what is the real name for white bait (Sandy Sprat)

perch

Question

I got a white bait and put in my fish tank as I didn't use all of them and I was wondering what the real name is because I look up white bait and it comes up as the frozen bait ones and cooked ones but none of these.post-36424-0-04796100-1442307387_thumb.jpg

From Wikipedia :

In Australia whitebait refers to the juvenile stage of several predominantly galaxias species during their return to freshwater from the marine phase of their lifecycle. Comments for New Zealand are generally applicable.

Species referred to as whitebait in Australia include Common galaxias G. maculatus, Climbing galaxias G. brevipinnis, Spotted galaxias G. truttaceus, Tasmanian whitebait Lovettia sealii, Tasmanian mudfish Neochanna cleaveri, and Tasmanian smelt Retropinna tasmanica.

Whitebait were once subject to a substantial commercial fishery but today only recreational fishers are permitted to gather them, under strict conditions and for a limited season.

Perch

I think this is a much more accurate Identification.

From the Department of Primary Industries.

http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0008/375965/Whitebait.pdf

Wiki missed by a country mile.

Galaxias species is more like 4" skinny trout.

Your little fella is not a Whitebait - Sandy Sprat

Your one has an additional rear dorsal fin (correctly called a Adipose Fin)

Still is a pretty little fella

Good luck in You ID

Perch, is that fish in the front in the photo the one you are calling whitebait?

i vaguely recognise it and it looks like a freshwater fish. Is that a marine tank or freshwater?

also, where did you get it?

cheers

V.
