  1. I recently bought a Penn 950 SSM. I used it for one session on the beach at night and one in early morning. Towards the end of the second session, the drag started to tighten itself when I pulled line out of it which then made it harder to pull line out until eventually, it was impossible to take line. I have absolutely no idea why it is doing this, as I haven't taken the reel apart except for when I put the line spool into hot water after I put line onto it. I am pretty confident I didn't lose any parts while doing this. I thought maybe it had a bit of sand stuck in it so I took the line spool of and cleaned/ oiled the reel. This didn't help. How should I fix this?
  2. Hey everyone, I'm looking to get into the beach shark fishing scene and I would like to use an Alvey reel. Are Alvey reels adequate for fighting such powerful fish? Is there a steep learning curve? Would a second hand $20 Alvey of gumtree still work well enough to catch sharks? Would this reel be more suitable for catching sharks Please let me know. Cheers?.
  3. This may have been posted before as it's a few years old. Is new to me and seems interesting. Anyone know enough to comment? 'FISHING REEL DRAG TRIBOLOGY' More here; FISHING REEL DRAGS - THE BASICS
  4. Hi All, Just wondering if anyone has an idea of sizing system used for spinning reels. I have either a 1500 or 2500 reel on my 2-4kg bream outfit I have a 4000 or 4500 reel on my 5 -10kg snapper outfits I have a 14,000 reel on my heavy spinning outfit. I've read that there is no obvious consistency in numbering across different manufacturers. Does the numbering system come from a drag rating, a weight in some odd unit of measurement, a reel dimension? Thinking about it the only real (pun unintended) system I could come up with that could be standardised across all manufacturers would be a line system based on a line of agreed diameter. For example you could get 1,000 feet (or yards or metres - just examples) of 1lb mono line (of agreed diameter) on a 1000 reel. A 2500 reel could hold 2,500 feet (or yards/metres) of the same line and so up the scale. The numbering would be to the nearest 500. Anyone else have any facts or theories? Regards, D.
  5. Hi all, I own a Shimano Sahara 2500fe and my drag sound is not working, I believe I have played around my drag clicker and I would like to know which direction it should be pointing and how it should look like for it to function properly. If someone can upload a picture of their sahara's drag clicker while its screwed onto their spool I would be more than grateful. I also believe I may need a new drag clicker.
  6. Hi everyone, I'm new to south coast NSW having come up from west coast Victoria. Down there you get huge rips and powerful side currents which means we use a paternose rig with a 6 oz star on the bottom that can bury itself in the sand. Up here there doesn't seem to be such a problem, is that right? I've read on this forum of people using a ball sinker off the beach in channels??? Or live bait and no lead at all?? Any thoughts?
