Hi guys, I have only ever bought department store camping headlights for squidding at night and find they are pretty useless to some i have seen worn and used by others. Any tips for brands or specifications or other features when I purchase please. For example, lumens is obviously brightness, but can you have too many lumens? do they need to be more of a spotlight or floodlight? The more information the better please. Many thanks, Slabslinger

Got kitted up at Xmas time at the local for the same budget with a Symetre 2500 on a Shimano Raider 6101 SP rod, . Very happy. Went 15lb on the braid and handles it fine, mostly chucking around metal slices for bonnies and sambos off wharves.

Just started getting into fishing with metal slices and managing a few bonito, tailor and salmon. Mostly catching and releasing, though occasionally hot smoking a tailor but wondering if bonito is any good for sashimi or in the smoker? Thanks in advance, SS

Hi All, I'm heading to Coffs (Korora Bay) next week. Struggling to find much info about the fishing there and beach terrain. Any general info about conditions or experiences there would be appreciated. I'm picturing taking the kids for bream and flathead thru the day. Fair call!! I used to leave my thongs on the grass before going over the dunes of whatever beach I was fishing, that was until I came back one time and the straps were all but eaten through. Distinctive ratty teeth marks. Slabslinger

G'day Zenman, I've got a thing for LR too. Got my one and only jew there last year. Lots of good sharks too as you say. Then if you want to lighten up, Bream Salmon Tailor etc as you want them. But I'm happy to stick out a livey or big slab and wait and wait. I'll get rewarded again one night. I joke that my first was a thousand hour fish. But in thinking about it, it was probably not far off. Number 2 is already a hundred hours easily. Mind you I think i've had 2 crackers lost in that time. As far as LR carpark goes. Last night was the first time I've parked in there. I live across the street so usually just walk over. I can understand your concern though. Always younguns hanging around, and sometimes by the busload. Drove over as I was returning from catching yakkas. Have observed some crazy stuff over the time. Clashes with police, police helicopters and lots more. If ur worried park up on Pittwater Road. Street lights provide pretty good security and all us residents are quite on to any action. Mind you only last week the surf club got busted into with extensive damage to premises and property including an IRB and other equipment. IRB was launched in the middle of the night and found in the water next morning. Might see you down there one day. Slabslinger

After sussing out the gutter layouts at midday I hit the beach just on dusk armed with some lively large yakkas, couldn't get any squid as planned so these were the next best bet. 10pm high tide. No moon. Air pressure 1020+. Everything pointing the right way to add to my grand total of one jew. Then devo!! The gutter I marked and another reserve were chokkers with rods oh well, all the planning out the window. Was then pot luck to try and avoid a sand bar, but I think I succeeeded. Planned to fish the two hours up to & two hours past the high. Nothing much to report for the first 3 hours but a few short runs and regularly getting bitten off by some big toothy critters. Snipping my 40lb mono like it was cotton. Then finally as I was considering packing up & one of my 14ft Snyders buckles over and line starts peeling. I strike and bump into serious weight. This thing went for a looooooong run. Then headshakes....big definite headshakes. Jew?? I think so. I have had big powerful runs like this before, but without headshakes I call them correctly early for big rays or sharks. But this was different. After about 15 mins of shorter but equally powerful runs I lost the battle. I reeled in about 150m of slack line to find had been rubbed off on probably a boulder as I had lost the lot. Went slow after this so called it a night about 1am. I'll be back for more tonight, hopefully to square the ledger and with a few happy snaps for my report tomorrow. Slabslinger

Grrrrr!!!!! Cricket End of Season trip just announced for same weekend. Was looking forward to this. Sigh!!

Haven't seen em where i am. Can't think of any 15m deep wharf areas where I fish. Mind you I was squidding in Pittwater last week. Had 3 squid about to strike my jig and 2 metre long lightning bolts charge thru the squid. Not sure if they got them or not but the squid never re appeared. I think they were kings but not sure. Even a rat to get me off the mark would be sweeeeeeeeet! Oh well. I'll keep at it.

Thanks for the replies Cephalapod & hooklineandsinker. I'm all spooled up and almost ready to go. Couple of other related questions if anyone can help. I've tried to set the hooks on a big fish using braid before and lost him with the braid snapping like a rifle shot. How am I meant to set the hooks, compared to using mono. Perhaps I tried to set too early as he was on his main run *shrug* Also I plan on buying some fluorocarbon leader. When attaching it to my braid as a leader, am i better off with a swivel or just something like an albright knot. Slabslinger

Hi guys and girls, I've used braid before but not on my own gear. So bear with me. I have some 125yd of 14lb braid which I plan to topshot over some mono. My question is does the mono i'm going over need to be 14lb or is it good, bad or indifferent to have it a little stronger. At the moment I have mono spools of 6lb, 10lb, 15lb, 30lb, 40lb & 80lb. So was thinking to back it with 30lb mono, or should i just stick with the 15lb? Mostly targetting jews on the beach and have a 2nd heavier outfit, of 30lb mono with 40-80lb leader. However regular by catch include salmon, tailor, bream, and assorted sharks and rays, if that helps with your advice Cheers in advance, Slabslinger
