  1. Looking for a fishing buddy, should anybody be wanting to go out fishing and does not have anybody to go with, drop me a line. I launch from Balmain whenever I get the chance.
  2. Hello fellow Raiders, It is me... Ojay, I know I know... very long time between posts. Life has become very busy and I do not go out as much as I used to unfortunately. Seeing as I'm my biggest fan when it comes to my own YouTube videos, I recently made one to try remember my glory days of having more time and actually being able to take my boat out for a fish. Hope someone out will enjoy the vid, or at least entertain them for a couple of minutes. CLICK HERE -> Crabbing in Port Stephens Thanks, Ojay
  3. Hey all, New user of the site here. A little background, I've always loved fishing and usually go regularly over the summer but if i'm honest I never really have any idea what I'm doing. I've always had poor quality gear and just go off the beach or rock wall in random spots around Sydney. Rarely catch anything but enjoy it none the less. Recently decided I would wanted a boat so I could start fishing some different spots and get a little more serious about actually catching something. I did some logbook trips with my old man and got my license. Purchased an old 12' De Havilland Seabird with a 15hp Mariner. Boat is in good shape and I'm excited to start getting out as much as possible. While I've been out on my old man's boat a lot over the course of my life he wont be with me this weekend and it's my first time heading out with another mate. Was planning on potentially putting the boat in at Five Dock as it's a ramp I've been to a few times. My question is, where should I head for this first time? Heading straight into the harbour is a little intimidating. Would be nice to try for some flatties or bream. Maybe some squid if they are around. Preferably somewhere pretty chill as I am a bit nervous about the whole thing. After this first trip I may put up a post looking for someone more experienced to start coming along on trips. Thanks!
  4. Hi there guys, few months ago I was able to land a good deal on a 2010 500 Discovery Brooker boat. Overall I’ve always loved runabouts given their versatility and thought my family would loved it as much as I would but they don’t go fishing as much as I do or they like to stay in enclosed waters besides my dog 😂 so I’m at the point of thinking of a cuddy cabin conversation. Now before anyone suggest selling the boat and getting a cuddy/half cabin I know it doesnt involve all the hassle but the reason why I want this conversation is because I love this boat and I can’t literally point out anything that’s wrong with it. All my other boats were around 4-4.5 metre in size and wasn’t able to handle swell at all, given their draft and hull wasn’t deep and/or boat wasn’t stable enough. I’d like to know if such conversation is possible or if it does exist I know people whose done Center console conversations on cuddy/half cabins and runabouts but didn’t see a runabout to cuddy cabin conversation. ps: Did see fiberglass runabouts converted into cuddy/half cabin but for this topic my boat is a 5m aluminium. 5. Hi all, I am new to the forum and new to the area. I live close to the Port Hacking and I have a small tinny (too small and under powered to go out beyond the heads so I must stay within the shelter of the Port Hacking) I don't have a fish finder so I am hoping some of the more experienced Raiders would share their local knowledge and share some of the fishing spots on the hacking and what species to target at the spot? Thanks for reading, looking forward to learning from the Raider community. Cheers
  6. Hey Guys, just wondering if it is safe to fish around Jibbon Bombora just outside Port Hacking, and if so what is the best way to go about it? Cheers
  7. Hey guys, i’m looking for weekend fishing mates. Im relatively new in Sydney. Im free most weekends. Im interested in land based and off shore. I'm happy to share cost for off shore sessions. I'm on Instagram if you need to get in touch. @serendip_pelagics Cheers,
  8. Taking my boat to the Pittwater bay area tomorrow, does anybody know what fish you can catch, how to, where to and any other useful information on the area?
