Heat proofing

The Incredible Hull

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

This is not boat related, but still hoping for some good ideas...

I have a small box about card size and 1 inch thick, in my cars engine bay. I need to heat proof this box, any ideas?

My mate suggested to use oven mitts... It will work but it will look not so good!

Any ideas much appreciated, thanks.

You can buy a product called gold leaf which is a reflective matting made by DEI that is for that exact purpose.

Otherwise I'd remake the box out of heatsheild material, it's a waffle-weave alloy designed to protect objects from heat.

What's the box made of and why does it need to resist heat?

Ok so I've done more research... looks like I was heading down the wrong path!

So, the boxes I have in the engine bay, they are called Ballasts. They provide high voltage to HID head lights. After fitting them a few months ago, 1 side of the headlights turns off after 15 minutes or so, leading me to believe it may be a over heating problem, as the engine bay gets quite hot.

So after some research just now, heat resistant stuff won't work, because the Ballast box itself heats up extremely hot! So yer... I think the only option I have is to try and mount it as low as I can in the engine bay.
