  1. Hey guys, asking the newbiest of questions about berley. There are thousands of threads about berley recipes and i'm pretty sure i know how to make a mix properly. The problem is that i don't know how to dispense it. I've tried to use it 3 or 4 times now but it always ends up smelly and unhelpful. I only fish off rocks and the shore (no beaches or jetties/wharves). How do I know where my berley trail is going? Will it be following the wave direction? If i'm berleying off the rocks how will the backwash affect it? I've sort've just assumed that the backwash just washes it out infront of me. So me, my berley and its trail are all in line. I assumed that would happen because the waves are always flowing past you (not into you or radiating out from you) so if the berley follow that only then my berley would just be clinging to rocks along where im fishing. My recipe is: 1. bread/quicks oats depending on what i can find 2. tuna oil 3. big w berley pellets 4. water I mix all that stuff up and pour it into a container and freeze it. Usually it gets 6 hours to freeze in my freezer but it never gets solid... Do i not have enough water inside??? I find it really difficult to berley consistently as i'm usually looking at the ocean or talking to my dad or something. That's why I want to make a frozen block of berley that'll slowly dispense inside a milk container where i poke a few holes. I've tried using it when it's unfrozen and the mix seems to be gone in 10 minutes even though i spend 20 making the damn thing! And no noticeable difference probably because its gone so quick. So not only do I not know how to identify where my berley has gone... i cant even get mine to last. How tragic is that? I've also tried to just tie a salmon carcass to the rocks right in front of me. That lasted.. but didnt seem to do anything. Thanks for any help
  2. wow thats awesome. Too bad i'll never go that far down to balmain, sounds like a nice place. Happy fishing next time
  3. maybe oci, or maybe it just rubbed me off on rocks. Pretty sure it was something alive and with tentacles. I could feel the pump they give when they're squirting water out of their mantles to try and flee. Still hurting over that one.

  5. damn bad luck How far out were the kings?
  6. haha, it's fishing blue point, not bluefish point
  7. tried this place the other night. The water there is so deep it really freaked me out. My sinker would be taking line for a solid minute i swear. Tried using SPs... no idea how to even work them in a place like blues point. At the end of the night i think i hooked onto a huge squid. Ended up snapping my 15lb mono after (i think) he latched onto some rocks. Shame, cos it was really pumping hard for a lot of the time Any idea if the seaweed infront of the breakwalls is any good for squid?
  8. So what's the story behind these things? Can someone explain it for a newb? I hear about this stuff all the time. Is this mostly for estuaries and lakes? Would these be any good for casting off ocean rocks? And do other species take them too?

    Sharks

http://images.google.com.au/images?q=Port%...sa=N&tab=wi Doesn't look like the one I caught. That thing is marked like a desert tank
  10. Awesome Thanks Roberta. I'll assume Luderick59 has written about it in a post so i'll search for that. One last question. Under what kinds of circumstances would you cast your float away from you? I find that if it's in front of me i can have some kind of control over it, but if i cast it away then it will always get washed up on rocks just because it's been cast into an area that has wash around it.

    Sharks

i've caught a few sharks along the rocks, it's always the same type. Chocolate brown with a typical small shark build. Anyone have any ideas what kind it is? I always throw them back because I thought they wouldn't be good eating. I took one home the first time I ever caught one. Here's a pic
  12. Hi Roberta, thanks for your quick reply I've had a think about your response and still have a few more questions Is there any kind of guideline as to whether they'll be right in front of you or not? Will any rock with some white water and weed on it be a potential spot for blackfish that I can try out? Also, is there a minimum depth that I should be looking for when i'm fishing for them? Sorry my internet is capped and it often doesn't load all the pictures. So you effectively have a seperate line which is made to break if you get snagged? Under any conditions do you not use a float? I'm thinking that if i'm fishing right in infront of me then can't i just use a running sinker and hook rig? If the rod has my full attention (and both my hands) why do we still need a float? I see I guess it'll be more or less impossible to catch a groper with a size 8 hook though
  13. thanks for sharing your knowledge guys I'll definitely try out the plastic bottle trick I see some dark coloured little fish in the water that often nibble away at my soft plastics, these aren't poddy mullet are they? Anyone know what fish they are and if i can trap them the same way to use as bait?
  14. hi, i've just recently started looking at blackie fishing and I was wondering a few things 1. Do i just plonk the float right in front of me? If i'm standing on a rock that gets some decent white water and has weed on it can I just let the float sit right in front of it? I've always imagined blackfish to be hiding under the rock that i'm standing on 2. My leader always gets caught and i end up losing my float. Aren't leaders meant to be heavier then the mainline so doesn't that mean you'll be breaking the main line before your leader and thus lose your float? I lose a float every time i try to fish for blackfish. 3. Is it possible to fish for blackie's if I just let my rod stand beside me while i'm fishing lures on my 8' rod? 4. Will a place with blackfish also have fish like groper and drummer? Thanks aplenty
  15. sorry i'm a newb can i use this trap for livebait when im fishing from rocks? Do i put some rocks in so it sinks to the bottom? Thanks