  9. Hi all, Have just done a small repair of some fibreglass on my boat where it has been a little gouged out by hitting the last keep roller while trying to drive up on the trailer. Anyhow started by sanding the area etc and laid up a little bit of glass and have sanded that this morning and notice there's a couple of little holes where obviously air has been. With these holes can I just hit them with a putty of some sort to fill them and then gelcoat over the top? Just wondering if I am meant to use a special type of putty filler too. Will try and load some pics from my phone. Thanks Geoff
  10. Hi all, I recently changed my rusted full wobble roller boat trailer to a spitfire aluminium trailer with both wobble rollers and keep rollers. I've had a few mishaps driving the boat up on the new trailer and it is always the last keep roller at the back of the boat it is designed so that you basically have to aim at that one spot on then work your way up the trailer, but thanks to winds or the current etc I've missed it a couple of times and have done a couple of deep gouges on my boat (the latest incident attached) After some ideas on avoiding this without having to actually pull a rope and winch it up, I much prefer to drive on when I can so if there's a DIY solution or something I can do like put the boat in the water more etc I'd really love to hear it. Thanks Geoff
  11. Hi all, Just a couple of questions regarding my transom. I have a 5.2 savage escort, think its a 91 model, I was looking at installing a new sounder this afternoon and I took of a piece of plastic chopping board I was using as a transom saver, I put that on nearly 4 years ago now, I sealed all the screw holes with sikaflex, I also sikaflexed the whole back of the board and sealed the edges once I was finished. Today as I undid the screws I noticed a bit of water coming from behind the board as I was loosening the screws off. Once the board was removed the holes appeared to be a little wet, so I got my drill and drilled into them a bit and I wasn't brinig out any board whatsoever, but to be honest I cannot remember if I did now the very first time either though, but what was coming out was like the fiberglass was like a wet paste. I only drilled within the hole itself, I never tried to re-drill the hole bigger, just put the drill bit in approx the same size as the whole. I think I have had some water seep in, and I'm not real sure how bad the damage would be, and not sure on exactly how to tell either. My question is from the pics, the area circled, because of the shape, would it be wood within that area or only fiberglass based on the shape? The actual part that the outboard is bolted to feels sturdy enough from what I can tell, I have also tapped around it and from what I can tell it sound the same and not hollow. If however I have a problem with this area, how hard is it to repair a transom based on the shape of it? Of all the pics I could find of re-paired transoms I have not seen one like this shape, so I'm scared that it cannot be done and the transom shape would have to change? Any advice and pointers much, much appreciated. Thanks Geoff
  12. Hey guys I'm looking into getting a tinny for fishing and almost everything in this plan seems very possible except for one thing: storage. So, the kind of boat I'm looking into is a very small tinny or even a kitted out rowboat and the plan will be to have the boat moored somewhere and the turn up with an esky, rods and a small clip-on electric motor. The problem is I have got no Idea where to leave it and I don't exactly want to redecorate my backyard with a tinny or shell out heaps of money on some boat storage facility. Is there a free storage place somewhere? Can I just leave it tied up to some tree on a little beach? Any advice would be much appreciated. BTW I live around lane cove/hunters hill/Gladesville
  13. Hi guys, Going down to the bay tomorrow, staying at batemans Bay beach resort. We are taking our tiny out for a fish, pretty sure it’s 14ft. Was wondering what the fishing is like around the islands, snapper island etc. what fish are around there what areas are good for snapper where are some good locations to fish what gear to use. I have seen some similar posts already but they are quite older so just wanting some new info, any info providing would be great! Cheers
  14. G'day Fellow Raiders, Just a quick report on this mornings voyage to the rip bridge (St Huberts side) My friend Fiona (Fi) was keen for a putt in the boat before she had to go to work, which gave us about 2 hours on the water. We took the Humdinghy (my boat) to orange grove boat ramp and away we went trying to waste no time. On our travels we saw a police boat getting information from another boat as we putted along with my little 6 horse power, and then ZOOM! off the police boat went straight out under the bridge and towards box head, passed us like we were standing still..Hopefully everyone is okay.? After another 10 minutes of cruising we hit our spot, dropped anchor, cracked a cheeky beer, baited up and away we went. Fi thought she'd try her luck with a squid jig, sadly nothing was taking it. My first few casts brought in a few tiddlers (bream, snapper, trumpeter) you know the usual annoying fish, and then I hooked into a pretty decent snapper which was great fun on 10lb mono zzzzzzz went the drag haha. After a few minutes I brought him in and he was just on legal, I thought maybe in another year you'll be ready, so I let him swim free. Fi finally got her rig ready (paternoster Rig) through a bit of tailor on and out it went. At this point I was boasting about the snapper and a few other fish I had caught, then Fi cut me short......ZZ, ZZZZZZ, ZZZZ, She was into something big. The fight was weird, almost like a big flathead with a shoe attached to it. Fi fought the mystery fish for about 10 mins trying to exhaust the fish before bringing it up to the boat. Finally the head came up, it was a huge flatty. As she brought it up to the boat I put the net around it and brought it in. On closer inspection she had hooked the flathead in the bum!!! I almost fell over backwards!!! hahaha!! absolute wrongtown! haha This was a big big flathead, not in length, but just overall FAT! The flathead only went about 65cm, but it was 11cm wide! This thing had been chowin' down the last few months! Usually we let the bigger ones go however, being the only flathead we have caught in a few weeks, we decided to keep it for dinner. We got 4 big beautiful steak fillets off it and the flesh is a beautiful white colour! Very keen for tonights dinner! Anyway, Thanks for reading Raiders I hope you got a little bit of enjoyment out of my report. Tight Lines! Regards, itscaca.
