The easiest way to change bearings

The easiest and fastest way to change them is by taking your bearing buddy off and removing the split pin, castellated nut and washer and removing the hub assembly still attached to the wheel-post-20199-0-92103500-1451290339_thumb.jpg

Then simply locate the wheel/hub over a bin and remove the bearings and races directly into the bin as before-post-20199-0-60656000-1451290496_thumb.jpgpost-20199-0-73319300-1451290573_thumb.jpg

I also use the bin like a bench to install the new bearings prior to putting the wheel/hub assembly back on the trailer-post-20199-0-09570200-1451290812_thumb.jpgpost-20199-0-13574300-1451290862_thumb.jpgpost-20199-0-53803100-1451290897_thumb.jpg

I give the old bearings a good wash with kerosene and keep the ones that are still serviceable for spares in my cars and boat to help someone that might need them.I blow them dry followed by a spray with wd40 or similar and wrap each bearing and race set in newspaper then store in my boat/cars spares box until needed. You'll be surprised how many I've used to help someone out over the years-post-20199-0-58707900-1451291409_thumb.jpgpost-20199-0-29565100-1451291430_thumb.jpgpost-20199-0-69251600-1451291454_thumb.jpg

Nice write up. I could have done with this yesterday morning. I ended up youtubing because I could not get the inner bearing out.

Anyway, I learnt a few things. All the bearings seem to fit all the hubs. Its the Axle that is the different bit which makes the

internal dimension of the wheel bearings different. I have three different types of hubs, Ford, Holden and one that I couldn't identify/

Anyway, all converted to ford pattern hubs now with a mix of ford and holden bearings, depending on the trailer.

Good tip about keeping the spare bearings for ramp side donation. I've got a spare ford hub now. How would you

suggest I attach it to my trailer so that I can also put my spare tyre on it? That way I've got a spare set of bearings,

wheel and wheel nuts all in one!

Hi mate,You can chop off a spindle off a old axle if you have one lying around and weld it to the winch post or A frame of the trailer and mount the tyre/hub assembly on it.You can buy a stub axle from the cheap auto store for around $20 and weld it on as above.I was going to mount a complete hub/wheel assembly to mine but decided against it as it will be always exposed to containimants from the weather and road that will slowly seep into the hub itself.I wanted my spare to both act as a spare and a step to board over the bow so I made up (You can buy spare tyre carriers)a mounting bracket out of flat plate and a galvanised pipe u bolted to the trailer and welded the nuts to help prevent theft.I carry a complete set of bearings and a full hub assembly on board my boat.

Cheers.post-20199-0-67264400-1451348935_thumb.jpgpost-20199-0-05876400-1451348975_thumb.jpgpost-20199-0-67695400-1451349001_thumb.jpg

You will need something like this to mount your hub assembly on.post-20199-0-45055000-1451349061_thumb.jpg

Hope this helps.

I think if you go to a good trailer shop, you can actually buy the stub axle already mounted on a plate ready to clamp onto the trailer as per Fab's photo's. If you don't have a welder etc, it's a lot easier, and they are not expensive.

We can possibly get them, were closed until the 4th, I can check then
