?!?!?!?!? Mate caught this on dough (Crested Oyster Goby)

Went out with a few mates today to target mullet around swallow rock. We were using my special dough recipe when my friend pulled this out from 3m of water. I have no idea what it is. It felt soft, sticky and slimy. Pretty weird but pretty cool fish, was about 8cm long.

Looks like a goby. Have you any other photos? Hopefully with the dorsal fin up.

Nope sorry :'( those two were the only ones that came out clear on camera. I just googled the goby and I think thats it. Never seen one in the hacking before though, weird but cool at the same time

There are lots of different gobies. The challenge is working out which one ( if indeed it is a goby) . Was it as black as the photo shows or perhaps more a brown colour?

it was pure black, which surprised me, never seen a fish as dark. I just read that they were an invading species Maybe i shoulda kept it in the livie bucket to take home haha

ive caught gobies like that at the entrance before but they are a bit brighter than that one but having a look at that one on its belly it has similar red stripes like that so I think I could be a crested oyster goby.

I was looking in that direction too Pearch. But I'm not seeing the bands in the photo. Hence asking for the dorsal fin pic.

There are colour variations with that species. So yes it could be habitat.

It was pure black everything, even the fins if that helps Pretty unique looking fish, definitely felt very unique. If it helps, we caught it from under a rock LOL

No. Just another one of the "not caught very often" species of fish that swim about.

If you were to go scuba diving, you would see plenty of unusual fish.

Awesome, thank god they aren't pests. I was reading that they were a pest species in the U.S so I was hoping it wasn't a case of those walking, climbing fish thats making its way into our systems haha

At first glance maybe a juvy mudskipper but leaning towards a gobie. I tend to get a few of them as by catch in tuggerah lakes but tend to be at night.