  15. Good day fellow Raiders! It seemed to be the perfect day, I had the day off work, the girl had the day off work, the sun was shining and the boat was ready to go. We started our day at about 11am, launching off orange grove boat ramp and heading towards the rip bridge. We decided to anchor St Hubert's side of the bridge where the current was slow and the water was somewhat clear (for Brisbane waters anyway). After about an hour of flicking plastic and getting zilch we decided to continue to Paddy's channel. On the travel we found a nice sand bar just at the start of Paddy's and decided to flick for a few flathead. After a few really good hits on the plastics we got jack of not hooking up and switched to bait (bonito). We casted out at the same time and both got hit in almost perfect sync, we couldn't believe it, after a bit of a fight up came two beautiful whiting, my girl's went about 34cm and mine was 30cm.....I tried stretching him but just couldn't get the extra 4cm's hahaha. We continued for about another hour and brought up another 4 whiting between us, all keepers! So in the Eski they went. On the last cast I hooked into something with a little more fight than the humble whiting, and had me running around the boat trying not to get tangled, after about 5 mins of fighting I brought up a nice sized tailor going about 36cm's, good fun bringing him up on such light gear. He put up a good fight so I threw him back to fight another day. After this we picked a friend up from the local wharf and back to paddy's channel we went, where not much fishing got done, but we had a few drinks and a good old chin wag. All in all we were out for 7 hours and we got something to take home with us which was a bonus. No Flathead this time, but thats the fun of fishing. Sorry about the lack of photo's, I'll make sure I get some next time. Thanks for reading Raider's, Good Luck!
  16. Keen on meeting someone who goes out on there boat and needs company. I'll pay my way and have all my gear, I just can't afford a boat. A good way to meet someone new, have a laugh and hopefully catch a few. A good way for someone to make a bit of extra cash. Let me know. I'm based near the city in Sydney
  17. Hi guys, I don't have a boat but would love to meet someone in the Eastern Suburbs that needs a mate to join along on weekends or midweek. I'm happy to pay for my spot, I have all of my own gear and think it would be a good laugh. I'm 33, down to earth, love my fishing but can't afford a boat right now. This would be a good way for someone to make a little bit of extra cash and have someone join them for a day out in Sydney Harbour. Let me know and we can go from there guys
  18. I just bought my first boat and the engine is having some problems. My mechanic says the engine is “hunting” when you accelerate (I don’t know what hunting is). It’s not starving fuel either. The carbi was rebuilt and the thermostat was welded closed (it was open). We tested compression and the spark plugs and everything seemed fine. Any solutions? Engine is a PowerTec 40HP (knock off Yamaha engine) Thanks in advance
  19. Hi All Im looking at getting myself a tinnie to run around Sydney harbour. Cant park it in my apartment building as parking is underground. Driving through Sydney I’ve noticed boats parked in the street. Will I be able to park my boat in the street, or even in another area from where I live In Sydney? Wondering how guys go about doing this as I’m very keen to get a boat. Cheers Nick
  20. Hi all, Took the kids out on Sydney Harbour yesterday for a fish but couldn't catch a cold... or even a bite! We fished Snails Bay around 2pm, Woolwich moorings around 3:30, then after a swim tried Hunters hill at 4:30. The weather turned so we headed back and got in as it started to rain. I did catch a metre long stainless ladder.. was going to clean it up but covered in oysters so the kids would have stepped on it for sure. Was burleying mouldy bread maybe that was a turn-off? Also burleyed some frozen bonito from last trip. Would love any pointers on bait / rigs / protected spots to get the kids on to fish! Cheers, Andrew.
