Fish ID Required, it has wings(Red Gurnard)

Question

Hey all,

Been a while since I posted here but here I go. Caught this off the boat. It was released unharmed after a couple pictures. At first it looked like a flathead but as soon as it came abroad, it wasn't the case and as soon as it came out of the net, its wings came out. Jaws dropped.

Anybody have any ideas? The only remote thing I've found is some sort of prehistoric flying fish but unable to confirm let alone why something like this is in our back yards!

Enjoy this awesome looking fish. I've never seen anything like it before, not even in an aquarium.

My boys and I caught one of these of Chinamen's Beach, near the Spit, it was about a two years ago

It started croaking when we had it in the boat

We were freaked out by the croaking and chucked it back in fairly quickly

I thought it was a Flying Gurnard

And apparently great eating

But how freaky are they when the croak

It feels as though the fish is talking to you, agree it is freaky.

Big flatties gts and Jewies grunt as well .

No water in the throat or gills and they find a voice.

Quick spike and bleed

Unless they say something interesting .

What are we talking about here? Sounds as though that could apply to humans as well.
