Has anyone used Plaig reel bearings?

Hi There,

I recently stripped my Pflueger TR30 spinning reel which was dunked in saltwater momentarily and left in this state for quite a while. A couple of the bearings had signs of rust and corrosion. One of them was actually stuck fast. They were quite easily cleaned and freed up with a WD40 and cleaning alcohol bath overnight.

After relubing, the suspect bearings spin well but are a bit rough and noisy. So after putting everything back together, the reel is now lacking the initial silent and smooth cranking. This is probably due to pitting of the ball bearings from the corrosion.

I am looking at replacing the bearings and came across Plaig Bearings (http://plaig.com.au/shop/index.php/fishing-reel-bearings-c-62) based in Melbourne. They seem to specialise in bearings for R/C hobbyists and have recently moved into the fishing reel arena. I'm just wondering whether anyone has used their bearings on their reels as I have done some googling and haven't come across much fishing reel related info.

I've never purchased reel bearings so I wouldn't know how much the genuine parts would cost, but these appear quite reasonable at about $5-$6 each.

I would welcome any experiences you may have had with this company or their products.

Many Thanks

Assuming these guys on-sell a range of bearings from various suppliers (ie: they are not manufacturers of bearings), would think the onus would be on you to specify the type of bearing you want, be it stainless, sealed, shielded. ceramic, ABEC number etc etc etc

They are into RC so should have experience around quality high RPM bearings, for fisho's its probably more critical around corrosion / longevity issues. However I wouldn't think you would get into too much trouble giving them a crack as long as you know what you are after.

Would like to hear your feedback on em

Cheers

Hi Blood Knot,

Thanks for your advice and apologies for the delay in updating this thread. I subsequently went ahead and ordered the Plaig bearings suitable for my reel and have been more than happy with them. They had a range specifically for fishing reels, so there was no problems in ordering the correct types. The Pflueger is now as smooth as silk just like it was when unboxed. Mind you, my outfit is only for light bream and flathead fishing - so it is not exactly put under the grind unlike others on this forum. Anyhow, they are doing the job for me just in case you were interested in another option for some reasonably priced bearings with quick delivery locally.

Cheers,

After buying a Plaig bearing I replaced the line roller bearing in my old faithful 2500 Symetre the other day and respooled it. Seems good in the shed.

To find the right one I looked at the schematics and typed the number into an international auction website and it popped up. Checked the measurements in the description, purchased and two days and $6 later it was in the letter box. Easy as.

I was told it would cost around $60 for shimano to do it.
