Both RObs....wow you guys are doing a great job...especially with the Pics of Cliffo...well done

Some good news for all the LB guys is that i received word today that KIngs are busting up around CLifton Gardens and a few over legals were caught there.

Also Rob's.....I have decided that i will not be fishing too much at the social, what i will do is maybe take out some of the members that have recently purchased downriggers and teach them how to use them....i imagine there will be a few as FR has gone Downrigger crazy...so if you wanna know a few tips let me know.

That's a great offer, I don't have a downrigger (yet) but I am keen to catch up and chat about the benefits, best place to fit and use of it.

Rob Pls add Mottyman , junior Mottyman ( Andy ) & myself.

Can anyone advise on the parking facilities at Tunks Park. I was last their 3 or 4 years back & it was limited. I then heard it had been reduced further due to works being done by the Water Board or some other Gov. concern

How about a couple of you more experienced kingy hunters letting us amutuers know what sorth of gear we should be bringing along for both boat and landbased.

I know I could use a few pointers

Kelvin, netic?

This is only my personal view but here goes...

Line-minimum of 10kg mono or better still 30lb braid. I like 50lb braid.I prefer heavy line as losing fish is not good for the fish or the fisher.

Reels- something that will hold a good 7kg of drag. Overhead or spinning doesn't matter but I like overheads from a boat.

Rods- suited for 15kg line. Silstar has a rod for 15kg that is under $100. Good rod for the price-indestructible.

Terminals- Hooks, got to be decent strength. Popular sizes are from 4/0 to 10/0. I use 7/0 and 8/0 gammakatsu Live Bait chemically sharpened hooks. Swivels...crane type rated for 100lb or more.

Leaders- If you are on a limited budget, this is where you should spend the big bucks as this is where things can fail big time. I use seaguar fluorocarbon mainly in 50lb. Can use mono leaders like tough trace from black magic, jinkai, schneider but fluorocarbon for me. Just be careful as most fluorocarbon has bad knot strength and seaguar has been for me the most reliable leader and holds beautiful knots. P.S with most fluorocarbon leaders don't use the blood knot as it will slip everytime. A uni knot is a better bet.

Sinkers- in various sizes. size 4-10.

Floats or ballons. Useful for live baits while fishing at anchor or from the shore.

Hope this helps CHeers kelvin

My gear is similar to Kelvins.

I run heavy gear with heavy line classes.

I personally havent been much of a braid fan over the years. But most people do use braid so i dont think it matters if your using braid or mono but i would recommend mono if your fishing near structures like the wedding cakes. A king can wrap you around the cake and it wont only be the leader that is rubbing along the pylons. Atleast with mono you know if he runs to the pylons it can rub a fair bit before giving way where as with braid you will be busted off almost immediately.

On the other hand braid does have more line strength so if you wanna lock your drag to turn the bastard it is best done with braid...In the end its up to you and your personal preference.

I fish with 24-37 kg T-curve rods and run two main reels for my King fishing, A tekota 800 with 24kg Mono line or a Spheros 14000 with an upgraded drag with 65lb braid. I am just about 2 buy a Tiagra 20 to replace the Tekota so i can can more drag pressure.

I use Flourocarbon and Mono trace, Like Kelvin i use Seguir because of its knotting ability, but as mentioned tieing flouro can be a bitch so make sure you have it right. With mono traces i only like 3 brands, Momoi, Jinkai or Black Magic.....I use 60lb traces for all my kings unless im jiging where i then move to 100lb trace.

With rigs a run a sliding snell which has been illustrated in a thread recently, I run a 5/0 live bait hook as a keeper and then a treble as the leader, do sometimes run circles as the leader but not too often but i will be trying out circles a bit more this summer.

I use a downrigger exclusively for my kings, will rarely fish for them without a rigger, i have 2 fitted to my boat so i can always have 2 baits out to cover the coloumn, If you only have one rigger then i recommend you stack it, but be careful with stacking as if not done right you can get some major tangles once hooked up.

I recommend 7lb weights for inshore fishing and heavier outside, weight will depend on the current.

Best areas to fish are around any structures, Markers or reefs/wrecks. Kings seem to like the proctection these objects offer and will congregate around them.

Areas that can be fished on the social day are.

Both wedding cakes ( hopefully the second one will be back by then), Yellow Marker of Neilsen Point, Yellow Marker inside Quanrentine Head, Red Marker just inside south head, White cement thing( lol) east off the naval base at clifton, Old mans hat, The sticks at the entrance to rose bay.

All these areas will hold kingfish during Summer as well as any other marker through our harbour. You also have the whole of middle harbour which Kelvin is the specialist of so he would be the man to speak too in regards to MH.

I dont think i need to go into which bait too much as it has really been covered well, Live squid is the best estuarie bait in Sydney, but Yakkas have been producing thus far this year.

Hope that helps

Oz
