under its weight and it fell right on the edge of the bank. The next moments were like an eternity as I got ready to lose some flesh picking the monster up. As I went to grab for it the fish kicked back into the water and lazily swam away... It would have been my first 70cm+ flattie so needless to say I was gutted, particularly without getting a photo and with the old man pissing himself from the house after watching the fight through binos. All in all though a brilliant trip with some great fish. Apologies for the photos, the missus had my camera so i had to resort to the phone. The fish are sitting on a washing machine that measured around 85cm across. My one bream!
  9. Sounds interesting mate I might have to give that a crack. What sort of popper do you generally use? Yartz
  10. About 20 minutes south of ulladulla at bawley point.
  11. Spent a few days earlier in the week down past Ulladulla and had a serious thirst for some beach fishing. Got down and conditions looked pretty perfect with high tide in the early morning and evening. Returned to a beach which has always produced good bags of bream and whiting and there was a pretty killer gutter that must have stretched for just under 100m along the beach. This photo isnt brilliant because its only taken at mid-tide so the gutter isnt quite in full swing but you can get the gist of it: Anyway, probably around four or five 3-4 hour sessions along this gutter using pippis, beach worms and lures only got me about 4 barely legal whiting, a few flatties and a few small salmon. I did get busted off by what I think was probably a monster bream but nothing to show for that... Still cant work out why such a good looking spot fished so poorly, but I'll be back for further investigation next week I reckon..!
  12. Getting back to the boat ramp was nightmare as I was going against the wind. I got very wet. All in all it was a good session and can't wait to get out there again. Bye for now Luke
  13. gday olitay fished one beach down last week, conditions were dead set perfect and a ganged pillie did the job for me, plenty of hits from the salmon and a few tailor and bream biters as well. find the gutters and you should have some luck cheers yartz
  14. you can also find gutters by looking for water where white wash sits around the outside...generally, the deeper water where the waves ARENT are those where the waves havent broken, so the white wash isnt around so much...if that makes sense but like the others said, look for the patches of darker water where the waves arent breaking, and where there is a bit of extra chop and that will generally be a gutter... when there is a decent bank, a decent gutter may also appear between the bank and the shore...the wave will break, then hit deeper water and reform before breaking again on the shore...cast into that sort of area and you will generally (hopefully) find fish feeding, especially at dawn and dusk as hodgey pointed out good luck! ps having a look at a beach at low tide may also provide some hints as to where the gutters will be at high tide... long live beach fishing cheers
