  1. Hey raiders, where’s some go to spots around the west side of Lake Macquarie to jig for some squid land based? Any jetty’s around? The only place I know where there is some is styles point at Rathmines, but every time I go there they are not interested in my jig no matter what I do. I’ve rubbed prawn, anti seed oil, pilchard and S factor on my jig but they are still not interested, but I see heaps of them smashing the surface, so they are obviously hungry. Ive tried many different colours and sizes to no avail. It’s frustrating as hell!!!! many tips please it’s driving me insane, I’ve also jigged an hour before high tide and just abit after high, that’s when the sun comes up! I usually go at around 4am when there is not much wind. thanks !
  2. Hey guys! new to the forum, just wondering if you guys have any tips and tricks about fishing west side of Lake Macquarie, I’m in the middle of getting a boat but for now I’ll only be fishing land based, I usually go out to Wangi near the caravan park and fish half pilchard and squid for bait with not much luck, catch a fair few 30-40cm bream but main target fish are flathead. Can’t catch a flathead if my life depended on it. Other places to go are coal point off the rocks on the point, And off the rocks near club Catalina at Rathmines. Heading out to a jetty tomorrow morning to try and get some live squid for bait, might try the Rathmines jetty near styles point. Would live bait be a good start for flatty? If so what would your tackle outfit look like? Also just started to give the squidgies a go, never had a bite on them yet, any suggestions on them aswell? Thanks in advance! EDIT: I meant west side of lake!!
  3. Hey everyone, I'm going to sunshine in Lake Macquarie. I was wondering if anybody knows some good spots for bream, flathead or whiting around there and how to fish them (I'm only going as a once of so I won't take your favourite spot ?). I was also wondering how you guys would go about fishing a jetty/ wharf for bream, I am pretty new to fishing, however, from what I've gathered a running sinker down to a size 1 octopus hook with a bit of servo prawn on it would do ok if not the same caliber as some live poddy mullet suspended under a float, etc. Please put any advice about bread and butter species in this chat and if you feel like it share your PB bream.
  4. Used to fish all the time, just getting back into it. Struggling to get on to some legal fish. Using 1-3kg rod., 8lb line, sinker swivel and 1/0 long shank usually. Fishing only off land. Using Hawkesbury prawn, tried fresh mullet and bottle squid. Only thing I catch stuff on is the prawns tried Swansea, found the water too quick. Wangi - great water, nice and deep, no fish. Stockton break wall. -Got two keeper flat head there that’s it happy for any hints and tips, locations or anything else cheers. need to find a spot, and any rigging info. thanks
  5. Hi Raiders ive recently found a good spot to catch poddy mullet in the Newcastle area. I've tried using them in a few different spots live baiting but have not been successful landing any fish using them. I've had one hook up to a big sting ray I couldn't pull in. I was wondering if anyone in the Newcastle/lakemac area knows a good land based spot where these baits would be very effective thanks in advance
  6. Headed up to Pelican at Lake Macquarie for an extended family weekend. This morning the father in law and I left the house as 5:45am for Swansea boat ramp. My first voyage to Lake Mac so I was excited and exploring the lake. Also my first trip fishing with a crewman. Beautiful, warm, clear morning with light wind. High tide set for 9:15 and our first spot was Swansea bridge. We got ocean side and I deployed the electric motor. Current was too quick and GPS failed, we started rushing towards the pylons. Tried to start motor, was in gear and it wouldn't start. Managed to steer the electric just keeping us off the pylons, started engine then got us moving forward away from danger. After this experience we picked a spot further up and closer to shore. Worked the area for a while with baits and plastics. No bites, so we headed off. We moved to the drop off and sounded some fish. Finally got the father in law onto a few tiny snapper. Released. Also got a yakka which we live baited for no luck. Then the father in laws loads up, snapped before the surface, had a bit of weight maybe a flathead. Could have kept finishing but the women started calling so we headed back in for breakfast. At the ramp at Swansea loading the boat onto the trailer the weed got me, fell in and the father in law came to assist and also fell in. Lucky we didn't have our phones and I did lose my keys but managed to find them. Short session which was great fun just being out on the water. There were LOTS of people on the water but reasonably spaced out. It's a great spot I will definitely be back. Cheers, Luke
  7. Hi Raiders, off to Lake Macquarie next week for a few days of non stop fishing. I haven't been there since I was a kid, does anyone have any good info on what to target and where at this time of year? I assume same species as Sydney harbour, but not sure., stick to the channel or go around the lake? thanks
  8. G,day Raiders.... I have recently moved to Lake Macquarie and i will be competing in the Doylo RSL bream and flathead classic. I have never really targeted bream before let alone in Lake Macquarie... I have been hearing stories about chicken guts, skirt steak coated in parmesan cheese as great Bream baits. Are these people taking the piss or has any other raiders used these successfully? If anyone has any tips, locations, GPS marks , bait, lures, SP's that will help out it will be greatly appreciated
  9. Good Morning All! Weather has been so great lately I have decided to take the boat and the brother up to Lake Macquaire for a fish on Thursday night and all day Friday! Its been a while since we have been up that way and just wondering if anyone had some advice on what type of baits are working at the moment and where the hot spots are in the lake? Also if someone could clarify what type of crab pots we are allowed to be use in the lake? and if anyone knows any good spots? cant wait to here from some of my fellow raiders Thankyou!!
