I see your point Al,

It must be difficult as a specialist rod builder to have O/S companies bring in rods at a poofteinth of our cost and make unsubstanciated performance claims based on nothing, when you are custom building for our conditions which are spot on.

I am in the auto industry and nothing urks me more than non genuine parts claiming to be something that there not and the avereage car owner knows no difference except cost.

Todays forum has certainly increased my knowledge of rods. I am definately taking a different view on rod purchase and selection in the future.

Thanks

None of the verifiable claims can be unsubstantiated but there are a whole lot of unverifiable claims flying around that get up my nose. Just cos identity X says they are the ducks guts doesnt mean they actually are. Thats just his opinion and thats what hes paid for... his opinion. What it says to me from where I sit is that his opinion isnt worth much if hes prepared to sell it out with Individualistic or totally unverifiable claims.

Professionally though its just bussiness not right or wrong and I simply have to compete against it. from the big boys outlook this sort of stuff does have its disadvantages too.

What if you invest a bucket load and your strategy doesnt come off. Irrespective of your turn over loosing $1M is still loosing $1M. Ouch

As I see it from a consumers POV on this sort of issue, the simple rules apply

DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE. ( apologies to public enemy)

Boys,

I believe I''ve seen the new blanks for the rods Allen has indicated he will be making up for the SP boys to have a look at - worth having a serious look and if the quality of workmanship is par to what I''ve seen from Shearwater then they will definitely be good gear to get a hold of.

G'day all,

As a new member I wanted to thank you all for the amount of information I've been able to pick up here!

The first point is you have to be comfortable with what your using after all were doing this for the enjoyment and if the tackle aint comfy it aint fun.

This quote from Allen Glover really says it for me as a bit of a novice fisho and I can really relate to it.

I currenly have a little hollow glass spin stick with solid tip that I use for chucking plastics and other lures around. I've caught everything from Whiting to thumpa Salmon in the bays with it and there's no doubt it's served me well. I have it matched to a little spinning reel with 6lb braid.

It is of course, however... a cheapie and I realised the difference the minute I picked up a graphite rod.

The rod I currently have is so much heavier than a graphite rod and casting all day with it becomes uncomfortable and well - that takes the edge of my fun, "it aint comfy so it aint fun" (well it is but it could be much better).

I also find it difficult to get the lure right next to "that snag or pilon" but that could have more to do with my casting than the rod.

I've been considering outlaying some $$ for a graphite rod and this post has really gone a long way to making up my mind.

Thanks again to everyone for a very informative and enlightening post and one that's probably going to result in a happier fisho. :ohyeh: :ohyeh:

Cheers

David.

Gday David,

Good post mate, im proof of your point, check out my early questions in this thread youll see In knew Jack s**t about rods so I asked some probing questions

A few guys responded and also Alan and totaly changed my view on rods and gave me a much better understanding on the whole topic.

It certainly makes fishing more enjoyable when you have a better understanding of the basics of the gear.

There are some gun fishos on this site with heaps of knowledge dont hold back in asking basic questions to get good info.

Cheers :grogon:

G'day Grantm,

Yeah, I'm going to give it some serious consideration and look for a graphite stick I can flick plastics with but also have a go at the Sambos with as well.

I'm limited with the $$$ (baby on the way) but will get the best my budget allows for. I'm thinking one of the squidgy spin sticks would be more than ample given what I want to do and my level of experience.

I just love the whole "sambos on bream gear stuff" and since getting onto a school at Lilli Pilli and soon after at Kurnell last summer I've never looked back. At Kurnell I was using the little glass rod (which is a Silstar) with a little Silstar reel and 6lb braid and flouro leader and landed fish after fish (tailor included) by myself out of my little runabout (which I had at the time).

Just one of those trips that stays with you, perfect conditions, football field sized boil that lasted an hour....

OK, that's enough prattling on.... :D

Cheers,
