Dan1977
Just put my NO vote in. I reckon the sooner THAT party is banned from politics the better we'll all be. They are nothing more than extremists - remember this was the party that wanted to legalise ecstatsy and other outrageous policies. If they ran this country we'd all be living in caves.... Jiggy
Done, voted no, but I have a feeling that it's not going to make a difference. The NPA has probably all ready stitched up the deal with the state governement for the creation of the marine park AND the exclusion zones. The state goverment will be gambling that come next election the votes that they lose won't go to the Libs but to the greens and other independants; green preferences may well see them retain government. This is what happened at the last lot of council elections; Labour got slammed but most of the votes they lost didn't go to the Libs. So the ongoing trainwreck that is the NSW government may continue past 2011. The implementation process will probably follow the process they have used in all the other marine parks; feedback from stakes holders and the affected communities ignored unless they support the proposition. That said by no means should we lay down and take it. Write to your local member, the premier, the primary industries and environment ministers. Write to the opposition and get their stand on marine parks and exclusion zones. Write to the shooting party members and get them on side. It would also help to get one of the major daily papers onside. Whatever we do it's important that we act and act together, something that we fisherman are too often failing to do. If at the end of the day the exclusion zones are implemented then it's time for different tactics. Losing a battles doesn't mean that you've lost the war. cupster
From the Daily Telegraph, 05/12/08 "NSW Fishing Clubs Association president Robert Smith said a Federal Government risk assessment has found recreational fishing had negligible impact. I think the poll question is a loaded and misleading one..."should fishing be banned at long reef to protect the grey nurse shark" to me it implies that rec.fishing is the cause of the problem. This poll favours the YES vote. We all want to save a species so what uninformed person wouldn't vote yes? Greenies are a political, propaganda machine who rely on peoples ignorance and "feel good whims" and give no quarter to people with interests that conflict with theirs, they know how important these types of polls are so once they see that there vote is in the minority they'll do what they can to boost their vote. "BLUE IS THE NEW GREEN" they say...an ominous slogan for anyone who enjoys fishing.Does anyone really think they'll stop if/when these sanctuaries are established?..Of course not! they'll be encouraged by their success and will want to push it further...next thing will be a ban on livebaiting, lets face it..there are many in the green movement who'll like to see rec fishing banned altogether. As already said by others, it'll be hard to win this one if they start to rally but even if we don't win the %, a large "NO" vote won't go unnoticed!! A smart pollie [?] would know that a large percent of the people who voted NO are hard working, tax paying fishos who voted with a passion and if we ever get anywhere near as organised as the greenies we will be a voice that can't be ignored. Wouldn't hurt to slap the ol' "I FISH AND I VOTE" sticker on the car/boat raiders!! Edited December 12, 2008 by hooked4life

BIGFISH
As a group we have not gelled well in a political sense. 450,000 fishing licenses in NSW and yet groups like NPA divide and conquer us because we let them. There is a real sense of unity in NSW among the fishos and this needs to translate into organisation. Image what a national powerful lobby group we would be united with one voice. The marine parks that started in QLD and moved into northern NSW is definitely on the march south. We need to take a stand. I am not against marine parks per say but I am against being branded an environmental vandel because my family and I fish. The only memories I have of my late father where the times I fished with him as a kid. The answer to preserving the environmet is quota restriction, catch and release, artificial baits and tournaments that do not kill fish to match angling skills and all this has more or less come. The next step is to self police and dob in those that do the wrong thing that way the government, marine parks and the fisho are working for a common goal. Threatening to take out Sydney's premier and really only major reef is antagonistic and has created this seige mentality. This vote is far more about a referendum on our rights than whether or not an area can be fished. We thank all the raiders who are supporting the cause because I firmly believe you are supporting your and all australian rights. jewgaffer
The monkey trick with this one is that ordinary fair minded people in the street would not associate recreational fishermen with reducing the numbers of Grey Nurse sharks at Longreef or catching them anywhere else for that matter and rightly so, Grey Nurse sharks being a protected species, must be rare and of not much use to a recreational fisherman anyway. As a consequence these voters would more than likely vote yes, thinking saving Grey Nurse Sharks wouldn't do much harm to anyone and having a sanctuary at Longreef would only prevent commercial fishing boats from operating there. How much influence does this poll have. I've voted & obviously to do nothing on any poll that affects you is silly but really, if the vote was 99.5% NO who would really listen? Does the Manly Daily hold that much sway? Are there other avenues to express your opinion where they may get a better chance of being taken seriously to the people who make the decisions? If there is then not only should we vote on the Manly Daily poll but also get our opinions heard where it matters. Protesting & letters to pollies seems to be a more direct & targeted way to get your point across. Just a thought people, if anyone out there knows where or how to communicate our opinions then perhaps there are better ways than a newspaper poll.
