Super Trawler Legislation

Recommended Posts

I usually steer clear of politics on this site but as this has been debated here before I don't mind passing this on.

It is an extract of an email sent out to ALP members fro Julie Collins the member for Franklin in Tas. If you are concerned about it contact the Federal Senators from your State and let them know

Less than two years ago, Labor put a stop to the Supertrawler with a ban which turned it around before it had even starting trawling Australias oceans.

In Tasmania, where the Supertrawler planned to do its worst, we were particularly relieved by the ban and I fought hard to see it delivered both for our local fishing industry and for the unique marine creatures in our oceans.

Because of what's called a "sunset clause" in the legislation, it means we cannot stop future supertrawlers doing damage to the sustainability of our fisheries and our precious marine life.

Thats why Labor is moving legislation to remove this sunset clause so new supertrawlers can be banned. Its being debated this week, but we dont yet know how the Coalition will vote.

Can you call one of your States Liberal Senators and tell them you want the Liberals in the Senate to vote to protect our oceans and ensure our fisheries are sustainable?

The public was clear it wanted the Supertrawler banned in 2012 and we need to see that kind of support again to make sure we can keep other supertrawlers out of our waters.

Here are a few points on whats being debated:

The legislation is being debated this week and is expected to be voted on this week

We need the Liberals to support the ban to make sure new Supertrawlers cant come to Australian waters

Local fishing operators and our precious marine life will suffer if new supertrawlers arrive before the scientific evidence is gathered

Politicians do notice when their phones run hot on an issue and making a call can make a difference, so make sure the Liberal Government knows how you feel.

We can stop more supertrawlers coming and we have a chance to do that today lets not miss it!
