  1. Hi there fish raiders, could one of you please help with identifying this fish species please (see below photo after the fish has been cleaned. There is a bit of ice on it as it was in the freezer). It looks similar in body structure to a Trevally but has a bony like horizontal section towards the tail. It was caught at an offshore FAD in Sydney.
  2. Hey new here, I live around the Fairfield area and was wondering if anyone has fished any of the creeks around the area like “Clear Paddock Creek” or “Orphan School Creek” that run in and around Cabramatta, Canley Vale, Fairfield.etc And if so, what species have you caught? If no one has fished there, what are some good spots around these areas to get into freshwater fishing? I want to target Aussie bass mainly. Thanks!
  3. Dear Fishraiders, During the recent Marine park proposal discussions I have frequently seen reference to the 600 marine species that need to be protected. I wanted to learn more and after a quick search I found a list prepared by the Australian museum. https://australianmuseum.net.au/fishes-of-sydney-harbour To me it has made some interesting reading and left me with loads more questions (some will only take time to sit down and work it out). While titled "Fishes of Sydney harbour" it is pretty broad in the inclusions. For example, as per the list I am really looking forward to catching a Mahi Mahi or Marlin in Sydney harbour this coming summer from the kayak. There is only one species on the list which is only found in Sydney harbour – the Sydney Scorpion fish How many of the listed species are specifically targeted by recreational fishing and of those how many range predominantly outside Sydney harbour How many are under threat or vulnerable (due to fishing or other factors)? Mulloway (Jewfish) and Gemfish come to mind which is why the bag or boat limits would be so low at this time. Do the pro marine park campaigners really see us targetting species such as sea horses, wrasse, box fishes, pufferfishes, scorpionfishes and others. I figure if you leave them alone the populations will generally look after themselves. While I was surprised to catch the attached in Mosman I noticed it did make the list. It was released even though it has, by all accounts, excellent table properties. On a side note, the last Fairy Penguin (I still prefer that name to Little Penguin) breeding ground on the mainland in NSW is in Manly ( http://www.manlywharf.com.au/see-do/fairy-penguins/ ). As per the link I understand the biggest threats to them are the land-based predators (specifically dogs) and humans. While the blanket protection of marine species is on the agenda I’m waiting to see if Justin Field (Greens NSW spokesperson for the Marine Environments) and company will get around to arguing that all dogs should be removed from the Manly peninsula. I'm pretty sure if there was a telephone poll we could get a 99% plus approval rate for the protection of these lovely birds which I am fortunate enough to see now and again on Sydney Harbour. Now that would be an interesting campaign. Regards, Derek
  4. G day raiders. Been itching for a fish for a few weeks now and finally get a chance this coming Tuesday morning!! Anyone have any suggestions as to a target species? I keep going back n forth between bream, blackies and salmon. Not sure what species is biting best at the moment in the harbour as I've been out of action for a few weeks at the least. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.
  5. Hello Raiders, Lately I have been looking at trying some beach fishing and my mate and I are looking up to try Manly beach, picking up some worms and seeing what we get from there. Does anybody know if there are any good spots out on manly beach to pick up some worms, and if there are pippies out there? If you have insight on how to pick up these worms I'm all ears (youtube makes it look so easy!!!!). If any locals see this post, is the northern or the southern side of the beach more productive, and what would I be expecting to pick up (and what rigs should I use)? Im also looking at investing an alvey reel onto my surf rod because it's butt is a bit short. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Happy Fishing KTAN3235