  21. Hey Raiders, Just making a quick report fishing in botany a couple of days ago. I'll keep it short so here goes (skip to bottom if you lack an attention span, 3 variants for this report below): > Plan was to leave mine and be on the water by 7am, didn't end up leaving mine till 730am. Travelled 10 minutes down the road with boat in tow heading to botany bay, pulled into servo to get backup fuel (just in case 50L wasn't enough inside the bay lol), only to realize there that I didn't bring the boat keys =/. Made a phone call to mum to bring the boat keys as friend and I waited at the servo eating breakfast at the HJ's. > Went to a local tackle and bait store in kyeemah to buy backup bait (exorbitant pricing@ 1 fresh squid costing$6.30 & 1 small ziplock bag of frozen pilles ~ 10 igaf? pilles @ $10) Launched at Kyeemah boat ramp and headed off to gather live bait around where the tugs are usually parked. > Gathered yellowtail scad & slimey mackerel in a maritime security level 1 zone. (Not sure why no one told us to move along, port authority etc etc drove right past a handful of times, safety in numbers?). > Then went to squid grounds to try and find squid, none were found in the 20 minutes we tried (squidding is the bane of my fishing, i have no patience for it). > Went to oil wharf (my 'secret spot' is not so secret anymore after this vid, oh well) to drop some livies down and fresh squid strips (bought before launching as insurance). Caught 2 kings. 1@ 55cm on squid strip, 1@60cm on live yakka. Lost a few more livies and strips due to fish missing the hooks. Accessory battery couldn't keep fish finder alive anymore so was fishing blind for the 2nd half of the day ~1pm (its due for a replacement/ had spare older fully charged 12V battery on board but were to lazy to swap them around). > Things died down so moved to oil drums to try (without the aid of aforementioned fish finder), only caught pinkes, grinners, live bait tangles, & slimeys. Managed to catch 2 keeper flattys and 1 keeper bream though, so had something to take home. > Things weren't so hot at drums so went back to my secret spot as it got later in the day, no success. > Headed home on 'mood lighting' before it got to dark, earnt my paycheck driving back to the ramp from the oil wharf due to a decent wind blowing to the north east, pushing the boat from the port rear sideways the entire time and driving in an awkwardly angled sea/waves. > All in all a enjoyable day as that's the first time the Formosa has been taken to the bay and the weather cleared up nicely. Lots of bait schools around and the bay wasn't that busy with most people travelling elsewhere for the long weekend. For those who have a short attention span, here's a video instead (warning 10 minute video): Click here --> Fishing botany bay using live bait For those with no attention span: tl;dr version Went botany bay, caught fish, heres pics. Thanks for your attention. OJ
  22. Hey guys! New to fishraider , this is my first post. I have just purchased my first boat , 310 dart aluminium tinnie I'm keen to build a flat floor for the middle part but I have no clue or idea on how to do it. I was only going to cut out the marine ply and just leave it removable in the bottom but I'm afraid it'll rub and go through the aluminium or bend the two support strips that run across one side to another. cheers kaneo!!
  23. Morning/Afternoon Fellow Fishers, Just wondering if i can get some Pointers, Tips, Fishing Buddy? I have just got my 2nd boat 17" with 115hp engine ready to start doing so offshore fishing. I used a 16" to trawl around North and South headland but looking now to go more offshore. ( I have all safety equipment) I have done a lot around Nelsons Bay and the islands off nelsons bay but have never been out to FADS, TEXAS, Shelf before! I am looking for another boat or exp offshore fisherman to head out with me just so i have the safety of another boat for the first time heading so far offshore. I am located in Western Sydney and use Drummond boat ramp but am willing to travel to suit. If anyone interested or have any extra pointers feel free to reply. Thanks & happy fishing. Jason
  24. Hey Raiders!!! Mate and I are planning to hire a tinnie from Como and looking at maybe boating down and around Woronora system and Georges. As I am normally a non-boater angler, I was hoping to reach some more secluded spots or boat-only access areas which hold a good day of fishing. Just wondering if anybody has had any experiences or know of any consistencies in these systems who would be willing to share/point me in the right direction, and any advice on what type of gear/bait I should use. Ill most likely be armed with 2 roads, Raider with 2500 sienna, and Shimano Sahara with a 3000 reel, both with under 10lb line. Happy Fishing ktan3235
  25. Hey fellas im chasing some advice on a rod to match to a Penn Spinfisher V. Im looking at getting the 6500, something that can handle decent fish off the rocks or off a boat when the opportunity arises. I already own a Shimano Symmetre and a Sedona in the 4000 size that I use from the beach and off rocks around the northern beaches. I know that the 5500 and the 6500 have the same internals with just a difference in line capacity, will probably look to load around 30lb braid 50lb FC leader on it. Can anyone recommend a MH fast action rod that I can use off the rocks and then also possibly off a boat for jigging and trolling. Main use would be flicking metals and general bait use, pillys, whole squid and strips on gangs. Price range would be between $100-200 depending as the reel will set me back about $200. Cheers.
