Hi raiders,

The local rag published an article discussing reports and the sit plans for commercial fishing in NSW.

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/newslocal/central-coast/rise-of-imported-seafood-as-commercial-fishermen-squeezed-out/news-story/b117fea06dff2882521bf7117817f375

What are the 'structural reforms'?

What's this about a $16mil exit plan?

What's this independent report the govt is weighing up on the future of commercial fishing?

What's this 'structural adjustment committee and their 25 recommendations?

My own 2 cents on the changes, I agree with Steve Starling

'I'd remove all commercial netting, trawling, and hauling inside our rivers, estuaries, harbours, and beaches to the 3km mark.'

I'd keep the commercial guys going just get rid of the bloody foreign supertrawlers!...Personally I'm not a seafood eater but obviously our food industry is heavily based around it and I feel for the guys getting pushed out of jobs. I know from speaking to a local oyster farmer from the hawksbury and brisbane waters that the surface water quality is often so bad that they can't harvest any of the oysters for up to 6 months of the year (intermittently). Interesting post though Luke you got my attention.

I'm with you. Could potentially push up the fishing license to $50, to buy out the commercial fishing license.

Be careful what you wish for. Once the commercial guys have been removed the next step is to turn the Hawkesbury and Sydney Harbour into Marine Reserves. ( fishing full stop ). NSW Greens and Labor Policy

Part of your Fishing Licence Fee already goes towards the buy back of the commercial licences as compensation. Who will compensate you when they take your right to fish in the Hawkesbury River and Sydney Harbour.

I do feel also for the commercial guys. They have families and it must be hard losing your livelihood. They'll have to work jobs they hate like the rest of us.

Or just remove the fishing fee exemption for aboriginals and pensioners.

Thanks for sharing the links. I don't understand why any area should be banned from recreational fishing. It's sustainable, great for the economy and great for people's health. If you want to preserve the blue groper, ban it from being caught.
