Rockfishing PFD

Recommended Posts

Raiders,

Apologies if this isn’t the right place but I thought it was related and relevant.

Of late, I’ve been venturing onto more rock ledges and headlands and wanted some advice on an appropriate PFD.

I always go with a friend, wear spiked rock boots, spend a while just watching and assessing conditions, never turn my back to the sea but would like to start wearing a PFD as well.

Ideally I’m after something very lightweight, and un-obtrusive as I enjoy casting metals and plastics and obviously movement of my arms, shoulders and back is important. As well as keeping cool.

Maybe something that I can inflate if need be? Other suggestions? Is there a “standard” PFD that lots of rock fishos use? Suggestions on where to buy?

Thanks

Carl

G'day carl

glad to hear youve got saftey 1st ;)

Personally i dont wear a life jacket, but ive been meaning to get one also. Ive done a bit of research and found these:

Inflateable PFDs: http://www.mustangsurvival.com/recreational/inflatable-pfds

https://www.whitworths.com.au/main_itemdetail.asp?cat=144&item=18368&intAbsolutePage=1

i like these but they're a bit pricey

a inflatable PFD1 belt jacket:

Its gotta be comfortable and unobtrusive or your just not going to wear it, so id go for the belt jacket. theres a heap to choose from! Also if you do go in, jackets can inhibit swimming away from the danger zone so keep that in mind when choosing!

just remember: a life jacket won't necessarily save your life but it will certainly help. the main issue is stoping people going in the drink in the first place

I bought a Stearns belt pfd. Very small (until inflated) and doesn't get in the way at all. I put it on when conditions warrant it, but always have it in my pack. It is like a bum bag except worn in front. Does that make it a front bag? Got mine from Outdoors adventures at $102 for two jackets.

Thanks mate, definately trying to avoid a swim in the first place but some insurance can't harm me. Thanks for the links, will have a good browse through today.

Sounds pretty well suited and your idea about always having it ready if conditions deem it appropriate makes sense. Will check it out.

Thanks

Definitely get an inflatable: you will wear it.

A good friend of my dad's drowned, his (regular) pfd was later found in his kayak. There was not a more experienced kayaker on the planet, but he made the mistake of having a pfd that interfered too much with his activity for constant use.

I bought a "Marlin" at Whitworths for about $70, and wear it all the time when fishing (boat and land based). It is very comfortable, and more than once I've driven home and come in the house before realising it was still on. You're supposed to get them checked annually by a professional (e.g. at Whitworths), which I guess is not a bad idea for fishermen whose hooks might have punctured the lining from time to time.
