King tide buries at least 20 4WDs

ANGLERS competing in a beach fishing event got a little more than they bargained for when a king tide buried their vehicles and left them stranded in sand dunes.

At least 20 four-wheel drives were left buried to the roof line in sand, near Kingston in South Australia's southeast, after the tide caught their owners by surprise last night.

"This king tide was a little bit bigger than normal," a police spokesman said today.

"Our main thing at the moment is to check everybody is safe and well.

"We believe no one was injured, but we just have to account for everybody at this stage."

The Adelaide Bank rescue helicopter was flying to the area and police patrols and SES crews were joining a search, the spokesman said.

Police have asked any competitors who left the area during the night to contact Mt Gambier police.

"At this time it's not known when the vehicles will be recovered from the beach," the police spokesman said.

Must have been a massive tide,

Do you think the veichals will be sent to the wreckers or could they be given a MASSIVE clean up?

Many thousands of odllars burried in the sand there.

cheers james

I think the vast majority of them will have to be scrapped.

Salt water and sand and vehicles don't mix too well, especially if it got into

the engine bay and the electrics.

I feel for the poor people who went to a fishing social like we all did yesterday

and came back to that disaster.

G`day Fellas ,

Saw a Range Rover bog down in Eli Creek on Frazer Island .

Pompous arrogant twit refused all help to get him out because his brother went for a Tractor at the Resort.

Two days later when We went up to Fish the Maheno Wreck , the Rover Has disappeared with only the roof Visible .

That little mishap gave me a great respect for Running Sand .

I lived in Adelaide in late sixties early seventies and used to spend almost every summer at Aldinga beach.

Saw a lot of cars end up like this. Can drive onto beach and set up for the day. For one reason or another we used to see the odd car get stuck and caught by the tide.

I those days they used to net the beach, pretty amazing to watch when the catch came in.

Remember going off shore with a mate of my dads a few k,s to a reef. Berleyed up and starting catching

garfish. A white pointer started circling getting closer until he came right in on the chum trail at the back of the boat. As he came alongside i looked and no word of a lie " a s....t myself and started cowering on the floor of the boat. The captain grabbed an oar and hit this pointer right on the fin. After that we left as dad and myself were a bit scared to say the least. Was bigger than the boat this shark. Ever since i have been fascinated by sharks.

Cheers

hi lucky ones,

yea we were there and we lost 2 AU Ford utes and a campervan, and yes the cars are write off's due to the sea water in everything. it cost us about 50 thousand for the utes and i threw the campervan in for a bonus.

luckily we were insured and now have to buy new ones(second hand). Me and my family thought the night would never end. it was cold and raining and so windy. it took only 15 minutes to say good bye to all our belongings. i feel sorry for the people who were no insured. it is still amazing how no one got hurt. must go now.

Sorry to hear about your losses WetCamper. I thought they would be writeoffs after

that episode.

Glad your insurance will cover your losses..It surprises me they didn't kick up a stink seeing they

were on a beach.

:1welcomeani: to the forum by the way and hope to read of your fishing adventures when you get

the new utes etc.

Cheers,

Pete.

:: hi pete

sorry for the delay in replying but have been busy with work and insurance and arranging 2 utes for work.

our insurance company (SGIC) were fantastic with us and i give them 150% out of 100 for all their help and quickness. we are so lucky we did not take our 3 grandchildren with us as planned. thank god!!! i am still not over the night as i have crying sessions by myself. i cant believe no-one informed us of the king tide. if they had we would have left when the wind took our tarp from over the camper. so many people knew of it coming and got off the beach and left all us suckers to survive. we had stewards going up and down the beach for the fish that were caught and they just did not inform any one. i have been told that RAA will pay the people that were insured and their companies wont pay, because of the beach. i dont think i will go camping on a beach again, my husband said he will, what a quiet weekend we will both have then. thanks for the welcome. i do not go on internet much but we keep reading the forum when i am on. i think it helps to get it off my chest.

thanks cindy. (wet camper). have a great day. see ya

Sorry to hear about your loss cindy, but in light of the circumstances it probably could have been much worse, thankfully you were insured but more importantly you and your husband were not hurt and no lives were lost. Hopefully its happy days from hear on. :D

:dito::dito: to that.

Be thankful everyone survived unhurt.

Glad it's all worked out OK in the end.

Did you manage any fish before the disaster struck?

Cheers,

Pete

:1fishing1: hi pete,

I am feeling much better today as it is POET DAY.(PI** OFF EARLY TODAY), the answer to your question did we catch any fish, is yes if you count seaweed. no if you dont. i have never caught anything there yet but jim has had a stingray a few years ago, and it was too small for a prize. OH WELL. i enjoy fishing off the jetty. i catch fish then. not very often though. yes we are all very thankful that no-one got hurt. thanks for your conversations. we now own four wheel drives so jim is prepared for next year. not me. you have a wonderful weekend. must go back to work.

cheers,

cindy.
