Penguin
Is'nt towing a 3000kg boat using a Ford Explorer a bit much? that boat would be nearly 1000kg heavier than the Explorer. Explorers are under powered in my oppinion for towing large boats, even with a V8,these V8's if memory serves me correct are only 170kw,thats less kw than a 6cyl petrol Nissan Patrol at 189kw and even less than a 4ltr V6 petrol Toyota Prado at 179kw. If someone was using an under powered tow vehicle then fuel consumption would be extremely high. Big boats and trailers need big tow vehicles,a big engined vehicle may use more fuel just gettin around town than a small engined vehicle, but you load them both up with the same heavy weght and the smaller engined vehicle will work harder and suck more juice. If you wana tow heavy loads get one of these, if your boat or load isnt huge something smaller will suffice.
heckendorfmortgage
Dragging a big boat around, I reckon an overloaded commodore could chew as much juice as a 'thirsty' 4WD. Comments? MH

Flightmanager
Dragging a big boat around, I reckon an overloaded commodore could chew as much juice as a 'thirsty' 4WD. Comments? MH Chances are , you are right , but that would depend of course on the size of the motor , final drive ratio , and weight of the boat being towed , single or tandem axle etc. A V6 Commodore towing a 1.5 tonne boat is going to be working pretty hard, whereas a six cylinder 4x4 with different final ratios may do it a bit easier. In my Pajero , towing a 1 tonne camper trailer , my fuel consumption went from 8l / 100K to 11 l / 100K , at 100 KPH . Once over that 3000 RPM range (or 110 KPH) , it shot up to 14 l / 100K . If you are towing a heavt trailer , the vehicle may well be able to tow it , but it was not what it was primarily designed for , and a fuel consumption penalty will result.
