Kings And Jews

Went fishing today with Tony ( Rzee ) and Sean. Sean is a top bloke who looked after my Noble when the trailer broke down. Sean is a bit of an apprentice of mine. Been putting him on hard labour with jigging but this time we wanted to let the baits do all the work.

Wanted to target kings and jews.

Here's Tony with a 32lb jew

Nice to see U back Kelvin

I always enjoy your reports.

How do I get to be your apprentice (and is there a long waiting list)?

I have been fishing the harbour for about 8 years now and never even gotten close to your worst catch I would love to go out just once and get some of the fish you manage to catch (EVERY TRIP)

Think Im just a bad fisherman (That needs alot of help)

Any way well done & some very nice fish as well

I haven't been posting much for a variety of reasons. I don't think people want to see/hear of much the same thing all the time and I DON'T enjoy the notoriety !!!

I go fishing 2-4 times a week mainly for kings and jews. This winter has been absolutely sensational in regards to the fishing. We have gotten more in terms of both size and numbers than previous years, week in week out. In terms of numbers, we caught more kings per session in winter than in the warmer months. The kings really are on the comeback and that is great news. Fishing in winter is so much better -no crowds and you can sleep in!!

I have posted these most recent reports to first thank Oz and Steve. Wouldn't have been civil to let their generosity go without acknowledgement. Thanks guys.

The second report was to celebrate a great first for Tony. It was the first decent Jew for Tony :yahoo: .Jewies are THE fish. Just mentioning the name makes grown men weak at the knees. So much mystery and status. Anyway Tony has had a lot of "firsts'" on my boat (s) including his first yellowfin this year. That shut him up for atleast a week!

He also caught his first jewie this winter on my boat but it was only a schoolie but this fish gets him into the jewie club. Even though Tony is my regular deckie and supposed to do all the "hard" work- I had to catch the bait, rig the rod, set the bait out.....even hooked the fish. I had to shove the rod in his face for him to take it while the drag on the stella was howling on that first jewie run!!!! He'll have a smile on his face for a week! The next marlin we hook up is MINE!!!!

I have been getting a lot of questions on which techniques we use to catch these fish. Ill just say we use every method which works on the day. Of course we downrig but most of these fish weren't caught on a downrigger. As I have previously noted, downrigging isn't always the best method or the most efficient. I have spent $0000's on top notch electronics on my boat(s) to target these fish including downriggers but we only got 1 fish on the downrigger today. Some of the techniques we employ are old but gold techniques with a modern twist.

As for the location.... that is a question that is asked of me constantly. We caught these fish in the harbour today and yesterday. We move around a fair bit. We spend a few minutes on a spot to find if the fish are there or not and move on if they aren't biting. I don't like sitting around waiting for hours. I think I have some sort of attention deficeit thing and move on if there are no fish...I rather hunt them down!!!. Mobility is the key. GOt a really fast boat to get us around.

These particular spots aren't too much of a secret as hundreds of boats fish these areas. However, with jews in particular it is not the just the location that is important . You really need to figure out the small details that only time on the water will teach or if you are lucky someone with real knowledge will pass on. Have a look at all the famous jewie spots in Sydney like Juno, Flint and steel..etc and only a very few people catch good fish REGULARLY from these spots.Of course there are no guarantees in fishing and anything can happen. Flukey captures do occur but those who regularly catch good fish have put in the time to figure it out. Needless to say you can catch good fish in MANY different spots.

ANyway, I'll see you on the water. I promise to put in a report from time to time.....CHeers Kelvin

hey Kelvin... you forgot you also netted the fish!

i cant possibly explain the experience of fishing with Uncle Kelvin and do it justice..

"i got 2 kings coming up on the sounder" 5 seconds later its a double hook up!

"Thats a jew! thats a jew! drop the baits to the bottom"... 2 minutes later jew on the deck!

Kelvin does 90% of the work and makes it took easy to catch fish.

that next marlin is all yours mate i just wanna catch all the jewies! :1prop:

Sorry that I did not recognise you guys!! Lots of people come up to us constantly and my mental capacity is limited and my memory isn't up to scratch.

It was an interesting day we had that day in pittwater. We moved onto another spot out of the wind and got a whole school of kings around the boat. It was funny really as I was doing a demo cast on Tony's new outfit only to have a whole school of kings following the plastic. It was pandamonium for a while.

We also picked up 2 jewies that day. Not huge but a good eating size. I guess its times like this that makes us come back for more. CHeers kelvin

Tony has now become a very accomplished angler in his own right, well done tony on getting such a nice specimen of Jewfish....

Chat to you guys during the week....

That comes from MANY MANY hours of working out sounders!!!!! You're not too bad yourself Tony with sounders. I must say however, my sounders are better than yours so it makes things clearer. Having 4 different frequencies makes it too easy. We would have caught a few more if someone caught some BAIT.

For the marlin, you can have all the blues, I'll have the stripes. Don't want a bad back. Can't wait for Perth!!! Cheers Kelvin

Great going Kelvin and Tony!! That jew looks fantastic, would have been one hell of a thrill!

The kings are definently showing up in good numbers close to the surface, we got 10 in quick succession during the week..all rats though.

Have you been getting any kings on those soft plastics we were talking about?

Hows the flattie sessions coming along? I'm surprise you havnt stumbled across a large flattie in the mix of jews and kings!

Greg-I am surprised that you are allowed out after having the baby. You got to work on your PB king you got on my boat. THere are definitely bigger fish around. I'll tell you about some of the big mutha kings I have been getting lately.

I'll be on the water on wednesday with Peter as well so I'll probably see you around. Cheers Kelvin

Kelvin lol i didnt want to say anything but yes i did get my PB on your boat, just for the record gentleman, Kelvin,s electronics on his boat are as he states........."State of the art!!!" it makes fishing so easy that it should be illegal. I thank Kelvin for all the info over the year, he has shown that the way i was fishing was like i was still in the stone ages,

Thank you for the info .................and my p.b hehe even though i didnt catch no squid that day.

Dan, we have been getting kings on almost anything we throw at them. In the last month or so we have been getting them on the surface and down deep on plastics, metals..etc. Often see acres of kings offshore chopping up the surface. They are too easy when they are like this....I am not complaining!!!

Been working on my flathead technique. Used to chase them constantly on live bait while living in swansea. THere are some big flathead there and good kings as well but catching flathead on lures is tough...for me atleast. So far everytime we go flathead spinning, I get more kings than flathead!!

I get a strike and think it is a flathead only to hear the drag scream from a run from a king. CHeeses you off BIG time!!! Even went fishing with a mate who is a charter operator specifically to catch flathead on lures. He gets all the flathead and I only manage to hook up kings. So far my flathead tally on lures is pathetic.

My mate Jack ( wacko ) who is a bream specialist is going to show me how it is REALLY done! I am trying to wean him off spiderline gear that he uses for bream. He is slowly coming around. Got him jigging up kings big time and he is now a jigging addict like the rest of us.

I think I have to go somewhere where there are NO kings to get those flathead on lures. Somewhere like lake illawarra where the flathead are thick..and no kings.

I do get the occasional flathead while fishing for kings/jews but they don't count! Cheers Kelvin
