  1. G'day fellow Raiders, long time reader first time poster (I hope i've posted in the right section, please correct me if I haven't) I've been down Avoca rocks recently (almost every day for 2 weeks) morning and night, spinning metals for Bonito, such as, Halco twisty (15 up to 55 Grams) and a few others which names escape me. I usually throw my bigger rod out with 1.7 metre trace with gang hooks and float with a salted pilchard and leave to sit while I spin off spinners ledge. I have had zero luck! I was lucky enough to bump into Ray R (Top Bloke!), to whom i've met a few times here and there and he was kind enough give me a few pointers although, still no luck. Does anyone have any pointers? Am I doing anything wrong? People seem to be landing Bonito left, right and centre around me, it seems I just don't have "the magic touch" Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Raiders, Itscaca.
  2. Hi guys looking for new monofilament line for my spinning set up, I am switching back from braid. I’m running a Daiwa Saltiga on a 6ft 6 Daiwa saltist rod. I generally fish off a boat and flick hard bodied lures so like a distance cast. Looking for recommendations for a good brand of mono!
  3. I spend four hours in two sessions spinning at Shark Point (Clovelly) in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs over this weekend. Saturday 10:30-13:00, light NE blowing, 0.5-1.0m NE swell, partly cloudy, relatively clear water Sunday 05:30-07:00, light NW at first, turned into a gusty SW by about 06:45, better wash this morning than yesterday No fish were caught. Lures used were metal slices (gold and silver around 60g), surecatch 85 gram metal jig (pink/chrome), blue Halco 125mm popper and a white one this morning with the red head. Also, this morning I tried some of those smelly soft plastics with 6/0 Gamakatsu for jews or kings. Smidgey I think is the name... Had fun, as these were my first two sessions since 1996 or so, despite not catching anything except seeing three pods of dolphins and a lone seal. Previously I used to love fishing the Eastern Suburbs rocks....
  4. G'day fishraiders, I'm hopefully heading down to Callala bay for a night or so in a few weeks and would like to hit a couple of spots for pelagics. If you have any suggestions feel free to PM me. I have a newly acquired 9ft shimano to try out sometime soon!
  5. Hey there, just want to know if anyone here uses ready made snap swivel wire/cable traces when they spin. I use these but i'm thinking maybe they spook the fish.so i'm going to go back to how i used rig up only with a snap swivel,no trace. The reason i started using the wire cable traces in the first place was because surface fish have big sharp teeth and i found out a long time ago that they can bite your line off easy near the lure. After a 5 hour spin session yesterday,my arms and back feel like ive been hit by a truck, with no result. The conditions were perfect yesterday for surface fish and I know sometimes they just dont bite or your lure is not what they are chasing at the time but im starting to think the trace is spooking them. What do you think ? Thanks
  6. Went out sunday for a quick session between 10 and 12noon. Headed out to the heads- no bird activity in the harbor but around the corner and there was a beautiful sight. Birds and boiling water. We had one working a fly outfit and I had a small halco metal on a Fugi rod and 7kg mono.. Not long before I got a solid strike and then some aerials and a great fight. These guys fight like hell and on my mid range gear its just great fun. They disappeared before long and we had to get back but was a very fun session.
  7. haven't landed a fish since new years day been out 5 or so times... so I took some burly (less common for me) and tried the stones again. given my run of quiet mornings I didn't get up early and got stuff done around the house. I got to the rocks at 12:30 and started flicking my metal, about 30min in and I'm on to a big fat lazy salmon that got 3/4 the way to the rocks before its first jump where it spat the trebles straight back at me... had to use some of my matrix skills to save my pretty face. I had a few more follows and decided to change to my metals with single hooks (just set these up so didn't know how it would go). I then started to focus on the wash zone and got a good strike but it wasn't pulling hard and I felt a gentle thud, thud through my line so thought i may have fouled something. Turned out to be a nice little bonnie. I kept at it in the was and pulled a good sized salmon out. Next cast the whole school followed the few that broke off to chase my lure i recon there were 40 big fish visible from the rock. Obviously my lure went straight back out and I got another sambo who this time was followed to the rocks by 3 kings, they were attacking the lure in the salmons mouth... zzz. Got a few more salmon and called it a day. Filled the freezer with fish for burly and had the bonnie with some thai food last night
  8. hey guys I'm heading down to narooma/mystery bay this weekend looking for some rocks/beach to spin off for pelagics. Does anyone know any easily accessible spots?
  9. I went for a morning fish before the rain got too heavy. Picked up this Tailor on a slug on the east wall of the point. Fished for 2h then it started to rain pretty heavily and i packed up.
  10. Spent the morning out on the rocks looking for some pelagics. First hit was after 3 casts but it didnt stick... 3 hours later I get busted off by something big enough to think a 6' halco popper was bit sized... spewing, it was my leader knot that gave :'(... After much swearing and 20 more min of nothing, the ocean taunted me... the biggest bait ball/salmon smash up I've ever seen exploded out of the water... on the other side of the bay, well out of reach... Then out of no where the water in front of me began to boil and my slug was coming straight through it I was on!! After some acrobatics and a short fight I landed him. not the biggest model but he was exploding with white bait. Called it after a bitter-sweet sesh.. finished off sweet so ill be back tomorrow Pat
  11. Got out to the trap at 6am (bottom of the tide) after watching for 10 min the big waves were only just trickling over the rocks. hooked up 3 ~50-60cm salmon on metal slugs but they all spat the hooks. 2 were hook on the surface after some exciting strikes. 2 hours no fish landed i called it a day (the tide and swell were rising and i was at the trap....)
