Offshore report

Hi everyone,

We fished today out of Wollongong up to southern canyons.

Started with 18 water on the coast and put the lines in at about 70 fathoms, worked through a couple of breaks until we settled into one from 20 to 20.5 with a good line full of blue bottles and a few birds hanging around in 150. The break had bait patches but we didn't hit too many hard marks.

We left that break and headed wider and worked a line in about 200 that went from 20.5 to 20.9. It had bait but it wasn't stacked and it didn't have the right vibe.

So back to 150 and about 1300 right in the middle of cooking up lunch we get bit, right in the middle of the spread of too many lures for 3 on board.

Anyways we soon after released a skinny stripe of about 50-60 keg.

And other than that didn't turn a reel.

Sorry no pics we were a bit underdone for crew.

Thanks Steve,

I was on the water yesterday up north on the Central Coast.

We had the same issue as you really - no bait and cold water. We found the further over the shelf e went the colder the water got. We heard on #21 that a 100-150kg Marlin was hooked in 22c water when we were sat in 20.5 - WHERE THE HELL WAS 22c???

Turns out the water at 22c was in 750 fathoms between The Bait Station and Browns. Over the radio we heard one dollie found in 220 fathoms and no bait around anywhere and no one could find warm water. We did roughly 100 nm's of trolling for 0-0-0. The signs of life over the shelf were sparse... no only no bait but no birds, whales, etc, we found a small pod of Fat HUGE dolphins, big big big dolphins, we couldnt believe how huge they were... obviously a lot of bait has been eaten recently.

All in all a bad day for us but seems like you did well to read the bait and find yourself a beakie.

Well done, it was a hard day! Need some more warm water to push down!

There was stacks of bait in 75-80fthm on Thursday. Found the everywhere I went in that line. From east off the 12 down to east of hacking fad. Found a free swimmer, interestingly only small around that 50kg mark. He was just finning along the surface in glassy conditions on the edge of a large bait area. Not a bait ball, large area. It showed no interest in the lures or the boat, just quietly slinked away the second time I past it.

Well done on getting one interested and hooked up. Pretty promising start to the season. How good is the south coast going to fish this summer!

!

Thanks guys

Don't get too hung up on other people's temperatures, he might have had 22 if he was sitting next to you! Keep reading the signs and act on them, the best marlin water is often inside rather than as far as you can go.

Also heard a report of another stripe caught in 100 fathoms but I think it was south of us

Looking at the SST the warm water was certainly further down south. The temps matched what the reports were... Todays water off Gosford is 19-20 where as Browns has a beautiful 23c break on it. It just looks like we got out on the wrong day for up north. Will hope for a break in the wind and swell next week and head out again.
