Certainly not a flounder. The pic is taken with the fish on it's side.

It's shape is kind of (in a rough sort of way) like a flatty.

It was very slimy and felt quite spongy to pick up.

Could possibly be a immature wirrah

It looks like the head is to flat to be a Wirrah.

Very similar to a Jawfish, caught a few up Cape York and we called them Cookie Monster fish :biggrin2:

But its not one of those, wrong area.

I'm pretty sure now it's not a cod (or Wirrah). If you look at the bottom fin it runs right along the bottom whereas the cod have those single fins underneath.

The Frogfish certainly looks close but this one didnt have the beard that the eastern frogfish has. Given that this one was only about 12cm long maybe it was a juvenile. It did have a wide mouth like the pics of frogfish I can find and the colouration is similar.

I will just have to go back to Lilli Pilli and get another one. This time I will take its ugly portrait with the canon no the nokia.

After further consultation  where no expense was spared :tease:

I'm led to believe that the tassels around the mouth wont be obvious out of the water, they stick to the skin.

so me-thinks its Ol "Batrachomoeus dubius"
