mrmoshe
A touch chewy and by hook he's crook 14 March 2008 THEY are used to working with wildlife, but staff at Pittwater Animal Hospital drew breath when this huge lizard was brought in. The lace monitor, which measures about 1.2m and weighs 3.45kg, had been spotted at Lovett Bay on Pittwater's western foreshores with a trail of fishing line hanging out of its mouth. It seems the rather large lizard had been doing a spot of fishing but had bitten off more than he could chew. Gardener Kyle Woods, who regularly sees the large lizards in the area, found it and brought it to the surgery. The reptile was anaesthetised and an X-ray revealed this hook. But when veterinarian Eamon Grattan-Smith operated there was more a brightly coloured lure, two lead sinkers and some chop bones. "We took it in the consultation room and expected to find the hook in its mouth, but we realised it was further down," said veterinary nurse Soula Hatzis. "We're not sure whether it had been through a garbage bin or picked up the chops from a camp site," Ms Hatzis said. "We see wildlife all the time and have a special room dedicated to them. We have penguins, pelicans, snakes, kookaburras, lorikeets, owls, ringtail and brush-tailed possums, bandicoots and water dragons. "If we think it can be saved, we save it." Pittwater Animal Hospital's vet Bryn Lynar has a special interest in birds and reptiles. so the service receives a good share of them. After receiving care and antibiotics the lizard is being looked after by reptile handler Gary Pattinson at WIRES for a week, before being released back at Lovett Bay.
