Finger licking good luring

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

Winter is on it's way :frozen: , so away go the surface lures and out come the blades and vibes.

I fished mainly lower Parramatta river in the month of April-May, looking for the deeper waters where fish might hold. I was using deep diving/suspending hardbodies were possible or plastics and blades to access the deeper sections.

Me being a relatively newbie to blades and vibes, I had to learn how to use them first. Having watched John (Blood Knot) pole in plenty of fish on the blades in the summer, bream, whiting and flathead in numbers I had picked up a few tips that would help me.

I was using 3.5g and 5g blades of various brands (and cheap unbranded) with a lift and drop. Fish liked to hit it on the drop (feels like a sharpish hit akin to a hardbody strike) or picked off the bottom. I just watched my line for the pickup and eased into the fish. A small strike would also be sufficient but I found that a big strike would often result in a pulled treble.

Without making the report too long winded, I'll let the pictures do the talking.

Nice whiting. One on the Damiki Vault and the other on a plastic.

Couple of flatties on various blades followed by one on a plastic and then a HB.

40cm luderick on Atomic shad suspending. Geez it went hard! Little EP on a Zman grub. Pinkie on the Atomic Metalz blade.

Selected breambos on the trusty Damiki, Atomic crank deep, Zmans, cas clear flick bait and Bait breath.

The rains haven't deterred the fish, so hopefully the fishing remains good throughout the season. Thanks for reading and I hope those of you thinking about giving blades or lures a go can obtain something meaningful from this report. For me, being new to blades (esp. bream), it was just a matter of getting out there, giving it a go and fine tuning what I had read and observed. A long way to go, but it's a start.

Lovely selection of fish there man, well done! That what size did the whiting go at? Looks like a monster!

I'd like to get into blades. I've given them a shot in the past for no real reward. I was always worried about losing them in a snag- they ain't cheap! Might be worth investigating again as winter sets in.

What do you make of the bait breath btw, I bought a pack yesterday? Are they as durable as the Zmanz?

Nice haul of fish there Pete  , yep those blades with the assist hooks are dynamite on the bream, whiting and flatties, and you can cover plenty of ground quickly to find where the fish are.

Cheers Blood Knot

Thanks John! Lots of potential in those blades as you know, I guess I learnt from the best. :icon_peace:

Thanks adamski.I throw them in areas where snagging potential is low or I throw cheaper ones out if I am desperate.

The bait breath so far have performed well against the Zman grubz in terms of catching rate. I think they are a good lure if the pickers aren't around otherwise the Zman grub would be my choice. They are nowhere near as durable as Zmans whereby a single plastic could potentially last a whole day. You would probably go through a pack of bait breath in that time or less. However, in times when zmans are scarce, I would use other lure types.

Sensational stuff as always Dr Pete!

Really nice quality fish on a selection of lures, great work mate

That sure is top luring and thanks for sharing.

Very well done

All the best

Ian

Thanks as always Ian. I hope you haven't been too busy and can still get out for the odd fish. :biggrinthumb:

Awsome read . im ned to blades aswell would like to see pics of your blades

Thanks bretto101. Here are some blades that I've been using. Apologies that they not the exact ones that I used in this report. Those ones have since found new homes on rocks and snags on the bottom of the Parramatta river. :074: I try to swap out the rear treble (and remove the front treble altogether) for a stinger hook in most cases because it still catches fish and is less prone to snagging. It is more economical to fish this way.

Did you catch these fish in one session or over a number of sessions and locations ?

This was over several sessions during the month of April in several locations in the Parramatta system.

great stuff!! is that stinger somthing you made up your self ? or can you buy them

Thanks. The stingers I'm using are bought. They are called ZX stinger hooks. You can also make them if you like doing a bit of DIY. It gives you the choice to pick the hook sizes and colours of the feelers. A member has posted about making them before in this thread: http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.php?showtopic=74319&hl=

Hope that helps.
